defiantbadgirl -> question about coloring hair (5/9/2013 9:16:48 PM)

In February, I went to a salon to have my hair lightened. I was told because I have a perm (I know perms are out of style, but I have very fine hair and got the perm to add thickness and to stop my hair from slipping out of updo's), bleaching my hair too much at once would fry it. The hairstylist said it could be done gradually and proceeded to lighten it 2 shades. Today, I went back to get my hair lightened 2 more shades and the same stylist told me it couldn't be lightened any more at all without cutting all my length off. She said there was close to a 100% chance my hair would "turn to mush." I didn't just get the perm. It's been at least 6+ months. Everything I've read online says it's okay to bleach permed hair as long as it has been 3 months since the perm. Should I just go to a different salon in 3 months or is she right that permed hair can never be lightened more than 2 shades no matter how long ago the perm was?

If she said that further bleaching was a bad idea, maybe you should take her word for it. After all, she has actually worked on your hair and knows how healthy or how damaged it is. Crazy concept, I know.

As a stylist, I would agree....IF she knows your hair. The best way is to ask her to do a strand test on a couple of strands and see what happens. You can never go wrong with strand tests.

There was a girl at my school that did what you're talking about, and her hair did turn to mush and fell out. However, different ppl have different hair and can withstand different levels of damage. But as I said, strand test.

Did the same hairdresser do the perm, or did you do the perming yourself?

Perms cause damage.
The hair does not un-perm but instead has to grow out.... so if you want undamaged hair the permed hair has to be cut off.
Your hair may straighten as it grows, due to the weight of it, but multiple perms on the length cause more damage to the strands.

Getting it cut and then starting over would be your best bet; and you can discuss a gentler perm or creative strategies for up-dos that stay.

Edit: clarity

Never do a perm and color in the same week, especially if you have thin and/or damaged hair. You may end up with bald spots. My sister did this a few months ago and her hair is still growing back!

Folrget the hair stylist and give yourself a lemon juice rinse and go sunbathing.

This is not a good idea for many women with dark hair. It will not give them blonde streaks, it will turn their hair orange.

According to you she didn't say that permed hair can never be lightened more than two shades. She said YOUR hair should not be lightened again. One of you went to school and does this for a living.

You can trust the internet or a professional. Did it occur to you that perhaps because your hair is damaged (not just from the perm), she isn't willing to risk highlighting your hair again and be held responsible for it falling out?

This.

Just because the perm was done months ago, does not mean the effects of it have left your hair.

As others have said, she's a professional at what she does; you are not. I listen to my hair stylist, and I follow her advice, even if I have to wait for what I want. The end result is that I'm constantly complimented on my hair - that it looks shiny and healthy and the color looks natural. If you want a healthy, natural look, listen to what your stylist is telling you.

Perfect recipe for totally drying out my hair.

And turning it orange. [8D]

And experiencing skin issues (I can't sunbathe).

Not only that, but my own stylist was honest enough with me to tell me she would not let me leave her salon looking like crap because it's a reflection of her work. She likes her clients to be walking billboards - it brings in more clients.

More than once I have looked at someone's hair and thought I'd never use their stylist.

LafayetteLady -> RE: question about coloring hair (5/10/2013 12:11:58 PM)

I agree totally. Although it is a very rare thing for me to go for a haircut.

NuevaVida -> RE: question about coloring hair (5/10/2013 12:15:07 PM)

Every 6-8 weeks for me!

ShaharThorne -> RE: question about coloring hair (5/10/2013 1:32:42 PM)

I keep threatening to color my hair (got grey streaks). I am growing out of my pixie cut into a modest bob. Lizard just stripped her hair and it is blonde...her original color is a brunette (I was blonde and her dad is black haired). She does use conditioner so it would not be so messed up.

Cut, color every 8 weeks, and every other visit I get highlights and low lights.

lmpishlilhellcat -> RE: question about coloring hair (5/10/2013 3:43:58 PM)

I would definitely trust the stylist. She's a professional. I would also ask her if there are any special shampoos that you can use. Redkin makes some really good healing products for your hair. Typically adding more protein to your hair will stop breakage and make it stronger.

I get my hair cut every four weeks. I do a color every 8 because my hair typically holds color pretty well. I'm very hard on my hair. I straighten and blow dry my naturally curly locks so I do cuts every four weeks. It keeps it stronger and stops the split ends from getting out of control.

I always knew the 'wild and wanton' look was actually quite an art. I just didn't want to be confronted with the evidence.

I am saddened, OG. Next time, tell me that you get your hair the way it is by hiding naked in bushes and jumping out at passing men.

Unfortunately, after the last surgery and round of radiation, I ended up with a large gray patch at the top of my head. My natural hair color is a really dark brown. (Almost black) So, the color you see is from a bottle.

The hair style itself tends to be done by driving around with the top down on the car. (during which I am NOT naked)
