I hate A & F stores. They're always overpoweringly stinky with cloying perfume and head-splittingly loud music. Their clothes/prices suck and I wouldn't even buy that stuff in a thrift shop unless I was making cleaning rags for my housekeeper.

Maybe we should all stop worrying about trivial things. If people are so worried about a store carrying only small sizes, they should get a sewing machine, learn to sew and make their own clothes that are much more unique that you don't see on every person walking down the street. Become a designer and change what you don't like. Make your own style in your own size. Hire a tailor. Or just stop whining. I should add that it's not that I haven't been frustrated by not being able to find clothes to fit my body but what I learned is that there will always be these types of stores. Emphasize the plural there. So, boycotting just one store (by the way, at least that CEO had the balls to be honest about their demographic even though we all knew what it was anyway) isn't going to change body shaming or how someone feels about their body. One gives that power to either another person or another entity. Is it unethical, unfair, etc. for a store to do that? Sure. Are there much more important things in the world right now to worry about than whether or not teenagers can or can't fit into le trendy clothes that most likely were made by tiny hands in a third world country? Uh. Yeah. Most people in the world would be grateful to have clothes and wouldn't give a shit where they came from. They'd be grateful for blankets, clean water, food, not worrying about bombs when they walk down the street. Privileged children STFU.

This interview is from 2006 and it's just making waves now? That's some crack reporting there. Must be a slow news day. Maybe we can get the IRS to crack down on A&F, too. I've shopped there before. I'll probably shop there again. If I do, I may stop by Chick Fil A on my way for lunch. If you don't like the way the guy does business, don't shop there. It's not like it's the only clothes retailer on the planet. The dude handing out A&F clothes to the homeless? Nice gesture but maybe he needs to get a life.

Well I'm far from privileged, first of all. And this is a *discussion* board where we discuss our opinions on various topics. Or are you saying you never discuss any news items other than the horrifics you mentioned above?

I don't personally shop there because I don't particularly like their clothes. It was only later that I learned their CEO is a chump. I fit into their clothes but even when I didn't, I shopped at stores who made clothes that fit me. How suggesting I should have been making my own clothes has anything to do with discussing the philosophy of a CEO is beyond me.

A medley of thoughts that I'm too tired to connect:

(a) Welcome to Collarchat! We hope you find interesting conversation, support in times of trial, and cool friends here. And we wouldn't mind if you learned to paragraph your text.

(b) Most of us, I assure you, are keenly aware that life holds greater things to worry about. Hence the appeal of the occasional diversion. You may want to check out the Politics and Religion section.

(c) Back in the sixties and seventies, feminists stressed that "The personal is political." That comes to mind as I think about A&F. The deliberate use of elitism and marginalization of the "not cool" kids (of whatever age)--and the fact that this strategy succeeds--raises disturbing, at least to me, questions about what values our culture holds and, even more important, imparts to future generations.

(d) If you're truly burning to make the world a better place, there are more effective ways to do that than an online tantrum.

When I referred to the privileged kids, I was referring to the original rant by the 18 year old kid who felt the need to start this whole ridiculousness aimed at AC & F and its CEO's statement. The kid apparently had an eating disorder and that was his reason for starting the boycott even though the CEO's quote, while reprehensible, had nothing to do with weight. I've been around long enough to see these stores and get frustrated by them. Somehow, I have survived without them in my life. Understand I am not attacking anyone here with my statements. I'm just saying that people like Che Gueverra are rolling in their graves because this is what people are fighting for. I mean, give me a break.

And that's the end of my participation in the forums or message boards or what have you. Exit stage left.

There is one of their stores very close to where I live..I remember going in there once as a size 12 and there were no sizes over 10 I believe at the time.....after seeing their CEO and what he said about their clothes being made for only thin and good looking people I would not even shop there for a gift for someone now....Like a few other people said about his looks I feel the same way..do they let him shop there???

I read a comment on an article about this topic and someone said he looked like the love child of Gary Busey and Andy Rooney and it made me laugh..but they are or were in one case more attractive than him! Also, someone said he reminded them of that character on that old show "Max Headroom"...ha ha
