jlf1961 -> A pope practicing Humility? The Cardinals and bishops will kill him in a month (3/27/2013 7:04:07 PM)

quote:

Pope Francis seems reluctant to be pope, preferring title bishop of Rome in hint of priorities
He still goes by "Bergoglio" when speaking to friends, seems reluctant to call himself pope and has decided to live in the Vatican hotel rather than the grand papal apartment in the Apostolic Palace.

It might seem as if Pope Francis is in a bit of denial over his new job as leader of the world's 1.2-billion Catholics. Or perhaps he's simply changing the popular idea of what it means to be pope, keeping the no-frills style he cultivated as archbishop of Buenos Aires in ways that may have broad implications for the church.

The world has already seen how Francis has cast aside many trappings of the papacy, refusing to don the red velvet cape Benedict XVI wore for official occasions and keeping the simple, iron-plated pectoral cross he used as bishop and archbishop.

Sorry I am not used to the "humble" pope. I mean come on, these guys are clothes nuts and have to have the best residence in Rome. What gives?

I would wonder if it has anything to do with which order he belongs to.

Anyone that knows anything about the Catholic church knows that priests and nuns are members of particular orders. Some of those orders require a vow of poverty while some don't. I think that may have something to do with the choices of the current pontiff.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Not every priest belongs to a particular order. Many of them are simply "diocesan priests," who belong to a particular diocese.

Pope Francis is a member of the Jesuit order. I don't recall all of their beliefs and priorities, but they are definitely a little more "hardcore" than other orders...appropriate, given their birth as a major part of the Counter-Reformation. These sorts of things seem to be right in the alley of the Jesuit order, though.

The members of The Society of Jesus take vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. Pope Francis is of course honoring his vow of poverty, it amazes me to the point of humor when you see the surprise and shock of the media when reporting on this over the last two weeks.

All Catholic priests take a vow of poverty along with ones of chastity and obedience

Yeah, because all the poor people living in poverty live in fancy apartments, heated rooms, and three fine meals a day. The church is more concern about making money, pushing its ideals down other people's throats, and surrounding itself with gold. Sounds like a modern day corporation, rather than those who follow Jesus.

As much as I would like Pope Francis to change many things about the Church. I sadly believe he'll find the same thing President Obama did when he first came to office: the 'corporate elite' of that organization will dictate policy and dress code, NOT, the person in the main office. President Obama wanted to change many things about the Federal Government. But Democrat and Republican alike (more Republican than Democrat), wanted to keep the status quo going. Undermining President Obama means they can keep things 'as is'; which would explain why Congress's approval rating is in the toilet, right?

Only time will tell if the Pope can made solid changes for the better.

There appears to be some skepticism regarding the Pope's commitment to the poor. Guardian columnist George Monbiot is one of those openly expressing doubts:

"When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why they are poor, they call me a communist.” So said the Brazilian archbishop Dom Hélder Câmara. His adage exposes one of the great fissures in the Catholic Church, and the emptiness of the new Pope’s claim to be on the side of the poor."

FWIW, the Brazilian archbishop quoted above, Dom Hélder Câmara was murdered not too long after giving this quote. It is widely believed that the murderers were acting on behalf of the rich landowners and capitalists he criticised.

It amazes me what passes for poverty and humility for a Pope. He used to cook his own meals! He drove his own car!

Level -> RE: A pope practicing Humility? The Cardinals and bishops will kill him in a month (3/28/2013 4:38:00 AM)

Yeah, if they sell off some gold and put it to good use, I'd have more respect for their vows.

No.... When he was Cardinal Archbishop he declined the multi-million dollar mansion for a small one room flat in Buenos Aires and got rid of the car services and took public transportation.... usually a bus. He also cooked and cleaned himself.

He too a vow of poverty, he's a Jesuit, that means he does not own anything.

Wrong.

Just like Cardinal Richelieu, who owned Louis the thirteenth, and France?

Hillwilliam -> RE: A pope practicing Humility? The Cardinals and bishops will kill him in a month (3/28/2013 6:19:01 AM)

Maybe he is one who actually takes his vow of poverty seriously.
My only problem is his habit of ignoring security precautions. I'm afraid that his tenure may be short if he doesn't realize there are some crazies out there. Some might say he is demonstrating his 'faith' by putting himself in potentially hazardous situations and God will protect him.
Snake handlers die in Kentucky every year saying the same thing.

jlf1961 -> RE: A pope practicing Humility? The Cardinals and bishops will kill him in a month (3/28/2013 6:51:34 AM)

The Catholic church handles 1/4 of the world's health care with 117,000 health care facilities, including hospitals, clinics, orphanages.

For those without insurance these facilities have a sliding scale for payments, according to income.

Add to that the community services operations they are putting out a large percentage of the church's annual income from donations and collections during masses.

Since I took out my mortgage on the home I am buying, I have on 3 occasions gone to the church for help on the mortgage payments, and the church covered the full payment, even though I was only needing help for part of it.

MorningStar01 -> RE: A pope practicing Humility? The Cardinals and bishops will kill him in a month (3/28/2013 6:52:47 AM)

In response to the first initial post...No change there then...the Catholic Church is just one long history of murder, persecution (especialy of women) and the rape of young boys. It's a bit like saying the sky is blue. It is the most evil institution in the world...methinks the Pope is the ambassador of the the devil. All popes are essentially the Anti-Christ. And boy is it a good disguise.

He is a Jesuit. The Jesuits, I believe, own things in common but don't really have personal possessions. It isn't a vow of poverty, per se.

There are also diocesan priests, and they don't take vows of poverty either, but they tend to keep personal possessions to a minimum because they can be moved to a new parish at any time.

You all talk about the Popes "Good intentions" and we all know what that paves the way to....where the Catholic Church was spawned....Hell !!
