TheHeretic -> Reduce prison overcrowding - stop electing Democrats! (3/11/2013 6:19:18 PM)

Not quite up to the Blagojevich level, of trying to sell the seat our President left vacant in the Senate, but yet another Democrat ex-official should soon be heading off to federal prison.

http://detroit.cbslocal.com/2013/03/11/verdict-in-kwame-kilpatrick-case-charge-by-charge/

More to come, I'm sure. The City of Bell may wind up setting a new standard.

Good, I hope they keep it up... its a shame other...people arent so willing to look into corruption at all levels

For those with issues for links, here are a few snips, and something that should load easily.

quote:

DETROIT — Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was convicted Monday of corruption charges and then sent to jail to await his prison sentence in yet another dramatic setback for a man who once was among the nation's youngest big-city leaders.

Jurors convicted Kilpatrick of a raft of crimes, including racketeering conspiracy, which carries a maximum punishment of 20 years behind bars. He was portrayed during a five-month trial as an unscrupulous politician who took bribes, rigged contracts and lived far beyond his means while in office until fall 2008.

...

Prosecutors said Kilpatrick ran a "private profit machine" out of Detroit's City Hall. The government presented evidence to show he got a share of the spoils after ensuring that Bobby Ferguson's excavating company was awarded millions in work from the water department.

Business owners said they were forced to hire Ferguson as a subcontractor or risk losing city contracts. Separately, fundraiser Emma Bell said she gave Kilpatrick more than $200,000 as his personal cut of political donations, pulling cash from her bra during private meetings. A high-ranking aide, Derrick Miller, told jurors that he often was the middle man, passing bribes from others.

Internal Revenue Service agents said Kilpatrick spent $840,000 beyond his mayoral salary.

U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade hailed the verdict and said Kilpatrick was "grabbing money from the citizens he was elected to serve."

...

The government said Kilpatrick abused the Civic Fund, a nonprofit fund he created to help distressed Detroit residents. There was evidence that it was used for yoga lessons, camps for his kids, golf clubs and travel.

"The scale of corruption was breathtaking," Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Chutkow said in a closing argument on Feb. 15. "We cannot turn away and ignore the corruption that occurred in this city. It is time for the former mayor and his accomplices to be held accountable for their crimes — it is past time."

Kilpatrick, 42, was elected in 2001 at age 31. He resigned in 2008 and pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice in a different scandal involving sexually explicit text messages and an extramarital affair with his chief of staff.

The Democrat spent 14 months in prison for violating probation in that case after a judge said he failed to report assets that could be put toward his $1 million restitution to Detroit.

That guy was a one man crime scene. I'm glad they convicted him..No bail before the sentence is even better.

TheHeretic -> RE: Reduce prison overcrowding - stop electing Democrats! (3/11/2013 6:41:56 PM)

Yeah. Seeing that they revoked bail was a nice cap.

LOL, Lucy! Is that your way of saying that you really want to come up with some comparable Republican(s), and Google is failing you, so you hope wild accusations and innuendo will be just as good as indictments and jury verdicts?

It's the seriousness of the charge, not the existence of evidence, right?

KP was a mess and a half...and don't let me get started on his extra-marital issues. I hope he has a good time in prison. Maybe I'll Fedex him a harmonica.

That is even more pathetic than I expected, but having a BP ad sponsoring Democratic Hub made it worth the click.

Moving on from a cheap attempt to make prison overcrowding a partisan political issue, one might ask why there are so many prisoners in the USA?

The USA imprisons more of its citizens than any other country in the world. According to one source, there are 2, 019, 234 prisoners in US jails (2011 figures). On a per capita basis the USA leads the world with 715 prisoners per 100,000 population, almost 5 times the world average of 148 per 100,000. I've seen reports that some American States spend more on their prison budget than they do on universities, which can only be described as bizarre.

"Overall the total crime rate of the United States is similar to that of other highly developed countries" - so wiki advises us ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_in_the_United_States ). So the incarceration rate cannot be explained as a consequence of higher crime rates. US prisons have acquired a reputation of being particularly harsh places, with rape, murder assaults commonplace events, drugs easily available and little emphasis on rehabilitation.

So why does the USA, a country that proclaims its love of freedom, deprive more of its citizens of their freedom by throwing them into jail than anywhere else?

Been done before

Good they got another one [;)]

My bad. I forgot to point out...

After more than five months of complex testimony and five weeks of still more tangled deliberations, a jury found Mr. Ryan, a Republican, guilty of all 18 felony charges against him, including racketeering conspiracy, mail fraud, tax fraud and making false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Would simply hate to disappoint [;)]

Moral of this story?

Reduce prison overcrowding - stop electing Career Politicians!

Lots of reasons, Tweak, including one that ties right back to the joke you perhaps subconsciously knew was in the thread title, but still missed. Democrats love few things more than a government jobs program. [;)]

See the sigline, and g'night.

Wow. Corrupt AND stupid.

Everyone knows that if you're going to designated a subcontractor, you don't explicitly TELL everyone about it. You quietly make sure that only contractors who teamed with that sub win contracts, and wait until people figure it out.

Also, he was too stupid to know about laundering income? FFS, I read about it when I was twelve and asked my father what the term means. And I had (and have) no intention of directly using that knowledge. If I was seeking to break the law, I would research how to do it.

The guy was so dumb that he lied under oath during an investigation, and his lies were easily disproved by simply pulling up his text message history.

Yes Rich, of course, you know exactly what I'm thinking about every minute of every day dont you darling!
If it werent for your twuntish strawmen posts, I would be lost for words, bless your widdle heart
You dont think there is corruption everywhere, in politics in business? in every level of government? any party, any country??? Ive got enough of them here in canada, locally, provincially and especially nationwide, The UK is the same.

And if you think I cant find corruption and other bullshit using google or any number of resources you have lost your grip.
That I gave you time enough to agree he deserves jail, was all it was merited, Im sorry it disapointed you so much you had to make up 4 strawmen in response.
you simply dont get it at all.
sad...

Democrats and Republicans are both guilty of having a history of scandals. Its not only the Democrats, that for sure.Republicans have had their scandals too.Anyone remember Mark Foley, the former Republican Congressman from Florida? The scandals fall on both sides of the aisle.

The topic of this thread is Kwame the Clown and the good news for the city today. You want to start a new thread, have at it. This asshat is one of the reasons Detroit is having such problems. Now if they can root out the rest of the crooks maybe it will have a chance.

How dumb does one have to be to start a thread beginning with "Stop prison overcrowding" and then refuse to discuss guess what - prison overcrowding? [8|]

Perhaps someone should consider running for Mayor of Detroit - if Kwame's antics are anything to go by, it appears that a terminal lack of intelligence is no bar to achieving that (ahem) exalted status.

The topic wasn't really prison overcrowding. That was a joke. The real topic of the OP was Kwame's - a Democrat - sentencing.

Excellent that they nailed one corrupt bastard. I'd love to get the rest.

Sadly, I don't think this is a Republican or Democratic problem. I think if we nailed all the politicians who have done criminal acts then DC would be a ghost town and lower levels of government would fair only somewhat better.
