Beard hair becomes almost soft beyond a certain length, and even at a relatively short length, loses its abrasive qualities.

Do you get your hub to exfoliate your face with his chin-fluff, Ishtar? I could see a woman with highly-cultured and naturally-inclined aesthetic sensibilities, such as yourself, happily incorporating her partner's gently-abrasive tonsorial qualities into her daily beauty regime. And why not?

I can relate to that, actually.

Beards are also advised, apparently, for men who don't have lips or smiles that they like. I don't like my own lips or smiles. I'll probably give a beard a try again, some time. So long as it doesn't come out ginger - always a problem with blondies such as myself. And so long as I don't get two distinct tufts on my chin - I have a cleft chin, and that's common in men with chins like mine. It can end up looking like two miniature hairy buttocks.

WHAT?????

You think you have a bad smile????????

I have a beard (although it's really more of a chin strap), and I've had it since my second year of undergrad...over 5 years now. It actually started as part of a No-Shave November (shutup, I was in college).

I keep it clean and trimmed, so it's really not that scratchy. And I've never had anybody react negatively to it. Apparently it just works for me.

Yes. The last time I tried smiling (in the mirror, on 13th March 2010), I fecken hated it.

If a copper were to see me smiling, he'd arrest me, and I wouldn't blame him.

Gently-abrasive? What man's cheek with stubble would qualify as "gently" abrasive??? Sandpaper is what it is.

That stuff is rough enough to take the skin off your bones if you let a guy rough house long enough.

No, I absolutely do not incorporate that in my exfoliation routine, I'd like to keep some of my skin attached to me, thank you very much.

It depends on the facial hair, how unkempt it is, where it is, etc.....

When I see a man with a full, bushy beard, I think either lumberjack or starving artist.

I'm personally not a fan of facial hair.

Now Master grew a bit of a goatee a few months ago and I kinda liked it but if it grew out and longer I don't think I would have liked it at all.

And when I see a mustache I think of a man who's stuck in the 70's lol.

This is essentially the facial hair pattern that inspired this thread.... except the beard was longer and shaggier.

He looks exactly like my brother in that picture. My brother has a beard exactly like that with the white coming in, the long triangle type shape, a bit unkempt, etc....My brother is retired now and just doesn't bother shaving anymore.

Personally I think Brad Pitt looks completely disgusting with the beard. I wish he'd shave it off.

My beard is the only new years resolution I've ever kept. Jan 1, 1982. I cut my chin badly while shaving (AGAIN). (Scar from an old bicycle wreck). My resolution was to never again cut my chin shaving.
My upper lip hasn't seen daylight snce '79.

No woman, ever, has been into men with goatees. I've no idea why men sometimes grow these. It baffles me. The worst of all tonsorial moves, if you ask me.

i adore goatees on a man. especially if it's got silver in it.

do you have a goatee, peon?

i really don't like beards and have never seen a guy where i haven't thought 'shave that thing off of your face'. i like stubble, but not the manacured crap, just when he hasn't shaved for a day or two. i maybe a minority in this but i like the abrasiveness of it....especially during oral.

but the thought of a beard near me is ikkie. brad pitt up there is a classic example of what i'm talking about. not only is it uneven in its growth, but it looks mucky as well as the fact that he just looks a twat.

i also have a thing about watching a guy shave. not in a sexual way as it started by watching my grandad using a proper brush and soap. i liked that he seemed to do it in a ritualistic way, and my playmate does it the same way.

Wow... my inner thighs are so sensitive to touch I already don't like if they get touched with rough callused hands, stubble is so totally out of the question.
If a guy has got stubble, the already slim chance that I'd be ok with oral completely evaporates into nothing.

"Does having a lot of facial hair say something about a man?"

Some of my friends and co-workers have experimented with beards, it's clearly a personal thing. I believe it often signifies a choice to portray oneself as rejecting certain social judgements, in particular those that value youth or being a slave to fashion, and rather presenting an image of independent thought based on settled principles. It is a way of claiming maturity. In my case it felt natural to grow a beard when I had two grandchildren and my father passed, as a way of claiming a very comfortable family role which was frankly patriarchal. It was also a time when my work responsibilities started to include technical seminars for young engineers, so an older-wiser persona helped with credibility.

At this point in life, it is also a way of compensating for a decided lack of coverage on top, to maintain a sign of strength or masculinity. I'm not sure that works from behind, but it looks good when facing directly into the mirror

Length may be a key here... The OP's question was about "a lot" of facial hair. The trimmed goatee was pretty clearly a youth style and so a different image. Longer, as say a Santa Claus length length, implies a hermit in the woods, or Red Green and a roll of duct tape.

Just my opinions here, worth about what you have paid for them.

Was it a Friday ?

As for beards, they spoil the cut of a suit. I think they are more for the geography teacher types at my old school. A kind of cheap sports jacket and roll neck jumper, with a pipe and a copy of the Morning Star tucked neatly under the arm.

And that was just the women !

Granted, I'm biased (look at the profile pic) but a beard says nothing more than a man wants to wear one. I had a mustache when I served in the Air Force and grew out my beard completely shortly before my daughter was born. The chief reason I shaved the beard was that my little punkin quickly discovered that the quickest way to get a bottle was to grab my beard and yank. I've had the goatee now for 10 or 15 years. Yes, I'm aware that it makes me look like the Master from classic Doctor Who. Oh, well.

My father has had a beard since he got out of high school. Not long by any means and kept very neat. He usually keeps his hair the same length as the beard too. It's completely gray now. He mentioned shaving it off when I was younger, and my mom, sister, and I all flipped out just at the mention of it. I always thought it made him look sweetly handsome.

My initial reactions to beards...
An unkempt beard = an unkempt person.
A well-groomed beard = well-groomed person.

Love a well kept goatee. When I meet Brad he had a smooth baby face shave, I asked him to grow a goatee and he did....Loved it and so did he.

oh yeah. I love watching a man shave.
I am not a beard fan though when I was a child I did fall in love with the Captain from the Ghost and Mrs Muir. That close trimmed beard was sooooo.. masculine. Later when my sister married a sailor when I was 10, I loved him because his beard looked like that.
It is rare to see such a beautiful beard on men. lol mostly I notice they look scraggly, unkempt, or (shudders) yellowed. Yuck.
IDK.. maybe they wear facial hair to make them look older when they are young and then just keep it?
My ex shaved his moustache off a few years back and it made him look 10 yrs younger. People kept commenting on it.
