ORIGINAL: Esinn Ummm? A WSI instructor told you to let someone drown? You should punch yourself in the balls or pus' for repeating that - especially if you agree. And give us their name. The fact you, if you agree... Or your instructor is incompetent is not justification to let someone die. I get it... Rather than go for actual training. It is easier to be weak and impotent and pretend you did all you could. Anyway, however you scrape the web keywords: SAR, panicky, ATG (Afloat Training Group), Escape & Evasion training...... http://www.navy.mil/view_image_list.asp?id=27&page=67 You do what you do... "So others can live". I was a WSI as well. Yes, they do teach you that. You are taught to survive first and rescue someone else second. Face it. If you're dead or incapacitated, you're not going to do much good rescuing a victim anyway. A lot of lifeguards are HS kids, not professional soldiers or first responders. Minmum wage doesn't pay you to die One of my instructors was a big nasty SOB who was about 6'5. I'm 5'7 on a good day but he didn't know my wrestling background. When he decided to make my life tough in the water on the final exam, I hurt him pretty badly. Unfortunately, most lifegurds aren't exactly physical specimens. I think thats why he decided to make an 'example' out of me to scare the others. It didnt work though.
