Flying is a privilege, not a right. The pilot made a decision to put safety first and I can't say I blame him. Airlines take any implication of a bomb very seriously.

warning - mean horrible insensitive non touchy feely response coming:

I really feel for this poor man.

On the other hand...what the heck was an airline in an environment where other passengers are there and where bombings are such a triggering topic and have been a reality supposed to do? I'm sorry, and I feel for him, but this is not a case of an airline being discriminatory IMO. It's just one of those unfortunate things.

I am not unsympathetic to the young man's plight. A close friend has Tourette's (even wrote a book about it) and I know what my friend has been through. That said, for as important of a trip as this was to these two men it seems like a bit more pre - production beyond having "medical documentation" might have been in order. Engaging airline management prior to arriving at the airport may have averted this problem for them. I cannot fault the pilot in this matter.

WTF...

Just give the guy a patdown and stick him on the plane with an apology for the inconvenience.

"Culture of fear" seems an incredibly apt description right about now.

ummmm.. According to the video of the news report he tried to explain and he did apparently have medical documentation.. he was allowed thru by TSA and its usually them that will be the problem.. The airline turned around and have offered him & his friend 2 round trip tickets (but strangely enough, they have said no guarantee he would be able to fly that time either ).. So imo he did all he could and was as prepared as he could be..

No, he didn't. You contact the airline and the airport (or have someone else do it for you), and you explain to them the situation, that you have medical documentation and that you are aware that the more you try to control things and NOT to do things, the more likely they will occur. You ask the airport and the airline how you can work together to make things less stressful for everyone involved.

The young man states how he had an inkling it would happen. He has a medical issue, sure. However, his medical issue doesn't give him the right to make others uncomfortable. This isn't the type of disability that you can tell people to look away from like a physical deformity. People shouldn't have to spend several hours on an airplane with someone who can't refrain from saying "bomb" every few seconds or minutes.

Many people are stressed over flying as it is. As much as I may sympathize with the man, his behavior could have added to that stress for other passengers. Fear of flying didnt start with 9/11

Why didn't he just tape his mouth shut, or use some sort of mouth piece that prevented him from talking? Doesn't seem too hard...

That would have increased his stress.

Exactly. Sometimes people seem to think that just because something is a disability, that others need to accept whatever aspects of it there are. I understand that he can't help it, but I wouldn't want this guy in the same movie theater as me either. There are plenty of places where his disability means he needs to be considerate of others not just the other way around.

That would have increased his stress.

Maybe, but at least he'd have been amusing the other passengers, rather than frightening or annoying them.

I would have thought the main concern is that he not panic the other passengers to the point where it becomes a safety issue. But, hell, aren't there private places on planes? There must be some way of sorting something out.

I wouldn't have let him fly either. Get him some anxyolitic, or tell him to go to places he can drive to, in his own car. How is letting a young man speaking up about bomb in an airplane okay? I'm not massively afraid of flying, because I'm not massively afraid of dying (as long as it is painless). However, the very last thing I would need, is to think about a bombing, and crashing into the ocean for however many hours/minutes I fly, so that we can accomodate 1 person with Tourettes. M

The story is misleading. They briefly mention once very early in the video that he notified the airline ahead of time but then fall back on the medical documentation thing. Even the brainless talking heads on GMA sit there and lamented how "he did everything he could". He didn't. I have found airlines on the whole to be very flexible and accommodating when dealing with these types of issues but - and here's the catch - you have to give them an opportunity to do so. Showing up at the gate with a piece of paper does not qualify. I have much sympathy for the young man concerning his condition but little regarding his missed flight. You plan this trip for two years and you can't contact the airline a week ahead of time? Sorry.

They can't lock him in the toilets because they stow stuff in there when landing and taking off, and they certainly can't put him in the cockpit, can they?
I also suspect that he sounds like exactly the sort of whiney little professional victim who'd be running after a solicitor to sue them if they put him in the cargo hold with the luggage, so no: if he can't sit with the other passengers, in the passenger section, there's nowhere else in the plane they can put him.
