Melatonin is a natural secretion of your pineal gland. It is a hormone that attaches to certain base receptors in your brain, and is now thought to be excreted in most people when light is decreased to darkness (a natural sleep-wake cycle between night and day). From what you describe, it sounds like there may be other issues at hand. The CNS controls sleep more than melatonin, and the effects of the hormone aren't necessarily certain. However, the body is a system, and no two people are alike in how they will react to a given substance. For you, your body may have compensated for a sudden increase in melatonin levels by increasing serotonin or gamma-aminobutyric acid; the latter which gives an almost synthetic euphoria similar to moderate alcohol consumption (not over-consumption). Serotonin can have a similar effect as well. If you're having troubles sleeping consistently, it would be advisable to see your medical practioner. Sleep issues can be an indicator of numerous issues not specifically isolated to sleep, or they can simply be something that you need help with to figure out a good plan to get back into a natural cycle w/ or w/out the use of sleep aides. Melatonin is not available in all countries OTC, and this reaction may be one that forewarns you of possible danger. Remember, the brain has many glands that effect the endocrine system, and affecting one can certainly counter-effect another.
