theshytype -> I'm quitting, finally (4/29/2013 8:13:41 PM)

I woke up this morning and decided on a whim to quit smoking. Not sure why today of all days.  Especially since the last few days have been horrid.

I have to say, with an exception to this increasing urge to seriously hurt someone, it's going pretty well.   Since any other attempt prior to this never made it past two hours, I'm taking today's progress as a good sign! That, and everyone around me has made it out alive. Of course, there's always tomorrow...

Level -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (4/29/2013 8:26:07 PM)

Do it, you'll never regret it.

GOOD for you!

I'll wager that you'll find that the support on this site is tremendous.

BTW.... when I saw the title of the thread, I thought, "Oh, good. Another flounce announcement. Just what we need." LOL

FrostedFlake -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (4/29/2013 8:42:46 PM)

Yay!

Here are two thoughts.

#1/ Every time you get the urge to reach for a smoke, repeat these simple words, out loud, in as serious a tone of voice as you can muster, with emphasis on the question mark, as if you really did wonder.

"Why do I want a cigarette? I don't smoke!"

It's a lie, of course. But your subconscious will forgive you that, and just write down the message... to give to YOU, later.

"Hmmm... Doesn't smoke. Got it."

After a dozen or twenty repetitions, you will be able to feel the difference.

#2/ Don't quit. Losers quit. And quitters lose. You are neither. You are a winner. Winners retire. After long service. So, Retire from smoking.

It's just a word. What difference can it make? If that's what you really think, I'll throw it right back. It's just a word. What difference can it make? There is no reason you can point at not to try it.

Some folks put the $$$ they don't spend in a jar, as a sort of visual aid. You might. But the first two are what did it for me.

I thought the same thing. [:)]

OP, if you can be patient with the crazy feelings and urges that come up for the next 2 weeks at most, and keep on going, you will quickly be through 90% of the struggle. Someday you won't even notice the anniversary of your quit day. Good luck to you; this IS doable!

theshytype -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (4/29/2013 8:51:44 PM)

Thank you all!

Level, I don't think I'll regret it at all either. I do, however, regret having started in the first place.

Lance, I had to laugh. After posting it and rereading I thought the same!

FF, great tips! I'm going to try those. With me, it's all habit and no enjoyment. It's difficult breaking rituals but since I hate the smell, the taste, and don't smoke in the car or house, I'm thinking a little reworking the way I think will help significantly!

TheHeretic -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (4/29/2013 9:02:32 PM)

All the best!

outlier -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (4/29/2013 9:16:28 PM)

Go For It!  Use whatever it takes to get the job done.

Not only will you never regret it.  You will celebrate the
liberating change in your life.

Keep posting back so we can continue to support you.

theshytype -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (4/29/2013 9:21:43 PM)

I'm loving the support from everyone!
It will be nice to have this to revisit and be reminded.

Thank you!!!!

Determinist -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (4/30/2013 12:47:13 AM)

Best of luck to you, I quit 7 months ago using Champix (fantastic drug if it works for you) and don't miss it at all. I think you can find a ticker or an app that will give you motivation by telling you how your body is recovering the longer you haven't been smoking (e.g. 24 hours - the cilia in your airway starts to repair itself; 3 days - your sense of smell and taste improves, etc). After a week, I noticed I didn't have to clear my throat as much. After a month, I could go for a jog without wheezing and without feeling short of breath after 5 minutes. *That* was the best feeling in the world.

ARIES83 -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (4/30/2013 1:22:27 AM)

I can't remember where the thread I was posting
about this stuff is, would have been handy to link...

Anyhoo, I was also a big smoker and quit using
champix, I got hammered hard by the psychiatric
side effects, but I solidered through it... It's not
magic and it can be really tough but I would also
recommend it, it was actually an interesting
experience.

Quitting smoking is a never ending sense of
accomplishment for me, as little a thing as it is in
the scheme of things. I'm extremely proud of it.

I'm actually currently still trying to build up my
cardio to a respectable level, which I've posted
about a bit in the workout thread.

None of the personal physical achievements I've
accomplished so far would have been possible if I
still been smoking.

I wish you all the best with it.

Good for you!

I am a former smoker as well. What helped me was to completely alter my routine. For example, I liked to have a cigarette after dinner. So I made a chocolate egg cream rather than have a cigarette. It was something a little special to look forward to, there was a certain amount of preparation but not too much as to make it a nuisance, it tasted really good, and the straw kept my mouth busy.

As Aries said, quitting smoking is one of my biggest accomplishments as well. You should feel proud for taking even the first steps to getting there. Good luck!

Can I have all those cute clothes that you won't be able to fit into in six months? [:)]

Just kidding - my very best wishes on your path to becoming a non-smoker.

I love this. Yeah, I'm rooting for them too!

I have to say that I don't really have the desire for one today. Except I'm pacing. I feel as though I've had five shots of espresso. I will not be getting much work done. At all. Good news is I don't feel like hurting anyone right now.

I have tried Chantix in the past and I couldn't handle the nightmares. I vowed to myself that when I quit, it will be cold turkey. I'm not doing it entirely by myself. With the help of those around me (here included) and many packs of gum, I can do this! Oh, and the ads on tv from the CDC certainly help in a disturbing way.

I'm going to try my hardest to avoid weight gain. Some is probably inevitable, but I've added time onto my daily workouts and have added a walk at lunchtime to help reduce stress. I'm not replacing smoking with snacking. And I have just purchased a bunch of new summer clothes and I'll be damned if I can't fit into them!!!

Hillwilliam -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (4/30/2013 7:23:47 AM)

Good luck shytype.

ChatteParfaitt -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (4/30/2013 8:21:32 AM)

Nicotine is one of the most insidious addictions in existence. I quit a few years back, and offer this advice (along with the other good advice you've received):

Realize you ARE battling a full blown addiction, so do whatever you can to get through it.

Use gum, the patch, whatever to deal with your physical cravings (just wait a day or so, you'll have them).

This leaves you free to concentrate on the psychological end of the addiction. I chewed tons of gum and ate another ton of hard candy (not on my diet list). BUT it got me through.

The very best of luck to you. You have a great chance of success b/c you WANT to quit.

Us shy types can be tough when we lose it. *** Or so I'm told*** I'm innocent, and have no idea what anyone is talking about when they say that.

As to the CDC, they have been hardcore with the ads lately. Almost too much in my opinion; but if it inspires you, all the better. M

Phoenixpower -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (4/30/2013 8:58:34 AM)

Good luck and best wishes with your journey [:)]

I did not smoke, so can't rely to you on that front, but was glad when my dad quit when I was 10 years old....he kept himself encouraged with buying himself another part of his toy train (the boy in him) once a month, so sort of investing money into something he enjoyed which he would have used on cigarettes otherwise...
