Emperor1956 -> RE: Goddamit! I am mad enough to bite one of those disco bannanas! (6/25/2006 12:01:35 PM)

Ron, I grew up nearly spitting distance from the Allis-Chalmers plant, and I still remember watching those beauties (c. 1964 or so) roll out of West Allis around the world.  And this was ALLIS-CHALMERS, no effing Eye-talian "Fiat Allis".  I also remember watching Ramblers leave the AMC plant (Sigh).

But I'm all over John Deere, and yes, I have an incredible weakness for the 30s Farmalls -- with the sleek streamlined cowling?  Bought my first tractor when I was 22, living in a highrise apt in Downtown Chicago, and saw a beautiful, shiny (RED) of course Farmall  A at a swap meet...$600 later, I towed it to my fancy-ass urban condo parking garage and parked it in one of my spaces...I think I gave up $2400 in rent in that first year just to have it there.  They flourished for a while at various family spreads...but now they are all in storage, and I have to decide what to do with 'em.

And while I'm not a farmer, and currently don't own much more than my little plot of land in suburban Chicago, I've spent 14 hours bouncing above one of those BRRRUP---BRRRUP cycle engines clearing brush with my brother, or my father-in-law.  You know what Ron (whispers)  A young guy spends 14 hours on a hard-sprung tractor, and finds out that 1.  his dingus don't work for a day after and worse 2.  He aches so much HE DOESN'T CARE.

OUCH.

E.

Oh, fuck......now that is a kink I appreciate.  I remember when harley davidson went AMC... and I rembember uncle Ray-Ray in the sleek Rambler Americain........he was the sort of fellow that was written about in Dickonson novels......don't worry, something will turn up.....when you could find them the old double body ambassadors were great for demo derbies, they only had to be watched for hitting wheel wells, cause that double body would kink them out and stick the tire and axle.

Great americana buddy.

Kinda like when you stub your toe on something and hop around the house laughing in tears 'cause life is just so unfair...........

What do you guys do when you want to implode like that?

Sounds like one of those occasions when a good whipping could be downright relaxing -- and help restore some perspective....

LOL, geez Ron I know where you are as to feelings.. about old junk, that isnt worth the effort it takes to keep it running.. but I might suggest ya take the pittman arm in to the welding shop  and  patch it up , (I do know what a poittman arm is  and  what its gonna do)  dont ry to weld it together with a full penatration weld.  butt weld  the ends  as well as you can with out detempering it too badly  and run a "splint alonmg the side where you have a little clearance.. As for when I get one of those days , I just yell and  throw a few  things out in the back of the barn, till I relize  how dumb I must look,  then go  get the what ever it is fixed/replaced/found... lol. hope you come across a replacement  soon..{ next time run  the subbi/slave out there with a swingblade  first}

Try these two links, i know how hard those parts are to find. In the little town where i had my farm Allis Chalmers was the only tractor dealer. The first has one in stock but is high priced, the other one is of course ebay where you have to weed through the crap.

Good luck and remember any real true mechanic says the magic formula(d**m  mo***er f**k**g piece of s**t)before attempting any repairs.

I would just shrug, put the Allis Chalmers aside for a bit and use the late '50s era IH to finish the mowing. I'd deal with the A-C when I was in a better mood, all the while praying that the eccentric bearing isn't as munged up as I think it is. A good welder/blacksmith could modify a slightly mismatched Pittman arm, so I wouldn't worry too much about that.
