This might be fun.

Does someone's knowledge/experience with weapons change their slant on gun control?

FunCouple5280 -> RE: Gun Control Poll (4/11/2013 2:41:50 PM)

You don't have enough options for being against gun control.. YOu have to add at least I have no experience and Am against gun control.....

DomKen -> RE: Gun Control Poll (4/11/2013 2:48:28 PM)

I've owned and used guns for most of my life and I'm for gun control. I've never needed an extended magazine to hunt deer or shoot at targets. I've never needed to evade background checks. I've always owned firearms pupose made for civilian uses so I've got no problem with banning civilian models of military weapons.

JeffBC -> RE: Gun Control Poll (4/11/2013 2:54:24 PM)

what about.... "I've had very limited (near none) exposure to guns and I'm against gun control?"

DaddySatyr -> RE: Gun Control Poll (4/11/2013 2:58:17 PM)

I added one (which seemed to be, essentially, what you both wanted?)

FunCouple5280 -> RE: Gun Control Poll (4/11/2013 3:08:25 PM)

Thanks...

I voted against gun control as it is defined in society today. I am against any limit on ownership as to the type or number or irrelevant hoops to get one (like a waiting period etc.). However, I believe in background checks, as well as training and safety. So in that regard, I am for gun control.

thanks... although now I'm confused why both FunCouple and myself say they voted for it but I'm only showing one vote.

And I agree with what FunCouple said. I could theoretically be in favor of some controls on guns but the crap I read in the newspapers seems like it would solve nothing and add a whole ton of govt tracking that I don't want.

freedomdwarf1 -> RE: Gun Control Poll (4/11/2013 3:28:00 PM)

FR~

There are the two extremes missing from the poll -

Experience/exposure is irrelevant, I am for a complete ban on guns (not just control).

-and-

Experience/exposure is irrelevant, I am for no control and no restrictions of any kind whatsoever (remove what we already have).

[:)]

DaddySatyr -> RE: Gun Control Poll (4/11/2013 3:31:24 PM)

I was trying to keep extremists at bay. I doubt that there many people that would hold those extreme positions. Plus; I am trying to see if experience/exposure is "causual" and I think the results of the poll itself will indicate if there is relevency.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

I agree that no limits is unlikely. That's where we get into WMD type discussions. I'd be willing to have that discussion but judging from these boards I'd say it's ot productive.

The poll will show you if there is a statistical correlation (which is almost a given in my mind). It won't show causality. For instance, how I would have looked at this before Bush and Obama is something like:

Guns are dangerous.
I don't feel the need to own a gun
Other people shouldn't either
Ergo... we should control them (not ban them)

Back then I was also hopelessly unaware of the spin campaigns. For instance, I'd thought that "assault rifle" actually sort of meant something. Back then I also didn't have such a deep seated mistrust of our government. What changes things for me is the idea that I have no choice but to live in the wild wild west because our govt has abdicated.

PeonForHer -> RE: Gun Control Poll (4/11/2013 3:53:54 PM)

My father was a qualified marksman in the police in London. He hates guns and would never change UK gun control laws. Hope that fits with the hypothesis, whatever it is. ;-)

For what it's worth, I'd never even heard of 'assault rifles' outside of American discussions. Until a few years ago I'd heard only of guns and machine guns. An Irish friend, now living in Canada, explained 'semi-automatics' to me. Those were my only three categories. I suspect I speak for most Brits on this.

jlf1961 -> RE: Gun Control Poll (4/11/2013 3:59:16 PM)

My choice is not there, I am for more comprehensive back ground checks, better safe guards against mentally unstable people getting guns, but that is it.

You mean semi automatic civilian models that *look like* military weapons.

So this is an Americans only thread, then?

Really? I'm seriously curious. How common would a stance of "No privately held firearms of any configuration for any reason" be? I would've thought that such an absolute wouldn't really work out well anywhere. And where would that stop? Does that include pellet guns? bb guns? suction cup dart guns? handheld crossbow pistols? I dunno, it seems pretty unworkable as absolutes usually are. Am I missing something?

I'm hazy on the laws regarding bb guns, dart guns and crossbows, admittedly, Jeff. I haven't tried to buy any of those since I was a schoolboy. But, yes, we do pretty much have a no-firearms policy here in the UK and most people are absolutely fine with it. However, Rule and/or others will no doubt be along ASAP to demonstrate that this only works because all Brits are happy to be slaves.

Yes the liberals are punk=bitches over aesethic features like pistol grips, button hole stocks, flash suppressors, barrel shrouds, heat shields, and can accept a detachable mag that holds over ten rounds. It's not about gun control, it's about destroying liberties, it's not about saving lives, it's about empowering a centralized government.

JeffBC -> RE: Gun Control Poll (4/11/2013 6:51:04 PM)

I am clearly missing something HUGE here...

http://www.sportsmanguncentre.co.uk/

So apparently someone is selling firearms for hunting purposes in the UK.

Per another site there are two certificates and two permits (for visitors) that one can obtain. I would find it utterly astonishing to know that there was no gun hunting in the UK

Wikipedia has an entire section on "shooting sports" which sort of implies something to shoot with.

TricklessMagic -> RE: Gun Control Poll (4/11/2013 6:58:21 PM)

If you ever have an honest interest in firearm ownership in England pop over to thehighroad. There are tons of English posters that share their experiences of firearm ownership. It's really kind of sad that English people can't be trusted to own the kinds of firearms we have in America. Yeah they can own some of them like bolt-action and lever action rifles, some shotguns, no semi-automatic rifles that aren't .22lr caliber. But for some reason English people are just so dangerous and evil they can't own handguns or have concealed carry for some reason only their government seems to know. It's just strange. I guess so many Europeans (except for Czechs, Swiss, Finland, Germans, Sweden, Italy) are just deranged mass-murderers in waiting who if they got their hands on the same rights and guns we have here in America, they'd jsut go crazy murdering people left and right.
