It's not the gun laws, it's the subcultures within those cities that drive the crime and violence. By definition, criminals do not obey laws, law-abiding people do. You could outright ban every firearm in the US and it would barely make a dent in those numbers, because crime is a business, and good businesses find needs and fulfill them. Ban AK-47s? No problem. All an enterprising entity would have to do is go to Africa or Eastern Europe and fill a shipping container with 'em, slap a label on it that says it's 'consumer goods' and make sure the EUC paperwork looks okey-dokey, maybe bribe a port official or two and hey, presto! the urban gangs have all the assault rifles they need. Same for handguns, naturally. The only real losers are the people who obey the law. But that doesn't matter to the political machines in Chicago or New York. After all, they're protected by armed security, live in gated, patrolled, and secure communities, and don't have to worry about the things peons like us do who don't have these privileges. The fact is, most gun laws on the books are less intended to actually do something other than get their sponsors re-elected, which is much more important than actually serving their constituencies, you know.
