Who would have guessed that there are more diners in MARYLAND than in NEW JERSEY??? How can that be possible??
One of the charms of going to the Jersey shore is diner coffee on the way.
Anyone coming through Baltimore anytime soon? I love giving tours.

I have threatened to cook my dog for dinner when he acts unruly. But his mug is just too darn sweet and has been such a good boy lately that I rescinded that threat. As much as I'm not a dog fan, I do love ours.

I LOVE seafood and have found the Carolina's to have little dives along piers that have such fresh seafood at a fraction of the cost. Can anyone recommend a good vacation spot (that's kid-friendly) with similar seafood joints? Yeah, we take food into consideration when traveling.

Does anyone have any good (cheap!) marketing ideas?

I have a cleaning service, and also cook, run errands...like Alice on the Brady Bunch, minus the sleeping over part. It's definitely time to find more customers, but marketing isn't really my strong suit.

People here are so creative that somebody must have some ideas. And don't forget--cheap!

The cheapest would be to post flyers in local coffee shops and stores that have bulletin boards. Some businesses also allow others to leave business cards.
Word-of-mouth is also cheap. Offering a referral program helps.

I'm afraid I'm pretty computer illiterate, so I don't have a website. Are they expensive?

@theshytype--you know, word of mouth has been my very best source of new clients. It's a little tough to explain everything I do on flyers, but I wonder if some businesses wouldn't hire me just to run errands on call? I checked with the florist for Valentine's Day--I think I'll go to a few more of them before Easter and Mother's Day.

Don't forget Craigslist. Great source for clients when I was self-employed. You don't need a website for that.

Yes to Craigslist, great suggestion.

You will need 3 things to do an effective website.

One, space on someone's web server. This can be very inexpensive
since you will not be generating large amounts of traffic. That is to say
you will not use large amounts of bandwidth.

Two, a good searchable name for the site and your business. Once again
cheap in terms of money, but crucial in terms of traffic generation.

Three, in your case someone to do it for you. I would recommend you
contact the local, high schools, community colleges, computer clubs, and
or use craigslist again to find someone to do it for you. It should not
cost that much in terms of the return you can expect from it.

In this hunt for your web person don't underestimate a savvy senior type
with computer skills since they are closer to your client demographic than
younger people are.

And Outlier, thanks for the suggestions. I wonder if one of my clients isn't savvy enough to do it, and I'll bet they'd trade for a day's cleaning. Cool!

There's also websites out there that have premade templates you can use for free once you have your hosting and web address established - if you can't find anyone else to do it. If you want more, or add on extras such as a cart, it'll cost extra. Try googling free web design.

My mom owns her own business.

She bought one of those magnet things for the side of her car through vista print and also some business cards. From what I understand they aren't all that expensive. She did her own website and paid something like 50 dollars for the year for the domain and webspace. Once you do that, from what I understand you can pay a site to make sure your ad comes up first on google.( I don't really know the logistics) Any time she sees a message board at a store she always asks to place a business card. She carries push pins and cards with her where ever she goes. She gives client referral bonuses. It's something like 5 dollars off a service for a repeat client. She signs up for and has a table at the women's expo and any other opportunities similar to that. Also, she has placed fliers door to door before. Anything she has to do to get more clients.

More expensive things she is able to do is placing a yellow page ad and sending out mailers through the post office to a specific neighborhood.

Best form of advertising in history!

Years ago, in a list of tips for building a freelance writing business, I came across an idea that might work. (I have not tried it.) Find a cause that mans something to you and/or to the clients you hope to attract and offer to donate X hours of service as a prize for a raffle or auction fund-raiser. That should not only get your name out there, but hopefully the winner (thrilled with your work) will recommend you to others.

If there are apartment buildings or complexes in your area, it might be worthwhile to reach out to the management offices. I found my cleaning person through my building manager.
