I would appreciate drawing on the expierience of the wise if I may? My Mistress collared me on 1/22/06 and I had never worn one before. The problem is : Everytime I have worn the collar my neck began swelling around the Collar and My Mistress became so concerned that She removed it to my own disappointment though understandable. The Collar is a chrome metal one. Is this one of those things that will go away as I get used to wearing a collar or is it one of those things that just physically can't be. Has anyone had a similar expierience? Any Suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank YOU in advance for YOUR time and wisdom

I would probably move this over to the health thread. Anyway, possibly a metal allergy. Try coating the collar in clear nail polish, letting it thoroughly dry and wearing it again.

Sounds like an allergy to me, as well. I would try a leather collar, or a collar made out of some other material.

I had the same problem with wearing a watch with a metal band or just the metal backing of the watch - I would get a terrible rash. I agree with others - probably an allergic reaction.

I'd actually avoid the nailpolish if you have sensitive skin. I used it to coat the lock on my old collar and it irritated my skin worse. What I found worked well, though, was spray-on polyurethane coating. I painted the lock, then sprayed a heavy layer of that over it. I have to re-do it every three months or so, but no irritation.

Sounds like a heavy metal contact allergy. Do not wear that collar again. Get another one that is safe.

Definately that is an allergy, I have the same reaction whenever I wear anything made out of gold, had to have my wedding ring cut from my finger because I didn't know I was allergic to gold when I was married, talk about a fun honeymoon.

Have your Mistress look at this site they make beautiful collars and you may have to have it made with leather at the back so the metal is not in contact with your skin. www.bondagecollars.com

I have an alergy to gold.. Ilove looking at it, but I can't wear it for more then a couple of hours, I get a rash and sometimes swelling. I can however wear white gold. Silver has always been my favorite metal through so I'm ok going without the gold. I'd suggest you get a new collar, I know it's sad when things like this happen, but better to wear a new collar then not wear one at all. good luck ~dancer

My girl suffers from an allergy to any metal. I wove a collar from cotton line much like the rope/knot work an old sailor would do. There is a Turks Knot(monkey fist) on one end and an eye braided into the other so that it can be secured. Since it is cotton, I'm told it can also be washed in the washing machine if need be. The collar is an expression of your owner's commitment to you. It is up to them to find a way to express the form in which they chose to collar you. After all, it is their collar. I'm told by Phoenix that since I took the time to craft the collar she wears with my own hands, that it means much more to her than any store bought collar. Good luck and think creative. I am allergic to anything that is not real. The saying "Diamonds is a girls best friend" rings true for me. I have to wear sterling silver or pure gold. Which sterling silver is what Master got me for the collar. I cannot wear anything that smothers my skin really. It has to breath. so some kind of choker doesn't work for me either. It has to be loose. Leather Wwe did not even try because of that fact. So hopefully I might have helped a little. Good luck to you, I know it is frustrating. rose442

Nickle is an allergy that is very common, that almost nobody ever hears of. In fact the Euro has such a high nickle content that it has been known to cause skin problems with those who handle change for a living. Sterling is an alloy of copper, and silver and copper seem to have very low reaction rates. Almost forgot the reason I posted this. What most people never think of is that stainless steel is stainless because of it's high nickle content. The matte finish you see on food service items like beer kegs is from a process that acid washes the iron out of the surface leaving nearly pure nickle, which of course does not react with most food items, and will not rust in any enviroment.

Are you referring to passivation? Passivation removes free-iron contamination from the SS surface without affecting it's ability to create it's protective oxide layer. It doesn't strip all the iron away leaving pure nickel. If you were referring to some other process, I would be interested in hearing about it. ~stef

A collar is in the mind, the one you wear is just the outward symbol. You could wear solid gold, a single strand of cotton, or nothing, it doesn't matter. You and your Master/Mistress know if you're collared, and that's what counts. Find something you're both happy with that doesn't set off the allergy. And check the restraints and toys in case there's anything else that'll cause problems. I'm another one with a nickel allergy - I have to have pure silver or gold. sigh How sad for me - forced to have the more expensive jewellery.

I agree it sounds like an alergic reaction to something in the collar. Contrary to the comments made about Stainless Steel, I haven't heard of too many people alergic to it and as Stef mentioned, the composition is different between grades of stainless, such as 300 series vs 400 series. I would just defer the problem back to your Mistress and let her decide what to try next. Perhaps try a ring or bracelet of the intended material and if it doesn't create a problem, it may be a more economical way to "test" different metals until you find a suitable one. Good luck.

Hi desertdancer, Respectfully, I'd suggest that you don't actually have an allergy to gold, but rather the nickel content of the particular gold items/jewellery you have been wearing in the past. The key issue is that you mentioned that you could wear "white gold" without problem. "White gold" is simply gold with a different mix of alloying metals, and is subject to the same carat scale as other gold alloy products (percentage of gold in 24 parts). 18 carat American white gold is typically 75% gold, 14.5% nickel, 5.5% copper and 5% zinc. 18 carat European white gold is typically 75% gold, 17% palladium, 4% copper and 4% silver. (This said, there are various other alloy ratios for white gold, including manganese, chromium, iron, silver, zinc, cobolt and copper.) Palladium is considerably more expensive than other gold whitening agents, but is generally considered to be hypoallergenic, much as platinum is (as platinum and palladium form part of the same element family in the Periodic Table). "European white gold" is nickel free (or contains extremely small proportions of nickel) because of European Community Regulations (the EC Nickel Directive) brought about because of nickel's dematological and carcinogenic properties. If you are buying jewellery from a reputable jewellers, you should be able to get metallurgical data on the jewellery you are prospectively purchasing. And if buying ear-rings, get assurance that the ear bar is not of an inferior or different alloy than the stud. Hope this helps.
