Chicago and gun laws

Chicago and gun laws - 5/27/2013 7:36:02 AM

Status: offline 		I am confused. I have been told that stricter gun laws would stop the violence. Then I was told that Chicago and New York have the strictest gun laws in the country. So if that is true, why do I keep reading articles like this one....

Status: offline 		It's not the gun laws, it's the subcultures within those cities that drive the crime and violence. By definition, criminals do not obey laws, law-abiding people do. You could outright ban every firearm in the US and it would barely make a dent in those numbers, because crime is a business, and good businesses find needs and fulfill them.

Ban AK-47s? No problem. All an enterprising entity would have to do is go to Africa or Eastern Europe and fill a shipping container with 'em, slap a label on it that says it's 'consumer goods' and make sure the EUC paperwork looks okey-dokey, maybe bribe a port official or two and hey, presto! the urban gangs have all the assault rifles they need. Same for handguns, naturally. The only real losers are the people who obey the law.

But that doesn't matter to the political machines in Chicago or New York. After all, they're protected by armed security, live in gated, patrolled, and secure communities, and don't have to worry about the things peons like us do who don't have these privileges. The fact is, most gun laws on the books are less intended to actually do something other than get their sponsors re-elected, which is much more important than actually serving their constituencies, you know.

Status: offline 		If you were to ask people from outside the US and many of those inside you more often hear that we have a culture of guns. People want mostly to denigrate America over its drug use and demand. Many will also throw guns in with that culture.

Those countries that do not have a legal right as we do to own guns, have not created a culture of guns and have over the centuries distilled the desire out of society. Many view the US as reckless gunslingers, ready to shoot first in arguments, disputes, crime and ask questions later.

Even the police are now shooting first and dealing with it later. Some in law enforcement have been asked why they want to be a deputy or sheriff and more often than at any time, the answer is...so I can shoot people and get away with it.

Like it or not, the US is a gunslinging country and will over time lose much of the gloss or special status among nations and also lose its luster as a 'peaceful' place to live.

At one point,the guns are owned by "law abiding" citizens.....then they are sold to whoever.......whenever.......wherever.......



They don`t just jump out of S&W`s factory in to the hands of criminals....

Unfortunately in this case George Carlin was wrong... maybe he should have read the founding documents before he cracked a joke about how many rights we have.

Even if a person doesn't believe in God surely you can't argue that people are born with rights, not given them.

that should have went up as a FR btw, because I do agree with what you said in so far as how it was intended to work, but then went on to talk about the defacto situation.

Gun deaths are actually way down in NYC. I think it's about half the national average. It isn't stricter gun laws for everyone that has achieved this. NYPD has taken an aggressive stance against illegal guns that seems to be working. Other law enforcement agencies across the country have adopted their strategies. In Chicago you only have to look at who is doing the killing and who is being killed to understand that the problem is societal in nature.

I don't think it's an infringement of civil liberties if everyone is frisked to make sure they aren't carying something they shouldn't.
