Did the israelies design and build that?

That's definitely an Israeli-designed ribbon.

Thompson. It looks like a Merkave (SP) designed and built by the Israelis, but using a few parts sourced abroad, such as the German engine made in Israel under license.

It is a Merkava, yes. More pics at Google.

The research I have done in the last 15 minutes indicates that that the engines are made in germany, cost $800,000 each and currently none of them work. The u.s. has entered the field and is currently supplying them a motor at a reported $200,000 per copy and the ones installed currently have finished 10,000km or field tests.

I don't doubt that Israel will be able to survive without US support for a few years. It won't be challenged militarily nor need it be challenged militarily for the Israeli State to fail. Trade and economic sanctions will achieve this goal in a few years without any resorting to force. Economically, Israel depends on access to the European Union markets. If this lifeline were to be cut off in the context of international sanctions to force Israel to comply with international law the Israeli economy would collapse in a few years.

But I doubt if it will ever come to this. The Israelis would be very stupid to let things degenerate to that point, and the Israelis are not stupid - far from it, they are very canny political operators. One of the few things that all parts of the political spectrum in Israel agree upon is the absolute importance of maintaining and managing the US alliance at any cost. The threat of that alliance falling apart would be enough, IMHO, to stir the Israelis into finding their consciences and to begin acting in accordance with international law. I would imagine that merely the threat to withdraw diplomatic cover for Israeli crimes at the UN would be sufficient to stop the settlement expansion.

The US has no qualms about using its diplomatic and political strength to intimidate those it considers 'rogue States'. By any standard, Israel qualifies as a rogue State. Some consistency and balance in US foreign policy may be all that is required to bring Israel to its senses.

Also, as I mentioned earlier, a lot of US taxpayers believe that it's "God's will" that America give unconditional support to Israel, so from their point of view, the choice is this: Do they continue supporting Israel and complying with the will of God - or they do they stop supporting Israel and go against the word of God?

I assume you are referring to the 'Christian Zionists', a group usually associated with the wackier end of the Religious Right spectrum. But this is far from representing a general Christian perspective.

For instance, the more mainstream Presbyterian Church at its last Synod, voted >70% to boycott products of Occupied Palestine (aka the 'settlements'). A proposal to divest from 3 major US corps that profit form supplying goods and services to support the Occupation failed by a mere 2 votes (out of, IIRC c600 eligible votes). It seems destined to pass when put to the next Synod.

The multiple foreign policy disasters of the last Administration gave Americans a hint of how a Biblically-influenced foreign policy might work. I see no evidence that Americans are queueing up to repeat that disaster.
