I was curious how many Trekies are here and if any of you have read any of the books. In the novels do they give the translation for the alien tongues and if they do how do they do it?

I am very much a Trekkie, but I don't read the books.  Was there something specific you need translated?  I'm pretty good at Klingon, a little Vulcan, a little Romulan, The Children of Tarma, very little Betazoid.  Ok, I don't feel like too much of complete geek admitting all of that. [8|]

Actually I was curious how they used "alien language" in the books. If they translated it or let the reader discover the meaning.

The books are written in english but if you rotate them 180 degrees they are printed in alien language.

I have always liked StarTrek Loki, but I don't read any of the books. I have found that holograms are much more visually stimulating. OK..gotta go, have to beam down and get a cup of coffee...twice (you do realize she's alien, right?) brewed some new blend.

I love Star Trek. I used to read the books quite often. For the most part, there is a translation so that you understand what the aliens are saying. If they are terms for certain things, usually those things are described. Ex: a large sabretooth like spotted cat on Vulcan had a name I can't remember, but I do remember the description of the cat, which is not included in the series.

They actually came up with real languaeges smiles The translation in the movie when the klingons did shakespear was rough since klingons do not have "to be" in their vocaublary
I have the books movies a telephone mugs collector plates and the tapes on how to speak conversational klingon as well as the rules of acquisition....umm...well i did say Im a nerd

What I really really really want is a tribble that coos....sighs no one has ever given Me a tribble...oh how troubled I am....

i'm the mom of a die-hard trek fan who reads, watches, records and dreams in Star Trek "speak".  Does that count?  i gave him a nice bookcase for his books -- he collects the old ones at used book club stores...

There is indeed a klingon -english dictionary out there. and somewhere i happen to have a buttload of star trek fonts, email me privately if you would want em and i can try to find em ok?

I am a fan. I have read a couple of books, but those were badly written and discouraged me from reading any others.

I am a trekkie, I admit to watching all of the episodes, ranging from the Kirk era, to Voyager, and even the Enterprise shows, nothing like Scott Bakula, for a Captain. I even do the Simm's I won't put the addy here, but if anyone wants to have the URL's for them, get in touch with me on the otherside (IM/E-mail) I read the books as and when i can get them, I read the first novel from the episode "Broken Bow" and have several, TNG, DS9, Voyager, TOS, and one of the Enterprise series.

Some local colleges even offer Klingon as a second language. It's on the agenda to take. I'm a die hard Trekie, read quite a few books and they would offer breif translations as footnotes.

Okay, I am writing a series of books (Atlantis sagas). The protagonist does not speak English. I am about to finish the third book and fleshed out all three for uniformity and fact checking, I am really glad I haven't published them or I would have been confounded by contradictions. Being quite a deviant I put the protagonists language in un-translated. If you follow the book you learn the language as the heroin's do and there is a dictionary in the back of the book. It has finally occurred to me that a lot of people do not want to be mystified by the alien tongue and want to know what he is saying right then. It makes for an interesting read as it is because there is dialogue that is going on that the heroines discover later on that makes for some humorous moments in the story. I would rather not translate what it is he is saying, but for casual readers they may get confounded with it and not read on. I can't quite pigeon hole it as erotica, the plot and story is too rich, but the sex scenes are very explicit and I have received a lot of feedback on how intense the story as well as the passion is. Those who have read them love them and say they have never read erotica nearly as intense. However it has been extreme intellectuals, like you people here that have read them and I am aware that the members of CM are cut from a different cloth and really enjoy the surreal challenge. So i am confronted with dilemma of whether or not to translate them in the passages. The only books I could think of that would have done this would be the Star Trek novels. I am pleased with them un-translated but I have evolved the language to a conversational level so it reads fine for me. Nevertheless I do want to realize a profit from them but no so much as to sell out the mystery of the language.

As a Sci Fi buff, I would prefer to read them with the dictionary in the back as you have them written. But that's just me.Lemme know when  you get them published, I'll buy a copy.

Ditto here, if you just put a note at the bottom, saying the translation for this bit is at the back lol, saves people looking at the back of the book to find out what happens.
