I am trying to help my great nephew develop a taste in good rock and roll music.

To that end, I need some help. So for all those with a healthy love of great rock and roll, I would like a list of your favorite 80's rock bands and songs.

Also I need to know the name of the song from the 80's where a man comes out of a lipstick in the video?

I already have a play list of 21 songs on you tube, he really enjoys videos. And I have gotten him away from wanting to watch the Gungham style video every five minutes.

Who gives a shit about some songwriter/singer who wore lipstick (or arose out of same)? The fact is, your great nephew needs to be brought in to the entire rapture which is....60's to (early) 80's music.

No explanation is needed....just ear buds.

And a full battery charge.

Here's on from the late 80's. Love the song. Funny video ♫♪♫

I thought about it, and a pretty good intro to (real good) '80s music is the Heavy Metal soundtrack album. It has a good cross-sampling of the bands of that ear. And Tarna on the cover. That too....

And Taarna, don't forget. The final vignette that leads off with "Mob Rules" is still one of my favorites.

I had to edit this, 'cause I forgot how to spell her name.

1. "Heavy Metal" (Original Version) Sammy Hagar 3:50
2. "Heartbeat" Riggs 4:20
3. "Working in the Coal Mine" Devo 2:48
4. "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" Blue Öyster Cult 4:48
5. "Reach Out" Cheap Trick 3:35
6. "Heavy Metal (Takin' a Ride)" Don Felder 5:00
7. "True Companion" Donald Fagen 5:02
8. "Crazy (A Suitable Case for Treatment)" Nazareth 3:24
9. "Radar Rider" Riggs 2:40
10. "Open Arms" Journey 3:20
11. "Queen Bee" Grand Funk Railroad 3:11
12. "I Must Be Dreamin'" Cheap Trick 5:37
13. "The Mob Rules" (alternate version) Black Sabbath 2:43
14. "All of You" Don Felder 4:18
15. "Prefabricated" Trust 2:59
16. "Blue Lamp" Stevie Nicks 3:48

At his age Jeff, some of the lyrics will be frightening. Do you really want to explain the meaning behind I Shot the Sheriff? Because I don't think it's appropriate. Try Raffi, best all time kid musician I know of.

I shot the sheriff was from the 70's.

We were given two Raffi cd's when Damian was born. He absolutely hated them. He fussed, cried, and when he was old enough to crawl, he left the room.

he likes the following:

Foghat Slow ride
The Cars,
ZZ top
Van Halen
Robert Palmer... any of his videos with the girls standing behind him.
Gummi bears version of Gungham style
Gummi Bears
Jesse J
Sting
The police.
Queen
Five little monkeys jumping on the bed
Kermit's Its not easy being green
Bruce Springsteen
John Mellancamp
Tom Petty
Deep Purple
Dire straits
Kiss
J Geils Band

Don't have any 80's choices, none of which, by the way (in my opinion) could possibly assist in your quest to help your great nephew.

I would suggest anything from:

(Of course) The Beatles (EVERY song)
Who
Floyd
Beach Boys (training wheels)
Deep Purple (gotta have all the above before we go here)
Arrowsmith (then...and then now...more so now)
Zappa of course....and that's just for a nice rather intriguing detour
Doors (that's a given)
Janice
Jefferson Airplane
Jefferson Starship
Salt in a little early Elton for fun

That should be a good enough start to get him thinking in the right direction.

Wonderful stuff listed in here, but if he's younger, maybe get him something simple to access, and let him grow and mature on his own. My two cents would be to get him the full recordings of the original albums:

Kiss: Alive II
Ozzy: Diary of a Madman
Black Sabbath: Paranoid
AC/DC: Back in Black
Motley Crue: Shout at the Devil
Metallica: Black Album
Styx: Paradise Theater

A little bit later, add:

Pink Floyd: A Collection of Great Dance Songs
Boston: Boston

Also, install a single of Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2 on every player he gets to use

(I know. There is a lot of older stuff in there. A lot of the great music of the 80's, was 70's stuff that we suddenly had the technology to carry around with us.

I think that might almost be my list if I could only 10 albums (are they even called that anymore) on a desert island. Number 10 would be Melissa Ethridge's Greatest Hits.
