This is not even a story. I live 15 miles from Detroit, and I can tell you first hand, the city is the armpit of the country. The city council hasn't done anything meaningful in years - they table every vote that matters, and instead pass "resolutions" against things like the Governor saying they have a financial crisis. Literally - they pass resolutions condemning statements made by the Governor - not acts, simple statements. They're running a deficit that is absolutely unexplainable and are BILLIONS in debt. Billions of dollars in debt, but they can't put text-books in schools. I mean, really?

With the disaster the politicians (and people by electing said politicians) have created, they should be THRILLED to be getting a financial manager - I would have sent in a bulldozer crew to fix that shit hole.

The politicians running Detroit did this to themselves. They have proven that they can't run the city and the people of Detroit are the ones suffering because of it. Do you honestly believe that they should be punished because they live in a place run by crooks? How far into the pit do you want them to slide before someone steps up and tries to help?

I'm ALL for helping. Hey, it's kind of my life's mission to see if we can at least tone down the whole corruption in government thing. But not THIS way. This is Obama's way.... fuck the laws... fuck the constitution.... fuck the very principles upon which this country is founded in the name of some sort of goodness.

Somehow there had to be an education given to the populace and emergency voting. How am I supposed to get comfortable with simply dispensing with democracy when it doesn't turn out well?

Sort of the same way that *you* supporting this sovereign citizen whining about the government stepping in, means that you embrace the ideals of their racist and lunatic fringe, like it or not?

Let me guess... 'Buh - buuuh - buuuh - That's diiiiiiferent!!'

Jeff, you have an oft repeated bias against Obama and I'm okay with that except when it gets in the way of your understanding of the Federalist System of the United States. I don't know if it is different in Canada but have a look here for an explanation when you get a chance.

I submit that the OP's emotionalism and your Obamaphobia are blind to the reality of the American system:

The fifty American states are separate sovereigns with their own state constitutions, state governments, and state courts (including state supreme courts).[49] They retain plenary power to make laws covering anything not preempted by the federal Constitution, federal statutes, or international treaties ratified by the federal Senate.

Like it or not, a city is a creature of the State. It exists by the good grace of the state legislature and the state constitution. Unless there is some prohibition in the State constitution that stops it from acting it can step in and assume control of a city.

Your comments above about Obama are evidence of ignorance of our laws and a childish hissy fit against our president. If you think otherwise do some research and present an adult argument. Otherwise, I find your comments about fascism in America highly offensive and ignorant.

Yeah I know. We tried to have a fact based argument and tried to zero it down to exactly one element so that it'd be easy to keep it fact based. You chose not to engage. So now we get down to name calling.

I'll tell you what. I'll just go ahead trying to understand actual facts, modifying my position over time as I do so. You can continue with insults and name calling.

The insult is your repeatedly calling my nation and my president fascist when you clearly do not have a clue as to how our government works.

But wait. Did I not recant my use of the term fascist as an incorrect usage of the term? I readily agree that what Benito Mussolini meant by "corporate" doesn't sound much like the concept of a modern corporation. But in case you missed it, I'll say it again.

I agree that my logic chain resulting in the term "fascism" was incorrect and I'd still like to know if any political science guys can offer up a more accurate label to describe "selling government to capital". I wonder if the correct term for that is "capitalism" but I'm loathe to jump to that obvious conclusion given how wrong I was about "fascism".

In no way does my recanting of the term "fascism" change the factual basis of what Obama is doing. I just had the wrong label. Do I think "your president and country" are evil? Oh HELL YEAH! I just don't' think fascist was the right descriptor.

So why did you repeat the slander in #24 and #28?? Are you really prepared to compare Obama to Hitler and the US to Nazi Germany? We have already endured those obscenities from our own Neanderthals.

You recant and then reuse the ugly slur. That's bullshit.

Post #28: 3/15, 11:49am - the latest of the posts you are complaining about.
Post #38: 3/16 4:34pm - where I recanted my use of the word fascism.

Are you experiencing some sort of temporal paradox?

Look, maybe I'll start some individual threads and we can look at this question point by point in a fact based way. You can participate if you choose but you didn't want to do that previously. As it sits, I'm pretty happy to ditch the word "fascism" and stick with "sold out the government to big business" and "rapidly approaching totalitarian police state... if not there already".

I'd still like to know if there is a political science term for a government run by Capital. I think it's quite possible that the "scare word" I'm looking for is "capitalist".

It appears that the Mods have stepped in and deleted your post #38 and fucked with our discussion . . . at least as of this moment in which I write, as well as my post explaining corporatism. Presently #38 is a post by politesub. Great move by the mods giving us no notice of their stealth interference.
