Why do you assume that their army would have been left intact? The nazi armies did march home intact while being chased by the russians. They felt that it was their birthright to rule the region. In 43 there was no reason for them to disarm if we had quit fighting them. And the Allies saw no reason to stop the war till the German army was destroyed.
