Still an atheist here but it's God's fault that people (the only creature to walk the planet that has the power of reason), *choose* to live in these places. Or in beach homes, or on flood plains or adjacent to volcanoes or geographical faults etc? Ok, not everyone does actually have a lot of choice on their particular circumstances but the majority do....

The "majority" only if you restrict your vision to mobile people living in wealthy nations. The "majority" if you ignore the walls that nations put up and the anchors and chains imposed by poverty. Where in the world are people free of pestilence? Where in the United States is there space invunerable to climatic or geological disaster? Lightening will strike your ass even on the 18th hole of your country club. [:D]

Well, when praying for the poor ignorant heathens doesn't work, there's always the Inquisition, hmmm?

If the people doing the praying are doing it from a kindness of their heart perspective, then I'd feel not in the least offended. Like if I was ill and someone prayed for me.

If, however, they are praying for me to see the error of my ways and convert then they can get themselves a taxi. To the far side of fuck. One way.

For the record, the "praying for" that is being discussed WAS about a specific issue that was going on at the time. Definitely NOT the "save you from your ignorance" kind of thing. Although I'm beginning to wonder whether or not that might be necessary as well.

Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition

Not if you hold a 1 iron up over your head.

Not even God can hit a 1 iron.

Exactly. Of course Atheists don't believe in God, but he's not talking to Atheists. He's talking to believers, and directly addressing the divisive notion that you can't be good without a belief in God in a way that undercuts that whole crock of shit. I count it a step forward, and for the Catholic church a big one, even if certain professional victims feel compelled to find something to whine about.

And honestly I'm not all that offended by the notion either. Either the pope is right about god and whatnot in which case he's probably right about me being a child of god too or else he's not in which case it's all smoke & mirrors and who cares? But I don't need to believe in gravity in order to be constrained by it. If god exists then I don't need to believe in him either. Like everyone else I judge the pope on the basis of his actions not his words or his title. On that basis he's in pretty fucking hot water. On that basis I'm pretty sure Jesus and I would agree assuming any sort of veracity at all in the bible.

And honestly, while I'm aware of this business of me going to hell because I don't care about god or jesus my ACTUAL face to face interactions with christians don't go like that.
