I agree.

To paraphrase the Defence Minister's words, borrowed from- I think- Grieg:

«We are so few, here.
Each and every fallen a brother, a son, a husband, a father.

With these bonds come the fact that no government here can afford to ignore the losses any military action may incur.

Add to it that our military is mostly educated, middle class youth with plenty of prospects, the potential for purpose and dedication is significant.

You mean like the thousands of Quakers etc. who have served in non-combatant positions over the years?

And all of those with a CO designation that have served as RAs and so forth? What exactly do you imagine happens?
I saw a lot of idle words directed at them when I was in, but I never saw anyone ordered to take part in direct combat operations.

Same. I know a lot of veterans, and my cousin is in Kuwait right now, another cousin's husband is Air Force, etc, but neither of my parents or brothers served. Both my grandfathers and one of my grandmothers did, but not more recently than Vietnam.

I am the only one on both sides of my family to serve. My Dad served about 7mos in WWII discharged for flat feet and he was a bus driver in the CBs figure that. I was drafted during Nam but spent a 2 year paid vacation in Germany.

My exwifes side lives in Europe so all males spend 2 years in military service. I think it's a good thing to go thru that training, with that said I think this Country should mind it's own business and quit trying to turn every other country into ours, which IMO is going down the drain economically and govt control is headed to Hitler and Stalin type govts. I just returned from a 7000 mile road trip and went thru 4 checkpoints, no one talks to you they are viewing a monitor and wave you past. I felt like my carryons at TSA.

I would call 7 months and a physical condition 'service', last I checked 180 days was sort of a dividing line for benefits.

My Dad has passed away and he hated to talk about the Marines. I thought he served a little later, but my Mom told me recently that he actually was a WWII vet.
