jlf1961 -> Okay, I am confused, or, are these people aware they are not at a healthy weight. (3/12/2013 10:14:16 PM)

I did a google search for natural women, in otherwords, no augmentations done at all.

Most of the pictures fell into two categories;
1) so skinny you can count ribs and clearly see shoulder joints, no body fat at all, and apparently no muscle mass either.
Or
2) Women bigger than I am. I mean women bragging at being over 350 pounds!

At my heaviest, I was 360lbs, I am now at 248, and still losing. My goal is to get to 215 to 225, the same weight I was when I was in the army. I started to lose weight after my doctor told me that if I didnt, I might have a couple of years before I have a heart attack, and maybe 15 years before I die.

Nothing like being scared shitless to get you to do something healthy.

In a related search on healthy bodies for men, sites came up with cut and chisled ripped men or guys that are bigger than I am.

Then there are plenty of fat and proud websites.

I can understand being a five to 20 pounds overweight, but being that much underweight?

What happened to trying to be healthy?

Right now I am 30 pounds overweight, and as I said, 20 pounds overweight is not that bad, but 20 pounds underweight is.

When I was at 360, I had trouble breathing, walking a short distance would put me out of breath. In fact, I was fucking miserable.

How can anyone want to be so overweight or underweight that their health is severely impacted and thinking it is the greatest thing in the world?

GoddessManko -> RE: Okay, I am confused, or, are these people aware they are not at a healthy weight. (3/13/2013 4:55:19 AM)

Well some people are endomorph, some ectomorph and some mesomorph. I weightlift as much as a man but i'm a size 0. My body is an ectomorph so I have to work harder to retain muscle and cut than a mesomorph. Ectomorphs are naturally round, They have to eat more protein and exercise more rigorously than most. My best advice is to change up your workouts for muscle confusion[sm=mistress.gif]

ChatteParfaitt -> RE: Okay, I am confused, or, are these people aware they are not at a healthy weight. (3/13/2013 5:14:16 AM)

Being incredibly skinny is the (relatively) new in look. It's thought that for optimum health, you need zero fat on your body. Of course, this isn't true, but some of the younger generation are so paranoid about being fat that they've missed out on the fact that some body fat is good for you.

Regardless of body type, most people who eat a healthy diet and get a reasonable amount of exercise can keep their weight to within 20 pounds under or over the published recommendations. People outside of those parameters are at health risk, even if they are underweight.

It's all about what society and culture and the media portray as what's right and beautiful.

Here's an example of what the artist Paul Rubens found beautiful 4 centuries ago.

Note the well rounded figures AND the great muscle mass.

I don't understand the OP's confusion.

Are you confused that there are all types of bodies in the world?

Why is that confusing?

Why are you assuming that either the very thin or very overweight are not aware they are not at a healthy weight?

For that matter, why you do assume that they are not healthy?

I don't see the point of your thread unless it was to make sure everyone knew that you lost alot of weight.

Despite what people say weight can be controlled in almost all cases…All it takes is mental discipline. The simple fact is some people lack this discipline and chose to claim they are happy with their weight…unhealthy or not.

Of course they are full of crap, fooling themselves., or they have a mental illness.

I do feel for people who have this problem but find it hard to believe when they look in the mirror they don’t wish they were…well…normal.

Of course the above is just opinion and I know I will take flak for saying it but I think I am right at least when it comes to the majority of people with weight problems.

ps.... I am including myself...like most over the years my weight has varied and my mental discipline was lacking as well.

The confusion stems from the fact that people dangerously over weight or dangerously underweight seem to embrace these conditions as something to relish, a status symbol.

Since when has being unhealthy become a status symbol to be proud of?

There are medical studies that prove that being severely under or over weight is dangerous to the body.

quote:

The term obese is often used interchangeably with morbidly obese, but these are two separate terms signifying different levels of weight over ordinary body weight. Someone who falls into the obese category weighs about 20% more than what is considered normal for his or her height, giving the person a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above. It doesn’t take much extra weight to be considered obese, and in developed countries like the US, a fairly large percent of people are in this category. To be morbidly obese means that person has very high body fat percentage, and his or her BMI might be anywhere from 35 to 40 and up. There are disputes on whether BMI of 35 or 40 is the beginning point of morbid obesity, but 40 is the more typically accepted measurement.

When extra fat accumulates in the body, it begins to have negative effects on a number of the organs and body systems. Some conditions for which this much weight is a risk factor for include cardiac disease, sleep apnea, type II diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, stress incontinence, arthritis

What Does it Mean to be Morbidly Obese?

I am 6' tall. when I had the physical that started my weight loss, the extra weight was impacting my heart, lungs and my blood pressure was so bad they put me on two medications for it.

I was not happy being overweight and the weight gain stemmed from side effects to a medication I was on, and a period of depression that lasted a very long time.

Being overweight contributed to the death of my mother, and she fought with weight issues all her life.

quote:

Underweight

While focus is frequently placed on the high end of BMI values, a body mass index that classifies a person as underweight and severely underweight can hold just as many dangers. Someone is considered underweight if her BMI value is anywhere between 16.5 and 18.4. Below 16.5 is typically regarded as severely underweight.
Significance of Underweight

When body mass index drops to the status of underweight or severely underweight, an individual is at higher risk of developing anemia, bone loss, digestive issues, hormonal issues, kidney problems and heart problems such as arrhythmias and heart failure. The American Diabetes Association says that low BMI can increase mortality due to heart failure.

This also concerns the very skinny, I mean the people that you can count their ribs through their shirts and the shoulder joint is very evident. In other words a BMI of near zero.

^^This^^

I'm well over 250 pounds (at 5'8"). My doctor is not concerned with my weight. Two years ago I completed my first half marathon and was getting ready to start training for my second one. This fall I'll be doing the Avon Two-Day walk where we walk 26.2 miles the first day and 13.1 miles the second.

By the charts, I'm no where near a "healthy weight" but all my numbers are good (blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure, pulse, etc.) and within a healthy range without medication. My body type may not be everyone's cup of tea, and I'm OK with that. It doesn't have to be.

I think CP touched the point correctly. The media portrays what is "in" and " out". In the era of her pic she posted, the more pale and rounder a woman was it was because she wasn't outside working and could eat plenty because she had money to do so. Now a days, the more tan and skinny, is because the woman has time to tan and workout because she doesn't have to work.....or so it was explained in an article I read. Which makes sense. I myself do not enjoy women who are too skinny. I like thick curvy women. But I've often seen women who are simply obese use the terms thick and curvy. There is a difference.

I have found many overweight women attractive, but considering the definition of obese seems to depend on which report you are reading, the term may or may not apply.

However, morbidly obese is not, when I was 140 pounds over weight, I was morbidly obese.

needlesandpins -> RE: Okay, I am confused, or, are these people aware they are not at a healthy weight. (3/13/2013 1:00:23 PM)

i'm considered over weight. i'm a size 14/16 uk and considerably fitter than alot of women slimmer than me. fitness and health where weight is concerned is subjective. i'm afraid i'm not going to be dictated to by someone who throws a figure out there that i should be for my height according to them. the most used method for working out someone's bmi is a crock of crap. it can give totally the wrong outcome because it's not taking into account muscle mass as part of weight.

for example; at 5'6 i used to be a uk size 8 when younger. one of the girls i work with is a size 8 and weights just over 8.7st. we are roughly the same height, and yet i weighed 10.4st. chances are though that she carries more fat than i ever did because i was a runner, cyclist, swimmer, and horse rider while she does bugga all. i've always carried alot of muscle, and put muscle mass on easily. i know i have to stick to a high protein diet rather than carbs to keep the weight off.

i've always been curvy as i have an hour glass figure and carry my weight evenly over all of my body. i've just lost some weight i had put back on, but that's because i've not eaten much for the last 5 weeks....mostly much less than 1000 calories a day. due to a health problem i have spent years dieting to try and maintain my weight, but actually putting it on still. it's soul destroying to have to constantly battle with weight. for the exercise i do and everything else i do i'm supposed to need 2500 callories a day. however, i put weight on at 1600 a day. i'm perminantly on a diet [>:] and it can really get me down when all i want to do is eat normally.

Slight derail but where I come from 'thick' means 'stupid'. I have to do a mind-flip every time I hear someone describing a 'thick and curvy' woman. My brain thinks 'that's a bit mean!'

Unless of course you do have a thing for stupid people... takes all sorts as they say! [:D]
