I think I understand what DS is saying. There's an old law school example of the guy whose wife needs medication but he's been out of work for a while and can't afford it. He breaks a window to a pharmacy and steals the medicine.

He's guilty of breaking and entering, damaging property and theft but a life has been saved.

I get it but, I think we do a bit too much of that in this world. Yes, there can be extenuating circumstances but by-and-large, people don't break the law for some "higher purpose". The real motivators are still greed, power, and sex.

I see this particular case as an example of all three with a bit of good ol' laziness thrown in. if he needed money, why didn't he just write a book? Take on speaking engagements? A person at his level of notoriety need not work for a living, per se. It's not that difficult to make a few sheckles.

My work requires that I have a business account and a personal account. If I were to co-mingle funds, I'd be jailed and lose my license. It doesn't matter why I do it; just that I did it. I don't see this as being any different. I might, if he had used the money to get one of his children a kidney transplant or something but, even at that, I'd want him removed from office (I believe he already resigned) and I'd want him stripped of his ability to have anything to do with funds for his church and a little bit of jail time (3-6 months) wouldn't be totally out of order.

As the one who originally brought this up (and the one who seems to be bothered by it), I should reply.
I suppose what bothers me is that he traded his honor and integrity for something I consider to have little no no value. His values are so different from anything I could relate to. It's odd that everyone else in this thread is focusing on how he sold off his honor, and I'm focusing on what he sold it for.

Would it have bothered you any less if he had sold his honor for things of great value? Is it okay to do what he did as long as it's for a good reason?

Not okay. Not at all okay, But at least understandable to me.
It's like someone traded his brand new 2013 Porsche for a 1995 Yugo with a few pieces missing.

A 1995 Yugo had a few pieces missing when it rolled off the assembly line, I think.

This isn't a black or white issue....it's a guy....a politician....who stole money.
