Haha! Hair balls.

Yes I often kid by saying things like "did the mods throw us a toy?"....often talking about over the top morons. It usually ends up with gold letters. I assume VAA doesn't like dead things in her show. But in defense, it was a GIFT!!! Lol

I've been wondering what "troll" on this forum means. Is it somebody just being an asshole? Someone looking for wank fodder?

Both the above along with deliberately obtuse.

I believe "troll" in general, when it comes to internet forums, refers to a person who instigates just for the sake of causing disruption.

I believe it has a more subjective meaning in actual use. More like "We don't like your kind." Which is a distasteful thing to say.

kdsub -> RE: Feeding the Trolls (5/7/2013 10:06:43 PM)

There have been many called trolls in this discussion forum. A few have been here for kicks and are "TROLLS" but most just have an extreme viewpoint that the majority take as trolling because to them it is so outlandish.

Because these boards often bring out the extremes, especially in political viewpoints, I tend to ignore those who are extreme rather then call them names and fight on the boards...Most of the time anyway...Every now and then though I just have to tell them what I think...but that is often a mistake that earns me a warning from the mods.

ChainTee -> RE: Feeding the Trolls (5/7/2013 10:14:00 PM)

Its a word use by people who like to define themself as serious hardcore onliners.

Mostly the people who use it are the type of people who spend every minute of the day online from the time they get up, until they go back to bed and do little else.

SlightlyScared -> RE: Feeding the Trolls (5/8/2013 9:23:43 AM)

You know, I've never heard that as a definition for a troll before.

Sorry for the confusion, I meant someone who purposely causes disruption by antagonising people, usually using controversial topics like religion or politics but in this case, of course, they'd be using kink and the strong views most people have (even if those views are strongly live and let live). Trolls in this sense rarely actually care about the topic, they just think its funny to wind people up.

It wasnt a definition for the word troll.

It was a definition for people who use the word troll, and take pleasure in calling other people trolls.

AFAIK is the same as in the rest of internet social media. Someone whose basic purpose on the social interaction is to fight. Similar to a fan of horror movies who likes to be frightened (adrenalin boost), the troll gets the same on social fights and to a certain point addicted on them.

The more you fight with a troll, the more he will fight back. He will never get tired. He is an expert on verbal attacks, knows different ways to offend or disturb his target and has always, always, a "last word" to say (because he does not really want the conflict to stop - ever).

Usually he fortifies his position with humor. Laughing at the other person is the easiest position in a social conflict in order to get hurt as less as possible and hurt as much as possible. He can counter with arguments (if he finds one) or not: there is always some joke to be made at the cost of the other.

For him, admitting that you are disturbed or hurt by the words of the other is "losing", whereas driving the other person madly in anger is "winning". Even if he *is* madly in anger he will never admit it, preferring to simulate that he is laughing and counterattack.

A person can be an asshole without it being a troll. I have been called an asshole because I countered a comment on a personal tragedy of somebody with a cold analysis. I was probably the opposite of diplomatic, and probably really an asshole at that point, but I was serious (Rule #1 of Trolls - they seem to laugh about anything) and the analysis, even if cold, was the result of a considerable effort and seriously meant.

The sentence "don't feed the troll" refers to the counter-strategy of simply ignoring their comments or even their user account at all (something I am very fond of, see my signature). This is the only strategy which will drive the troll away, but be careful - this drives also well intended, serious people away. Handle with care.

Best regards.

And B.

Of course I have much more colourful descriptives than the much overused word, 'troll'.

Correct.

Dear Spiritedsub2, even if I do not dare to qualify ChainTee yet, this sentence is exactly the kind of things you can expect from a troll as "opening fire".

Observe how he attacks immediately everybody who has used, is using or will use, the word "troll" in this thread, telling that:
- They are not really hardcore onliners, as they only "like to define themselves as".
- They have no life and do nothing useful.
- They spend all their time online.

So, from a general question (like yours) he makes a general attack to many people at the same time, which are reading this thread.

The obvious intention is to "open fire", to get answers as offensive as possible, to start the fights.

Observe his reaction in the rest of the thread to get more examples.

Best regards.
