Very hard to quantify. If you were to say "how many people have tried or do kink play, at whatever frequency" it probably would be a good sized group, if you narrowed it to people who identified as being into BD/SM, it would be relatively small , whether open (smallest group) or not. Not even really sure defining the community matters much, in the end doesn't seem to bring much benefit, other then another label *shrug*. I think the ultimate goal as with any sexuality is for both people who are out and not, to try and work towards a world where how many are into it isn't important, what is important is whoever is into it can lead their lives in peace and not fear judgement or worse. The open people in the BD/SM world help push that, by making people realize that 'ordinary' people do this, the book 50 shades of gray and the like, while reviled (not entirely without reason), helps push things out there, and that is the point. I think a lot of people are kinky, if for the simple reasons that it is very much play, and we don't lose that ability once we 'grow up', so it isn't surprising it enters into the realm of sex as well, how many doesn't really matter, though.
