Thompson. It looks like a Merkave (SP) designed and built by the Israelis, but using a few parts sourced abroad, such as the German engine made in Israel under license.

I don't doubt that Israel will be able to survive without US support for a few years. It won't be challenged militarily nor need it be challenged militarily for the Israeli State to fail. Trade and economic sanctions will achieve this goal in a few years without any resorting to force. Economically, Israel depends on access to the European Union markets. If this lifeline were to be cut off in the context of international sanctions to force Israel to comply with international law the Israeli economy would collapse in a few years. But I doubt if it will ever come to this. The Israelis would be very stupid to let things degenerate to that point, and the Israelis are not stupid - far from it, they are very canny political operators. One of the few things that all parts of the political spectrum in Israel agree upon is the absolute importance of maintaining and managing the US alliance at any cost. The threat of that alliance falling apart would be enough, IMHO, to stir the Israelis into finding their consciences and to begin acting in accordance with international law. I would imagine that merely the threat to withdraw diplomatic cover for Israeli crimes at the UN would be sufficient to stop the settlement expansion. The US has no qualms about using its diplomatic and political strength to intimidate those it considers 'rogue States'. By any standard, Israel qualifies as a rogue State. Some consistency and balance in US foreign policy may be all that is required to bring Israel to its senses.
