ORIGINAL: peppermint Mine are not true Aracuanas, but are really mutts that carry the gene for colored eggs. I'm planning on putting all our egg shells in there for them to eat and somewhere I read that you can feed the yogurt. That should help with the calcium. DO NOT feed your chickens egg shells!! Calcium booster yes but giving them the shells encourages eating their eggs when they are nutrient deficient. While this is "oragnic & natural" it also creates a long list of behavioral issues. "Hen pecked" is not just a man saying, its a real thing that's anything but pretty in a ccop. Wire top on your chicken yard especially with a shade fabric will allow you to turn pullets (feather growing chicks) to be able to be outside. 1 extra nest box for the number of hens you have is best. I prefer a trough with sliding dividers so nests can be bigger or smaller than a set size, but these are harder to do as its a custom only thing. Fake eggs enhance laying as it produces a peer pressure to produce more. Wooden fakes are most pften used but with arucana you can use pastel easter eggs filled with sand. Quick chick has always served me well. Organic vegetable table scraps can be given. Chicks make sure you have marbles in the waterers...some say they get "hypnotized" & will drown themselves in the half inch of water. Have had loss due to this but still don't understand the why. Roosters are dinner for a reason. No use wasting time on egg laying type rooster, they will be small, usually stringy & not worth the time & expense of growing out. My experience cornish/whiterock make best broiler (cooking) chickens. A weekly sprinkling with the hose on a sunny day will allow them to preen & clean themselves once feathers have all come in.
