You can do it, TST! I'm cheering for you!

I've never been a smoker, but if I had to quit sucking my thumb cold turkey I'd probably tear out my hair. Yes, you read that right. I still suck my thumb at age 54.

Hmmm, try that instead of a cigarette (bonus: it makes your tongue really strong, costs nothing, won't make you fat, doesn't cause cancer and is always with you!)

Thank you!

While I'm sure my husband may enjoy the side-effects of thumb-sucking, I'll have to pass on that one! I sucked my thumb as a child and reluctantly gave it up due to major pressure and humiliation from a baby-sitter of mine.
As for you still doing it at 54, I think it's sweet! I've known several adults that still sleep with their childhood animals or blankies and yes, one still sucks her thumb too!

.....The third day was the worst. I royally blew up at my husband for no good reason, to which he replied by a kiss on the forehead, a hug, and 'I love you' as he walked out the door for work. That definitely made day 4 a little better.
I also forewarned my kiddos and they have been really supportive as well, helping me around the house and things. They've been wanting me to quit for a long time.

It's getting a little easier, I think. I definitely could not do this without all the wonderful support.

theshytype,

Just a quick note to let you know that we are still here pulling for you.

Thanks for the nice story about your family's support.  Whenever you are tempted
remember that they are the best possible reason you could have for beating this addiction.

I've been finding that the e-cig has helped me not reach for a cigarette now that the weather is nice and I'm outside more (the only place I can smoke). Here in Canada the e-cigs containing nicotein are a banned substance, so the one I have has no nicotein in it at all.

I'm pulling for ya. And reading all of the support here has helped me stay strong too.

Nicotine is banned in Canada?

Not nicotine itself. Just the juices in the electronic cigarettes that contain nicotine. Health Canada has decided that since nicotine is a controlled substance (you can get the gums and patches over the counter at a pharmacy, but not at the corner store), and they haven't done the research into the e-cigs themselves, they aren't going to allow it up here. From what I've read on the e-cig forums, there are many people up here that order the juices from the states, and usually don't have a problem, but it can (and has for some) been seized at the border.

So, while I can get an e-cig, there will be no nicotine in it at all. Only the vegetable glycerine, water, and artificial flavourings (as I read the label on the one in front of me).

theshytype,

It is about time for another positive report from you about how
you are still going strong.  Or how you are going to get back on
the wagon.

I am sure I am not the only one still pulling for you about this.

It has been a few days, hasn't it? Maybe out of guilt. A few rough days gave way to a few more cheats, but still going. I know I'm making it harder on myself by doing it. I think I'm going to get the e-cig. I received some good additional information on the other side but need to do a little more research. I just really, really don't want to replace nicotine with nicotine so I'll just have to find the right one for the right price!

Thank you for checking up on me!

It has been ten days. You should be able to feel the difference in ...how much you cough.

And the $50 bucks.

I suppose a nice long walk might feel different too.

DO it!

Has it been ten days?  Wow. Seems like just a few days ago!

It's not so much the breathing that has improved - I do high cardio daily so my breathing has been pretty darn good for a smoker.  Ok, maybe it has gotten a little better.

It's the nasty, oh-so-unattractive phlegm that I have noticed a huge improvement on!  (why anyone thought to sell smoking as being sexy is beyond me)

The cough had improved, unless I have a cheat in which case it kills my throat and I cough for about an hour afterwards.

I'm waiting for the weekend to hurry up and get here so I can get an e-cig. I'd prefer to not take the kiddos while shopping for e-cigs.  I suspect I'll be there a while reading all the labels and doing much comparison.

At the beginning, I did not want to replace nicotine with nicotine, but I've become desperate and don't want to abandon the progress I have made.  I'm still doing good and my desire to quit has never wavered but cigarettes are always around me, taunting me.

I know the patch will not help - the act of smoking has very much been an important part to my addiction.

Brava and all the best!

As my signature says, think how far up the hill you've come! You and (especially) your kids are worth continuing the climb.

Hi Again,

I saw you posted in the purse thread.  Think how much lighter
and healthier yours is now that you are not carrying around
cigarettes and a lighter.  You aren't, are you?

Because you know we are still here pulling for you.

That made me laugh, thank you!

I know one thing, I don't have to worry about misplacing my lighter. Which, by the way, I found three buried in the bottom of my purse (apparently I was hoarding them for emergencies?) so I suppose there is a bit of a weight difference!

I did wind up getting the blu e-cig. It tastes like crap, but hey, not much different than the real ones!
I only take a puff or two a few times during the day. Between the taste and the awkwardness, I don't need anymore than that.
