Status: offline 		How big is the BDSM community? It's big...REALLY BIG. If you add "some form" of BDSM to this equation, then it's hugely big. It doesn't take much to fall into some form of BDSM behavior. You may be kinky and not even know it, until you compare yourself to another's antics.

Status: offline 		Roughly 700,000,000 world wide have experience with some form of BDSM or another. i.e 10% of the population and there are 7 billion people in the world.

So it is:

700,000,000
- ????? (people active in community or public)
= unknown


Anyone got the missing numbers? As far as active community size world wide, I have no clue.
BTW, your title and the OP ask two entirely different questions. Not sure which one you seek the answer for.

Does size really matter?
I imagine there are a whole slew of kinky folk out there, but like many people, both vanilla and kinky,
they just don't feel it necessary to discuss their intimate details with the world at large.

I disagree. Whilst I agree that many don't recognize that their kink involves BDSM and whilst I agree that some people may be in denial, I really don't think everyone would be into some form of D/s or S/m if only they recognized that part of themselves. I also think its a dangerous road to tread on.... believing everyone is into this in some way or other.

I don't think the actual 'community is very big at all and thats why people working within BDSM find it hard to make a living, unless they are in the top hundred of pro dominants or happen to own FL!

If you look at the size of the population and the amount of people who use this sort of site, go to munches, workshops, conventions and BDSM clubs, its not that many. FL has nearly 2 million members but that is 2 million world wide. In North America alone we have over 315 million people. In the UK we have 60 million and the biggest BDSM fetish site in the world only has 1/2 % of the USA and British population on its site. If we take the entire world then its far less. Lets compare that to Facebook that currently has over 1.2 billion sign ups. That is 1 in 7 people more or less!

I just looked at what percentage of the world Internet using population looked at FL yesterday and it was 0.028%. That equates to 1% of the worlds potential market.
If you estimate the membership of all the worlds fetish websites as a ratio of the worlds population its one in every 3,500 people so the chances of bumping into someone who might just be into this is 1 in 3,500!

Do people do this behind closed doors without using sites like this ? absolutely. In fact I would of thought that more people browse these sites without ever joining than people who sign up as members. Will we ever accidentally find them? its unlikely!

Informed Consent, which recently closed, allowed you to view its entire site without a signing up. Its only stipulation was that you signed a disclaimer that you were 18 or over.
Its the same on this site. If I didn't want anyone to see I have been on-line, I can come in here and browse to my hearts content. The only thing I can't do is write to people, get mail or add to a forum topic. The information is still at my fingertips.
On Fetbook its more limited and its the same on Fetlife you can't get beyond the sign in page.

In each human are - more or less developed - D/s and/or S/m tendencies hidden in our subconscious. Sometimes they are sleeping the whole life of this human, sometimes anything happens and they awake. The fact, that these tendencies are inside of us all, was the purpose of my statement about the huge & 100% community..... ;-)

Something like, everyone is on the scale but the scale ranges from zero, no conscious awareness, no subconscious instinct towards BDSM, to 10 which is totally into it.

If the "right" Kick-off-impulse isn´t set it looks like, that nothing is existent. But exactly the fact of presence is the big surprise for many people after their first recognition.

Maybe tendencies is the wrong term - maybe pre-disposition meets it more.....

Those who don't talk about it generally don't do anything about it either. They are not, in my opinion, members of the community.

Status: offline 		I'd have to know the definition of community being used. It is commonly used here to indicate public play, in a dungeon or play parties. Or attending meetings of self identified kinky people such as a munch or workshop.

If that's the definition being used, then it's much smaller than those who enjoy a varied sex life. But how do you classify someone? If they tried tying their partner's wrists once and didn't like it, are they kinky because they engaged in mild bondage once? Do you have to do it ten times? A hundred? Over three years? Over thirty?

If you were to say "how many people have tried or do kink play, at whatever frequency" it probably would be a good sized group, if you narrowed it to people who identified as being into BD/SM, it would be relatively small , whether open (smallest group) or not. Not even really sure defining the community matters much, in the end doesn't seem to bring much benefit, other then another label *shrug*. I think the ultimate goal as with any sexuality is for both people who are out and not, to try and work towards a world where how many are into it isn't important, what is important is whoever is into it can lead their lives in peace and not fear judgement or worse. The open people in the BD/SM world help push that, by making people realize that 'ordinary' people do this, the book 50 shades of gray and the like, while reviled (not entirely without reason), helps push things out there, and that is the point. I think a lot of people are kinky, if for the simple reasons that it is very much play, and we don't lose that ability once we 'grow up', so it isn't surprising it enters into the realm of sex as well, how many doesn't really matter, though.

I would have to disagree. The position is much the same as those who would like to take up the position of "everybody is at least a little bit bi-sexual". There are a lot of people out there who would like to think so because it helps to alleviate their own struggles with their sexual identity, but it's just not the case. In some circles, this is called the false consensus effect. There is a great comfort to certain individuals to believe that everyone is the same to some degree.

It is My opinion that the Kinsey scale on sexuality could be rather similar to the scale that could be used for kink. In the simplest terms, zero to six. Zero being vanilla, missionary sex with the lights out (yet having orgasms and completely sexually content and satisfied) to six being the kinkiest stuff on earth (the not a feather, not even the whole chicken, but the entire barnyard types). Sure, it's a bell curve and lots of folks fit in anywhere from one to five, but you can't deny that the zero folks and the six folks exist.




ETA - Please note that this post (and particularly the one through five comment) was made with the post from Des in mind. There are people out there (let's call them the "ones" on the scale) who think oral sex, anal sex, or woman on top positions are kinky.
