You mean the one where you`re so worried that the attackers are of your ilk, that you think we are too?

From reading the news reports through the day, this was the kind of bomb you can buy all the parts components for in a morning of shopping. Maybe even with a single trip to a good department store. Black powder and projectiles, packed into a pressure cooker, with a kitchen timer.

Al Qaeda has posted the instructions on their "Inspire" site, but you don't have to share an ideology, to read a website.

All the other unexploded devices are now being denied by the authorities. Two were planted, two went off. The chances seem very good that somewhere in all the images that were captured that afternoon, the perpetrator was photographed.

Anybody know off hand if MA has the death penalty on the books?

Meh....small, compared to a-q attacks.

Black powder?.......that sounds like gun nutters/right winger types....

Speaking of the gunneria....if this had been done with AR-15s your republican president, wayne lapierre....would be calling for even more guns......

If the perp was smart, he would not be anywhere near the area, but tens of miles away.

If the perp wanted to witness the mayhem, he would be watching somewhere halfway both bombs, most likely on the other side of the street.

So he planted the devices by telekinesis, Rule? Pictures were being taken constantly, both by professionals and who knows how many private individuals, for hours before the detonations.

[.....T]he very purpose of this thread was to set aside a space for other purposes than the conventional need for grieving and such, since it was inevitable that some would want to process theirs in a different manner (or would want to discuss), ideally allowing the other thread(s) to be reserved for what you called for here. I propose it's better to have one thread, clearly labelled, for the alternative ways of dealing with what has happened, and one or more for the conventional ways. If I'd thought of it sooner, we might've avoided a lot of needless aggravation in the other thread. Please allow us to process this in our own way.

Fair enough Aswad. Mea culpa. Some time after the post was submitted, I realised it would have been better to post it to the other thread, but by then it was too late to change things.

Thinking about it, it was a forlorn aspiration to hope that people might refrain from speculating and finger pointing immediately after a horror like this. One can only hope that there are reasonable grounds for whatever claims people choose to make.

In his customary incisive style, Glenn Greenwald has a piece in the Guardian analysing some of the media's reaction to the carnage in Boston. I can only urge people to read it - it is so worth the time and trouble. Anything Greenwald has to say on the subject of terrorism and related topics is essential reading for those who want to be well informed

MA is not a death penalty state. I believe there
was an effort to reinstate it a few years ago but it failed.

Then, when they catch the perp(s) try em in federal court.

Speculating is a natural response, and not the same as pointing fingers (although some did point fingers, which is a quite normal reaction and hopefully just part of venting). I think it's reasonable to speculate (but unreasonable to conclude with certainty at this point) about any such event. You'll no doubt recall I speculated on the 7/22 attacks, too, and pretty much correctly at that. People were thinking jihadists back then, as well, which proved false. I suspect it will again.

I'm very glad that people do their speculating in public, such as on CM, because it allows others to address what is said. It has been my experience that this leads to less rampant prejudices and such in the long run. In fact, if our own attacker had participated on this very forum, voicing his complaints, then he might well not have concluded that his attacks were (to him) justified. Such is the nature of debate. It allows us to form more balanced and well informed opinions when we have others to question the merits of our position.

Silence has none of these properties.

IWYW,
— Aswad.

Would this not be a Federal case first? I don't think MA's laws will take precedence.

PS I just got pushed an update that a suspect has been identified...but without details

http://www.cnn.com/2013/04/17/us/boston-blasts/index.html?hpt=hp_t1
Investigators believe they have identified a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings, a source who has been briefed on the investigation told CNN's John King exclusively.
The breakthrough came from analysis of video from a department store near the site of the second explosion. Video from a Boston television station also contributed to the progress, said the source, who declined to be more specific but called it a significant development.
Earlier, a federal law enforcement source with firsthand knowledge of the investigation told CNN that a lid to a pressure cooker thought to have been used in the bombings had been found on a roof of a building near the scene.

however...this could just be a NYP moment ...so im waiting further news

kdsub -> RE: The Insensitive Boston Thread (4/17/2013 10:25:15 AM)

Not a problem...we seem to do this occasionally. Just keep in mind I am always straight forward, direct, and harbor no hidden agenda...what I say is what I mean.

90+% of your so-called gun nutter/Right wingers have never even seen black powder, much less used it.

Nice try creating a non-existent strawboogeyman though.

(I'm patenting that term folks so fuckin hands off)[8D]

Reloading isn't done with black powder. I've done a few thousand myself.

kdsub -> RE: The Insensitive Boston Thread (4/17/2013 10:43:25 AM)

But would not gunpowder confined in a pressure cooker explode? And it is easily purchased.

Probably not relevant as any trials over an act of terrorism like this would be tried on the federal level.

It would but the whole conversation has been about "Black Powder". That is probably due to the amount of smoke that accompanied the blasts (that last sentence is pure speculation OK and I'll freely admit it). Modern propellants have long been called 'smokeless powder'. They aren't truly smokeless but they produce very little so a bomb using them would create a lot less than 'black powder' would.
I'll go out on a limb and say that 90% of your so-called 'gun nuts' don't reload and have therefore never even bought or seen modern propellants either.

~fast reply~
How interesting. So I just heard **something** today. I'll say this. If it turn out in the next week or so to be a domestic, 20 something, disgruntled pro-gun guy I won't be surprised. Then again, if that turns out to be incorrect I won't be that surprised also. Take that for what it's worth (which in my opinion is "not much" other than interesting).
