“The worst-case scenario for us,” a leading anti-budget-cuts lobbyist told The Post, “is the sequester hits and nothing bad really happens.”

Hail Armageddon By Charles Krauthammer, Washington Post: February 28

Krauthammer nails this one!

well,... imo the US govt has overspent and should tighten its belt.. that doesnt mean that nothing happens.. some people may lose their jobs or get hours cut.. etc, etc.. but this belt tightening is just a drop in the bucket and wont do a heck of a lot.. at some point the shite will really hit the fan.. but until then, party on..

I get the feeling that if we ended the salaries of those who cannot make fiscal decisions, we would have a whole number of matters cleared up. Lets started with Congressional payrolls and benefits being slashed.

Politesub53 -> RE: Sooo " the sequester hits and nothing bad really happens.” (3/1/2013 4:25:06 PM)

Of course nothing happened, its the first bloody day. I am amazed people cant understand what these cuts actually are, or how they will come into effect.

Your point?

Ron Paul said it unbelievably effectively when asked "what would you do to resolve the budget deficit issue?"

He responded....

"That's easy....we lock the budget. Same as it was last year. Same as it will be until....we get the spending equal to the budget (income/tax revenues), plus 5% until we pay off what we owe".

Pretty simple math peeps.

Nice and simple...minimal (but in fact) pain....and...you get EXACTLY what you have today....until it equals what we take in.

Grow the economy, spend ridiculous amounts until it equals what we take in...no (nominal) pain but (real) pain....until we earn what we're spending...and then....

That 5% additional gets added to the budget until we pay off the debt.

Fairly simple actually....stay the course....use the computers you already have....software too...you get what you had previously....do some creative math, be more productive (like all of us have to be)...and...when your expenses are less than what we bring in...

VICTORY!!!!

Spending has to be cut and revenue has to go up. The problem is doing it when the economy is still so fragile.

We're talking about eliminating at least 1.5 million jobs, most of which are good paying indsutrial jobs. In a month will the intransigent Republicans be howling that the unemployment rate spiked? When some large percentage of those unemployed start drawing food stamps and other gvernment services, inevitable with an unemployment rate near 8%, will those deficit hawks be so pleased with themselves?

They'll be more than pleased.

(And, it's closer to 200,000 jobs...but who's counting?)

Fat comfortable suburbanites will be the last to feel any pain......so the suffering/damage won`t really exist.

DesideriScuri -> RE: Sooo " the sequester hits and nothing bad really happens.” (3/1/2013 8:00:05 PM)

FR,

When businesses start to make claims of having to shed workers, or actually start shedding workers because of legislation, they are playing politics. But, when businesses start shedding jobs or making certain cuts because of a mandatory spending cut, it's not politics, but business.

Amazing.

DarkSteven -> RE: Sooo " the sequester hits and nothing bad really happens.” (3/1/2013 9:37:05 PM)

Well, the very first effect is that we realize that we have hundreds of Congressmen and Senators that are paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to pass bills and are incapable of doing their jobs.

Couple that with the cost of all their staff members, the amounts they get in benefits, to run their offices, travel, ect ect ect

Its a large amount.

The first cuts should be those.

I've been wanting to smoke what she's smoking for years. I don't think there are 170 million jobs total. Is there ?

No, there are not. There are about 134M employed in the "non farm" category (includes private and public employees), and I also found an article stating there were 28M farm workers. That only adds up to 162M (roughly).

To be certain, everyone is not going to lose his or her job. Maybe her totals included the job losses in China, India, et. al. from our reduction in spending?

Yes. Across the globe bankers are pushing "austerity measures" which basically amounts to "you need to give more money to us".

"It’s firemen first. That’s the phrase coined in 1976 by legendary Washington Monthly editor Charlie Peters to describe the way government functionaries beat back budget cuts. Dare suggest a nick in the city budget, and the mayor immediately shuts down the firehouse. The DMV back office, stacked with nepotistic incompetents, remains intact. Shrink it and no one would notice. Sell the firetruck — the people scream and the city council falls silent about any future cuts."

And there you have it. That's how you make a 2.3% "cut" sound scary. Yeah, he nailed it. Thanks for posting.

Switch-out "incapable" with unwilling and I`d agree.

+ FEMA would see $928 million in disaster relief sequestered
