Molach I barely even eat, yesterday all I had was chicken corn on cob and potato's augrauten today the only thing I had was a small bowl of cereal. In Fact I am under eating, yes hard to belive a fat person who under eats lol.

Feline, while you think you barely ate with the menu you just gave. What you did do was consume a large quantity of carbs. You need to understand that the body burns carbs first for fuel and then it burns fat. If you take out the carbs you burn more fat.

I started dieting, hate that word, 3 months ago. At first I did South Beach and it's a great plan, but I wanted more so now I'm doing Atkin's. I have lost 19 lbs so far and have been walking on the treadmill 6 days a week. I understand you have a bad back, but there has to be something you can do even if it's an easy walk for 15 minutes a day.

Stick to whole foods as much as possible. Lean meats, eggs, full fat cheeses (no more then 4 oz a day) butter, heavy cream. Eat salads with no sugar dressings. Use oil and vinegar or mayonaisse dressings. Read the labels of everything! More than anything don't eat any white foods, such as white flour, sugar, milk, rice, potatoes. They are all bad for you and will put the pounds on big time. There is a wonderful site called Fitday where you can enter all the foods you eat and keep track. It's www.fitday.com  I love it!! I also post on a lowcarb message board where I get support and learn tons of great info. If you want the site just mail me on the other side and I will give it to you.

You can do this!! I ate horribly for years and years and I never exercised. Now I actually get up in the mornings and want to go workout. I actually love veggies! Find a good plan and stick to it!! You deserve to have control over your eating and not let food control you!! :)

UR I've been more active since the last threads, I don't watch much tv at all either:D My pc is my bain of exsitance, I rather be on it than out of my own house and stuff haha bit that ischanging!

Kiska I have special back needs to consider when or if I ever decide to do work out vidios, most the usual prescribed exorcises they are now finding out are not ok at all for people with back problems. Like remember the sit with legs in a wide v and reach from side to side? The kiaser health book on back care actually says not to do those any more, and cherry picker exorcise IS NOT good for people with back problems. Same with crunches. Walking and swimming were recomended though and lucky me it's swiming season and even lucker I have a suit haha

I have back problems as well, which is why I invested in the Core Fitness program ... It has helped me to strengthen my back but also my stomach so my back isn't doing ALL the work ...

I think Atkins is handing FelinePersuasion a loaded gun and telling her to point it at her head and shoot. Atkins *might* be okay for short term weight loss goals, I know it can work. But from this discussion it's clear that FelinePersuasion doesn't have the knowledge or background to relate to food correctly in a healthy way for when she's done with Atkins - and you can't do Atkins forever.

That's why there are no short cuts. I know she wants short cuts, but sorry - there just aren't any here to be had.

FelinePersuasion must learn more about food, She needs to eat healthy and exercise and understand all the details that connect up to good living habits. She can do it, and I think its a disservice to her to suggest short cuts when she pointedly can't use them wisely given her current knowledge. LuckyAlbatross said something very similar when she highlighted that fad diets have to eventually be replaced with sound, longer-term eating habits.

Atkins can work, but it's for diet experts only. You really have to pay attention to your body and make sure you enter ketosis and stay there for effective weight loss. From what I see FelinePersuasion doesn't understand the first fucking thing about a proper diet, and now you expect her to understand and maintain a healthy state of ketosis? C'mon...!

Oh oh! Hamburgers!

When I make hamburgers, I mix instant oatmeal into the meat ... It sounds weird but trust me, its WONDERFUL! I've also mixed in fat free ranch dressing but go easy on that because fat free doesn't always mean its actually good for you. But seriously, with the instant oatmeal, you're using less meat to make each patty and it gives it a really good texture. My boyfriend LOVES my hamburgers ... He seems to think its some huge secret recipe thing.

I also like to mix in diced veggies ... Mushrooms, onions, peppers (of all colors) ... Just whatever I like to eat ... Also, try using ground turkey instead of ground beef ... I know a friend of mine actually uses 2/3 ground turkey and 1/3 ground beef so there's still some beefy flavor. She also uses Worchestire Sauce (I think I spelled that wrong ...) for added flavor ...

Go easy on the ketchup! Loads of sugar in that ...

Of course it makes you crazy mad when people assume you eat and eat all day long. My mother has a bad back and I'm convinced a problem with her thyroid. The poor thing really eats like a bird and the pounds barely come off. Going off plan for even one meal sets her back a week. So, I understand what you are upset about.

Swimming is awesome and I totally encourage that as a form of exercise. If I weren’t so self-conscious about my weight in a suit I would be in our pool at the apartments. But, vanity is a hard thing to let go of. LOL.

Educating yourself on the truths about losing weight is the best thing you can do for yourself. We have been fed a pack of lies with the low calorie/low fat diets. Since that came into fashion obesity and diabetes has been on a steady rise in this country. Eating fat doe NOT make you fat!! Eating whole foods that are good for you and aren't processed with garbage, drinking lots of water and exercise will give you the results you want.

Of course Atkins can work and it can be done for a lifetime. What so many people do when they think of Atkins is think only about the Induction Phase; where carbs are greatly reduced to jump-start the body into losing weight. You do go into ketosis, lose your appetite, and cravings for high carb foods that have ZERO nutritional value.

Induction is supposed to be for two weeks, and then you slowly add in good carbs. Lifetime maintenance on the Atkins plan lets you enjoy many foods including healthy carbs in the way of low starch veggies, fruits, nuts and beans. Ketosis is not meant for long term!

Of course Feline needs to fully educate herself on nutrition and proper weight loss. Eating corn and potatoes and not getting enough calories will not help her to maintain any kind of weight loss. Most people will fail on low calorie diets because the body can’t go hungry long term.

I know women that have used Atkins and lost tremendous amounts of weight and have kept it off for many years. Yes, like any good plan you have to work it and follow the steps.

Feline, I really do encourage you to educate yourself and discuss anything diet related with your doctor. There is a ton of information out there and just like I taught myself what is right and wrong, you can too.

One of the easiest diets I found to follow it a diabetic diet.  You can find them online for free.  Just be smart about it.  Watch portions.  And there are alot of "free foods" you can snack on to keep the cravings away.  By free foods I mean those that have been proven to have less calories then what is burned eating them.  Now does that mean grab a whole bag of baby carrots and eat the whole thing.  No, again portion control.  And don't deprive yourself of things you really like.  I'm a chocolate freak, so as a treat, I will have a fudge bar or fat free pudding to get my fix.  Both a low fat and low calorie ways to treat yourself.  You may like something different but the trick is finding what satisfies that trigger for you.

Of all raw meats, chicken is the least icky on my list ...

Ground meat makes my skin crawl and if possible I get someone else to do it ... lol ... Or I just wear gloves so I can peel them off and pitch them.

For a lot of people the computer and internet has replaced the television as a 'boob tube' ... With the computer and internet, you can interact, therefore you feel like you're doing something and before you know it, you're spending 10 hours a day on your butt in a computer chair.

This alone is a fascinating subject. However... I'll leave it alone, because I don't want to veer off from the OP.

quote:

You're right though, walking will help. When I lived in Texas (also a rural place) I walked everywhere I could. During the summer, when 2 hours walks were simply not an option due to the heat, I would wait until the evening when it cooled down and go for a walk with my dog. The dog LOVED it and it made me feel awesome. I really miss that around here where about the only place I can safely walk with my dog is around my subdivision and people would give me really odd looks if I did that for 2 hours. LOL

It’s all in the mind. The folks who tell you that physical exercise is mundane and boring, are the same ones who get in their cars three and four times a day and drive down to the same store for piddly-ass stuff – Go figure.

Personally, I frame the solution differently than most : For me, the solution for losing weight and being fit, is no different than leaving a job with no possibility for advancement or exiting a failed marriage. The line isn't as fine as most think. One only needs to reach a certain level of pain before true will-power is exercised and a change is made. We can wish upon a star and talk about it all day long; that just means we haven't crossed the line and still remain in our comfort zones.

FP. do you have PCOS? Have you ever been tested for PCOS? That can make it difficult to lose weight. I have PCOS and have a hellish time loosing weight. Fortunately a friend of mine informed of two things that helped her ... She had a baby using the help of a fertility clinic. (OK that's pretty drastic and certainly not for everyone.) She also found an endocrinologist who helped her to treat PCOS and get on a good diet plan that she can use for life that helps her to keep the weight off. She started out being 5'1" and weighing over 200 lbs. Now she weighs 120 - 127 and looks and feels healthy. Just a thought ...

My sister has PCOS, Endometriosis, Hypoglycemia and she's Insulin Resistent, plus a few other things.  Her Endocrinologist put her on The Zone diet, modified just a touch for her specifically.  The Zone is a great plan as is the G.I. (Glycemic Index).

She lost a LOT of weight and after ten years, was finally able to have a baby.

i too have back problems...a fractured vertebrae, three herniated disks, and arthritis.

i've found that really low-impact dance (i used to be heavily into dance until my condition was so bad i had to stop) and low-impact yoga helped. if you can find a yoga instructor that knows a bit about back problems, that's always good. also, physical therapy is good as well - it didn't do much for my pain, but i was able to learn which exercises to do and which to stay away from. :)

This is all very true.  My only comment is that we've built a massive suburban society and infrastructure in this country, and walking to the store for piddly-ass stuff is often not an option.  Of course consumers' choices have a lot to do with the way developers have laid out new construction, so we only have ourselves to blame, and if people make walkable neighborhoods an important criterion in deciding where to buy a house, things will probably change.  But a lot of bad decisions from the recent past are carved into the ground and aren't going to change overnight.

I saw someone mention using ground turkey in hamburgers.  We do that here, as well.  Minus the bun, since we don't need them.  If you take ground turkey and add a little worcestershire sauce, a little garlic, and a little of something mildly spicy (we use creole seasoning) it makes a very moist and tasty patty.  You won't miss the bun.  You can also make a nice meatloaf that way.  Although for portion sizes, it's best to cook only what you need for a single meal.  It prevents going back for seconds.

When we have turkey patties (and we will tonight) I like to serve mixed veggies, a salad, and frozen fries baked in the oven with them.  Granted, fries in any form aren't the best thing for you, but baked is better than other methods.  And of course, fruit for dessert.  Probably frozen cherries for him and blueberries for me.
