What's a good antivirus program?

DomKen -> RE: Antivirus (5/10/2013 9:53:50 PM)

I like avast. It's free and simply installs and works. I've never had any problems with it unlike norton and mcafee.

Lucylastic -> RE: Antivirus (5/10/2013 9:59:24 PM)

I use avg, and zone alarm,altho, avast is good too. I wouldnt use norton if ya gave me a million bucks.

MalcolmNathaniel -> RE: Antivirus (5/10/2013 10:19:45 PM)

At my last job we used AVG on my recommendation. The main reason I recommended it was because of a central administration console. You sort of need that when you have 170 computers to look after. I got a lot of false positives.

At home I use Avast! Besides having excellent detection capabilities and very few false positives it has an excellent selection of languages, including Pirate Talk. That's the language I use and it's just lots of fun (sound should be enabled.)

Why? I have used Norton, which is why I ask.

MisterP61 -> RE: Antivirus (5/10/2013 11:16:12 PM)

I also personally will not use Norton. Main reason is the difficulty in use for the user. I prefer McAfee, but I also get this for free from the military and its got a really good firewall built into it. With that said most will do what you want them to do, just make sure you research the one you are planning on using to make sure they are legit. There are "hacking" anti-virus programs out there.

absolutchocolat -> RE: Antivirus (5/11/2013 5:24:03 AM)

ESET is the absolute best. This comes from the computer guys that repair my machine.

Norton is hard to remove from your system, AVG doesn't cover the most up-to-date viruses. Also ESET runs constantly in the background, so it requires very little maintenance.

Focus50 -> RE: Antivirus (5/11/2013 6:17:54 AM)

I've used AVG Free for probably a decade now. Never had a virus or any hassles in general....

However, talking to the local computer whiz when my sister's pc went into cardiac arrest recently, he recommends Microsoft's own free anti-virus. Errrrm...., Microsoft Security Essentials...? Google is not now nor has ever been my friend.

While it's not a big deal with my own newish pc and Windows 7, he says AVG does tend to have a lot going on in the background, which consequently slows your computer - which was a problem with my earlier XP versions.

That all said, I'm no computer genius so before I dispense with AVG myself, perhaps those more knowledgeable will belong with their thoughts on the Microsoft product.

Focus.

Every time I've ever used norton it has been a hassle. I once got a new machine with norton preinstalled. I installed office and found norton wouldn't let outlook send mail. It took me a full day of reading stuff online and about an hour on hold with norton CS before I got it fixed.

For me personally, I use my computer for business,and that entails using the internet a great deal, and for work, and I use fairly intensive memory progs, Norton slows me down to a crawl, hangs a lot of the programs I use on a regular basis , and for some pretty stupid reasons.
I had it on my computer many many years ago and had nothing but problems with it, when I got this computer, it came preloaded and made my computer run like it was running windows 3.1. Took me forever to clear itout of my registry too
I know people who swear by it, but its definitely not something I like having on any of my computers
just my opinion:)

MasterG2kTR -> RE: Antivirus (5/11/2013 8:10:18 AM)

Malwarebytes is good too.

The one thing to consider is that there isn't any one program that catches everything bad, so you should always use more than one AV program. Have only one running continuously in background and run any others on a regular schedule or when you think you might have a problem. Also before running any of them always download the latest definition updates.

I use Malwarebytes and AVG (both free) and they keep the system humming nicely. I used to use Spybot in lieu of AVG but I don't like it since they came out with the 2.0 version.

lmpishlilhellcat -> RE: Antivirus (5/11/2013 8:18:42 AM)

I use sophos antivirus, but I have a mac and have no idea how that works for a windows based PC.

LizDeluxe -> RE: Antivirus (5/11/2013 8:19:45 AM)

I use the Avast paid version. It seems to do well and has protected my machine well. What I like about Avast is that unlike other products (such as Norton) it seems to be fairly unobtrusive and does not impact the performance of my system. Norton made my machine almost grind to a halt at times. Booting up was torture.

freedomdwarf1 -> RE: Antivirus (5/11/2013 8:57:02 AM)

Short story:-
I used to use Sygate AV. Then moved onto ZA.
I tried both at once - damn near stalled my PC so one had to go.
I Always thought I was well covered.
Until I went to the US for 8 months.... got my first virus and it killed my PC stone dead!
I got the Corporate version of XP and re-installed that.
I discussed with my friend I was staying with (a bit of a PC whizz-kid) what he would suggest for a decent AV.
His first words were - "nothing that you download or use for free".
Why? because, despite what they tell you, it's a cut-down version to any "Pro" version you would pay for.
(ETA: Think about it for a mo.... Why ask people to pay for something that you are offering for 'free' and does the same job?? ....Or does it?? It would be commercial suicide to make both versions the same.)

Next, one of his customers phoned to say he thought he'd got a virus in his office network and his PC.
We brought his PC back and I plugged his hard drive into my PC and ran a full Norton AV scan.
I stopped it after 3 days - it had found well over 150,000 trojans, spyware, malware, hijacks and all manner of things!!
...And he was using a "paid for" version of MacAffee Internet Office security - cost him $7,500 at the time.
And since returning to the UK I have had many PC's and laptops that had MacAffee pre-installed and found many bits of malware and spyware.
So you can imagine my opinion of MacAffee! [:D]

We also know that Norton doesn't like certain hardware. Sometimes it's great, on others, it's crap.
We spent nearly 3 months continuously monitoring the 21 PC's with various different AV's.
Upshot?? basically, all the free ones failed miserably and most only monitor incoming traffic, not outgoing.
So *if* you managed to get a virus, the AV software won't stop it spreading if it doesn't also monitor outgoing traffic.

I have a fair old mixture of 12 PC's on my home network; different hardware but essentially all WinXP Pro.
What do I use these days??
I use AVG 2013 Professional - (not the free one) on most of my machines here.
I also use MalwareBytes Pro - again, not the free version.
AVG does tend to throw up quite a few false positives. Better safe than sorry and you can always add those you know are safe to your exclusion list.
Norton is fine if it likes your hardware. If not, it's really slow and crap. I gave it a miss as the subs are expensive.
Avast, BlackIce and Kaspersky didn't do too well in my tests.
When I'm testing, I deliberately go to places with trojans and spyware and other nasty things.

And the Ms freebie (Microsoft Security Essentials)?? It seems ok. It got reasonable write-ups on quite a few forums.
I found it easy to use and doesn't impinge on my systems here.
My only comment is its slow at updating and scanning compared to MalwareBytes and AVG Pro.

On my main PC (this one), it takes nearly 2 whole days to scan my hard drives.
But... It does have over 4,000Gigs and it's pretty full - well over 8 million files.

So.... My personal recommendation would be MalwareBytes, Ms Essentials, and possibly AVG Pro.
I would never use the freebie version either.

They seem to work alongside each other fairly well - not all AV's do.

And as MG2 said - there is absolutely nothing out there that will catch everything.
I use those that seems to prove themselves and don't slow my PC down for a minimal price.

MisterP61 -> RE: Antivirus (5/11/2013 9:10:23 AM)

Whew.... Thank god that was your short story :P. Good breakdown of the AV's out there though. :D

Yep, I've been using that for a few years now. It's been fine. Hassle-free, in fact.

Jeez, are you designing a new solar system or something, FD?

FelineRanger -> RE: Antivirus (5/11/2013 10:03:38 AM)

I've used the free version of AVG for years without a problem. Going by the computer mags, AVG and Avast seem to go back and forth about which one has the best free AV program. Reviews of both usually include the phrase "as good as a paid version," too.

I use AVG but may consider switching to Avast just for the Pirate talk! Might actually interest my kids to run it.
