In light of another thread, I'm wondering how many here have any connection at all to the modern military. Multiple selections are available.


In fact My son just returned from deployment earlier this month. He's been in over 10 years now and going for a 20+ yr career.

The shift to an all-volunteer force plays a role in the disconnect, Mari, but it isn't the whole story. There were plenty already disconnected enough from the notion that there is an obligation to serve to give us legions of proud draft-dodgers in the decades since WWII. Hell, we even had a proud draft dodger make it into the White House.

Exactly. While appreciate the folks who thank me and other vets today I'd much prefer they put a flower on an untended veteran's grave site. I came home and my service is commemorated on the 11th day of the 11th month.

A friend of mine just wrapped up a 27 year career. He went through basic around the same time I did. There isn't much civilian demand for his particular skills, but I think he's going to do well. Had I stayed in on the other hand, they might be letting me out of Leavenworth about now. My chickenshit allergy was getting ugly.

In fact every male head of the family back six generations served from the Revolutionary war through today…although not always for the Republic. I served 4 years with a tour in Vietnam. I ended the string by having only daughters. I’ve a few grandsons and I am praying they never have to serve.

What percentage of the US population do you want in the military? Hell we already have the second largest active duty military on the planet and spend hundreds of billions more than anyone else, I mean just how big do you want our military to be?

First female in the family to enter the military and broke the Navy tradition by going Army. And then my nephew went Army as well. Army-Navy football day gets interesting.

Status: offline 		On my mom's side, they are either Navy or Marines (that second rate ground force) and on my dad's side it was army until my dad went airforce, of course, I went army to piss him off and was glad I went army.

Status: offline 		My son has his Green Beret and is an Army Sniper as well, Distinguished Honor Graduate of his class. He's been on several missions since joining Special Forces, did 2 tours of duty before that.

Well, GotSteel, what I have in my mind is by no means limited to the military (far beyond that in fact), but I'll advocate for a period of mandatory national service in some form for every able-bodied, mentally sound, man or woman who is either born a citizen of these United States, or wishes to be one.

I'm not going to hijack my own thread to it, but if you are curious, I might be able to search up a link to where I laid out a rough model of what it could look like.

What about those people that do not want to be in the position of having to kill someone, especially someone innocent but accidentally at the wrong place, wrong time?.. I expect that is also a major factor in why so few join up.. Just curious if you feel they should be forced serve regardless?

My Godmother was a Registered Nurse and then joined the (Canadian) Army as a Nursing Officer.. (But Canada has 1 day, Rememberance Day Nov 11 which all who served or still serve are commemorated). I did not vote in your poll as I am not American..

He has his moments when he gets over all the bs as well but in the end its a life he chose and what he loves to do.

I don't know, Rich. I've always thought the OP should be able to change the parameters to some degree.

Anyway, if you allow me three marriages (no direct bloodline), my family miltary history goes all the way back before the Revolutionary War.

On one hand, I agree that some form of national service would be a good thing for many people but I bristle at it being compulsory. I don't know if I want the government forcing us to do much of anything (other than not kill, steal, etc.). I think it's a personal choice and should remain that way.

One of the few organizations I support monetarily is the Peace Corps.

I don't think the military or the government is going about recruiting our young people the right way. Recruiters lie just to get people into boots but that stems from The advertisements about the government paying for college (they don't. They match the service members input.).

I think, over the last few years they have done a slightly better job (The Marine Corps, particularly) by not focusing on "We'll pay for college" but "We'll challenge you to be a better person/leader/neighbor". There's even a Marine Corps advertisement talking about people that run toward trouble.

I think that's a more honest approach. I remember soldiers in basic training saying something along the lines of: "We may have to go fight ? I joined to get my college paid for; not to die in some fucked-up war".

Anyway, I got a little long winded and I apologize. Just let me close with:

I'm a thankful American that enjoys the freedoms that are left to me and I enjoy them because of the people who served this country, either when it called or when they felt a need to be filled. God bless every one of them.

Then they would perform their national service is some other, non-military capacity, TJ. Reading what I wrote might have helped with puzzling that out.

To answer my question myself, I served at the end of the cold war and another unpleasant bit after that, and two of my brothers have done middle east tours, along with several cousins. Dad had a safe lottery number, and was never called for Vietnam, while my stepfather got his letter, reported to the draft board, and was determined to be politically undesireable.
