I need more ammo in case of zombies. I take a crossbow too with plenty of bolts.

I cant believe that no one has even mentioned family... what is everyone a bunch of hermits with no living relatives or they were created in test tubes and grown from and embryo to infant in a large container of synthetic embryonic fluid?

Because the question was "What are some of the things you guys use, think you can't live without or have found that you can in fact do without in your daily lives despite their popularity?"

I didn't read that as meaning family, or people in general, at all.

Is the actual title of the thread. What we use is not mentioned.

Considering that I have been in places where I could not call family, I kinda discovered your family is both a necessary and luxury.

This is why I have a machete and a good sharpening stone, plus a couple of sets of throwing knives that I know how to use well.

Does coffee count as something you cant live without?

I mean I have a 32oz coffee mug... if it is not filled and drank at least 4 times a day, my body seems to have some sort of reaction that is not pleasant.

I used to think like that until Master made me stop drinking coffee. I can go without it now but I still get cravings for it and he allows me to have it sometimes.

I'm hoping when I start this new job and having to wake up early again, he will allow me to have it again. Otherwise the people at work are not going to be happy people around me!

Books will always be around here in Baltimore. There's a place called The Book Thing. It is open every weekend and you can go there and get free books...as many as you want. There are rows upon rows upon rows upon rows of books. Master and I go there all the time and He has so many books that if he gets anymore it's going to fill up his entire home. [8D]

As for family, other than my daughter, yes I can go without. I'm not particularly close to mine. My daughter and Master are really the only family I consider important to me.

One of the reasons I don't like having a lot of stuff around and being dependent on it is that I like to use my money for things like eating out, going places, doing things outside the home. I like going outside. I like spending time elsewhere. I like exploring and learning new things, seeing new things, etc...so I just don't see a need to have a lot of stuff in my home. I'm a very basic person.

Master says I'm the only one he knows that never has any food in her refrigerator but yet still can make a meal. It's because I like going out everyday and getting fresh vegetable and fruits and stuff to make dinner with. It gives me a chance to get outside and I just like the freshness instead of it sitting in my refrigerator or freezer for who knows how long before I will use it. When it comes to food I'm kinda spur of the moment. I've tried cooking ahead of time but it just never seems to work for me and it always ends up going to waste because something in life will interfere or we'll decide to go somewhere at the last minute or Master ends up not being able to come over to eat and then I end up not eating it and I end up just throwing it away. So I'd rather just wait until that day when I know what we're doing.

I divorced the last woman that suggested I stop drinking coffee.... of course that was after she threw away my coffee maker.

Having kept my library accounts from the last two places I live, I now belong to three library systems, and between library ebooks and paper books, almost never buy books.

When I stayed at a yoga retreat center that was under construction in Costa Rica, I learned that I could live without electricity (which meant no AC or even fans in the tropics) but could not live without a comfortable mattress. I was supposed to stay three months but had to cut it a month short as I was miserable due to the chronic sleep deprivation.

I scrounged books from other visitors, the farm next door, and the hotel down the mountain. Every few weeks I made the three hour bus trip into a big town with an internet cafe.

I haven't bought a book in like three years, and I swear, the damn things are taking over my house. My living room is organically evolving into a library

I hope they're all systems in an area where you actually pay taxes or that wouldn't be quite fair. Sorry, I'm in library management and it's just a pet peeve[;)]

I can't live without:

Walking in to my house and having my cats follow me wherever I go.

(I like that).

Finding what I want in my pantry....when I damn well want it.

(At any time, day or night).

TV on...when I come in. I can click it off if I choose to, but frankly, I don't know how to (I'm learning)...it's still on...I don't know how to turn it off...it's been on since the guys who installed it....turned it on.

In time.....and I'm good with that.

Broccoli cheddar soup...
I can't love without that.

Come to think about it, I've lived without a car with a back seat for almost 20 years.

It's not when the cats are knocking them down or you can no longer find anywhere to walk which is what is going to happen soon if we don't get some shelving put up soon.

sunshinemiss -> RE: Luxuries we think we can't live without but find we can with practice (2/26/2013 2:02:06 AM)

I enjoy my life, but living abroad, I've had to learn to do without a whole lot of things!

Food - asparagus, brussell sprouts (my faves), Jif peanut butter, limes, rye bread, fresh fruits, Grapenuts, ready made frozen lunches - e.g. Lean Cuisine, beets, pumpkin, turkey (some of these are available just too expensive to have)
Appliances - curling iron or hot rollers, (I just bought a hair dryer after 4 years without one), microwave, toaster, garbage disposal, oven
Furniture - dresser, bed, couch, desk, rugs
Entertainment - television, radio, stereo, live music in English
Places - Barnes and Nobles, Ross Dress for Less, Saladworks, Yoga Studio, (yes there is yoga here, but the people punch their muscles as part of it... doesn't relax me)
Miscellaneous - Car, garden of my own, dance workshops, my spiritual community, weekly get-togethers with my long time friends

The wonderful thing has been the level of creativity and clarity that have come into my life as a result. I have learned to cook with some green veggies here. No idea what they are, but they're good. I make my own yogurt, I use dried fruit, and it'll have to do. A rice cooker and a crock pot can cook darned near everything I need. My kitchen table now doubles as my desk, my craft space. The internet lets me see shows - although they are often reruns. I don't have any idea what is popular on tv or at the movies. I'm good with that. I've become much more artistic because my life isn't filled with other people's projects.

I follow the 100 Thing Challenge guy and think that's a superb idea... not one I will do - heck I love my clothes too much! - but it's interesting.

best,
sunshine

You should absolutely hit this place. Word of warning-get there early if you go on Saturday-say 9 am. There's all sorts of scumbags who rush in as soon as the place opens and grab any and everything that can be sold on Amazon-lots of the best sellers and such. The staff fills slowly replenishes the stock over the weekend. The other best, and quietest, time is Sunday afternoon.
For me, just swinging by is no biggee, I live close by. But if you're planning a trip into the city I thought I'd give you a hint or two to help ya out.
Now, how this works for kids books, having none, I have no clue.
