Status: offline 		Last time I called animal control it was a stray pit bull looking dog. It was really sweet and had a big mass by its crotch making her look like she had a penis, well ac came and got her but they pretty promptly decided go put her down.


I'm afraid if we take him in, and he doesn't pass their little tests or something he'd be put down

Anyone know what likely May happen once his stray hold is up?

Status: offline 		There is a specific Husky rescue. See if you can do a search and find them. They have special needs and these rescue people that work with them are great.

Status: offline 		Rawni, I've called a few, but as far as I know there's none local. The listings were all for la, and marine county and south ca and stuff. Basically all bout 2 hours to 9 or more hours away.

He's been here two days, I really can't/ don't want to keep him much longer. He doesn't like Calley May, I borrowed a crate from homeward bound, but it's not fair to him to have him in the crate for 24 hours with just pee breaks, and occasional flop about my room while Calley is in granmas house.

They don't have to be local. Contact them all. Many rescue organizations have contacts that will travel hundreds of miles to move a dog to their foster system.

Status: offline 		The Husky rescues are few and far apart, but they often work with the local agency that you would normally take a found pet. You just have to contact the rescue first and make sure it's arranged, so that you can drop him/her off and transported to them. They are cute/beautiful... but they are not always easy to manage unless you know how to train them. You don't train them, they will train you. lol We had one that was an escape artist. I was gone from home for ten minutes. Drove up in the drive way and saw my gate opening. He was standing on two legs, used his paw to open the latch and was walking out!

The other was too smart for her own good. The rescue said she was psycho. I knew that.

They are working dogs... if they aren't working, they could be workin it. Crating them can be a problem. So I hope you can find some help soon.

I'm also a huge softy I have to be careful not to get attached, he's extremely sweet.

My dad said he'd like me to have him and the after he learned their escape artists and need tons of time and energy he said well no,he's to much dog for me. I don't want him. HE'S not very old, less than a year maybe. He has no manners, no training no nothing. Though he does appear to be potty trained.

There are people who get free pets and then sell them to labs for money, or they use them as dog fighting bait. Also, people who get a pet for free are often making an impulsive, emotional decision, only to find that they don't have -- or won't spend -- the money to provide the pet with proper vet care. Those dogs typically end up being "yard ornaments" -- chained to a stake in the back yard for the rest of their lives. There are good pet owners that look for a free pet on craigslist, but you just never know.

If you can contact a group that will take him but you need transportation, there are groups of volunteers who drive dogs to a safe place. I often drive on transports where we take Southern dogs from high kill shelters to rescues up north, where they have stricter spay/neuter laws.

Status: offline 		Huskies are typically in high demand pretty much anywhere you go. Make a Craig's List posting, be sure to include photos of him and ask for a $5 "rehoming fee" ... He'll have a new home in no time. (I know you have a listing on another site but it doesn't hurt to list him in more than one place.)

Status: offline 		Look for "No kill" shelter...... NOT animal control

ETA: Many dogs are now "chipped" that is, have small electronic chips inserted under their skin to help find the owners. Also - tattoos in groin area. Might be over-grown so not recognizable.

Quick trip to a vet can help determine if he's wearing a chip. Many vets will check for free, mainly because - if not too far from home - they're the ones who might have inserted it and will be happy to help reunite one of their customers with the dog.

Not all of them are escape artist. lol We had one that was. They are highly intelligent and very active dogs. They were used as working dogs and they can be one of the best dogs for a pet, if you understand them. Just like people they are different, but in general, they are smart, active and need to be busy. Ours were great with kids and a joy, but sometimes families get one because they are so pretty and then don't know how to manage them and they can be abused and abandoned. Because they are so smart, the damage of loss, abandonment or abuse, sticks with them in a way I see as more extreme than some other dogs and they need a bit of attention, safety and patience.

Status: offline 		Aside from sharing my dogs food, andd I really can't spare to much food.I'm afraid the longer her stays HE will become attached and think h belongs here and be heart broken when it's time to move on.

Status: offline 		Get her to a vet for a chip scan, as Lance suggested. My vet (and most) charge nothing for this service. Don't wait, do it soon so she can be reunited with her owners. Hopefully she is chipped and the mystery will be solved.

Status: offline 		He's microchipped , but there's no usable information. That's the first thing I did. I called Jody,asked if I could borrow a cage and she said yes and I took him with me to get the cage and she scanned him and made a buncha calls,and said well there's no info registered to the chip.

They are in Walnut Creek - 2 hours from you. They may be able to arrange for transportation.
Let them know you found a stray, can't identify owners from his chip, and let them know he and your dog are not getting along. See if they can help.

The problem is, most shelters are so full right now, the rescues are pulling from their Red Listed dogs to save them, and even they are having trouble finding foster homes. But call them and see - they may be able to arrange for a foster home near you. The rescues don't need to be local to you - I've been working with a friend who does pitbull rescue in LA. They work with rescues all over the place. The rescues don't actually house the dogs, they have fosters who house them, and the fosters can be pretty much anywhere, as long as they're rescue-backed and pass inspection.

If you need to take him to a shelter, I understand the one on Bradshaw is state of the art. Many shelters will hold dogs for a few weeks before putting them down to make room for new intakes.

DO NOT list this guy on Craigs List. Bad, Bad idea.

There are currently 26 huskys in need of homes on the Northern Cal rescue site.

Please do not put an ad on Craigs List - you have no idea who will be getting the dog and there are crazies out there.
