Your options are: BDSM is an illness or it's normal.

Since when is not being normal an illness?

I'm a geek. I know the inner workings of a computer - right down to the transistors. I was awed by the simplicity of Einstein's theory of relativity and floored by how many others before him had missed it. I vote every election.

Is any of that normal?

No.

But does any of that make me mentally ill?

Normal is the average. That would mean that everyone has brown hair, 1.04 breasts, 96% testicles, half a penis, one ovary...

... I doubt the very validity of the question.

What we do is not normal, but it isn't a mental disease.

Normal has many meanings, it can mean statistically in the middle of the park, typical, average, or it can mean disordered (as in abnormal). I think BD/SM is outside the norm, but I don't think it is abnormal in the sense of being disordered. On top of everything else, anyone who has ever seen a shrink or read anything about psychology will realize that no one is normal per se, we all have quirks and phobias and neuroses and such that 'deviate from the norm' *smile*.

I find it intriguing that normal in my erotic 'mind' is different than normal in my 'actions'.

For example, would you pervs find 'Dolcett' normal?

I had never thought about it, but yes, I commit illegal and perverse actions in my fantasies all the time. Things I'd never do in the real world.

Seems to me, upon further thought, that there are two worlds for the sadist.
1. Erotic mind
2. Erotic action

The sadist who can't keep them apart has a mental illness.

Were all previous generals and kings and emperors sadists?

Or have we changed?

Im a sick fuck, and I suppose mentally ill, but have never gotten my own chapter in the DSM as I have repeatedly requested, they said I have to do some serial killing for that, and to tell the truth, I am just too fuckin lazy for all that.

So if they actually commit those erotic actions from their erotic mind, they are mentally ill?? I guess I gotta let Master know that but then again, he'd probably admit to being mentally ill.

The question is too vague. Sadism can and cannot be a mental illness. It all depends on the actions. And certainly not just in the BDSM community. I have seen more than enough vanilla relationships that were sadistic in every wrong sense of the word.

So should the poll question rightly be:
Is sadism a mental illness in the wrong hands?

Yep, that approximates my position and I couldn't vote either way in this poll. But I'm a Brit and we make an especial effort to be 'eccentric'. ;-)

Yeah - I didn't answer the poll question. The either/or doesn't really fit reality. =p But I'm imagining the poll was just there to start the discussion...

I have no doubt. Pyramus is a thoughtful chap and not given to simplistic either/or thinking.
