1 thing I don't want to do, is being another snobby Northern coming down here and pretend that I am somehow better than Southerners. That's discrimination in itself. I know there are some Northerns with that mentality when they come down South. It does give Northerns a bad image, being stuck up and "know it all's" . I am no better or worse than anyone else. My Grandfather is originally from the Northwest Florida area near the Alabama line. He is one of the sweetest guys I've ever met. No doubt, there are many good Southerners indeed.

There are a lot of good people in the South, just like there are a lot of backwards thinkers in the North. I've never had any problems in the South. Granted,I live in Florida, which some Southerners don't even consider part of the South. You want to see some scary movies about the Northeast, watch some Stephen King movies, lol.

The North certainly has it's fairshare of backwards thinkers, that for dam sure. I did spend sometime in rural Georgia for a time. I never had any issues there. There was one exception where there was a Klan rally near the small town where I was staying. Trust me on this, there are certainly racists in the Northeast too. In some cases, I saw more racism up there than I did down here. There is good people and bad people everywhere.

Where I'm from (the north) Florida is only considered the south for geographical purposes and is referred to as 'the place where northerners go to retire'.

I do LOVE the southern hospitality. People are much more friendlier and laid-back.
People in the north are always rush, rush, rush and leaves you feeling cold.
There are definitely good people from both regions, though.

And I eat my grits with sugar and butter. If that's not right, I'm from the north so I don't know any better!

I guess you're going to tell me next that James Bond never existed.....

Damn

Nooooooooo! Peon, tell me no. I love love love that show. I do imagine male Brits to be very...gentlemen like. Ya know, always respectful. The females to be very classy.

Charles, I've never encountered a northerner like that to me.

Had an American friend to stay recently. She was alarmed by daddy-long-legs. Apparently they have similar in the US, but they don't fly? Weird!

No, but I am going to tell you that Sean Connery wore a toupee in all his Bond films. Sorry. ;-)

Downton Abbey portrays British life during the early twentieth century as though the social classes got on pretty damned nicely. Working class Irishman, a republican to boot, one-time chauffeur to an upper class English family, later absorbed into it - husband to one of them, best man at his wedding to another? I mean, that's hilarious.

Downton Abbey was entertaining, sure, but I never forget that it was written by a high Tory and the propaganda message is *very* loud in it.

The fact that they *don't* fly in the US would scare the winkle off me. My lovely US pal described them to me - they can be mistaken for giant spiders, only (if you look closely) with the wrong number of legs? Nasty! Our daddy-long-legs just fly around as though they're drunk - they bump into things, then die. Not just harmless, but hopeless.

Wait, are you talking about actual daddy long legs or those huge Mosquitos that look like daddy long legs?

Please say the latter.

Oh thank you! I'm so glad they're not actual flying spiders! I was about to quickly cross Europe off my dream travel list.
Does anyone know what those huge mosquito-looking things are called? I've always called them mosquito eaters, but I don't think they even eat Mosquitos.

(Gran)Daddy long legs is an arachnid, and they can't fly.

There is a flying bug called a water strider that looks similar...

Believe me we have our fair share of 'Asshats' too. (I love that word! I've improved my vocabulary today!). All the Americans I've met here, & I've met quite a few as I used to live near West Ruislip USAF base & Eastcote US Marine school have been confident & well mannered, perhaps the Americans that go abroad are the upper class ones.

Perhaps this confidence in Americans is what we mistake as brashness.

Oh, I forgot, you don't have a class system .

We definitely have a class system here. It's something like low class, middle class, upper middle, and upper class. I assume the income of families determines their class. Not sure how that whole thing works. My family never discusses income. They feel its rude to do so. It could be that I'm their kid and not my business lol.

It's occurred to me that all of the people I look forward to hearing from, either on the Message Boards, or in Private Mail are American, or live in America. Are Americans genuinely friendlier than us Brits?

I suppose that there are probably more Americans on CM than from any other part of the world, but, nonetheless...

This is a fun question, deepness, unless it's positive, is not allowed .

Of the Brits I've encountered in life, some were friendly, some not - just like with Americans.

With Americans, the level of friendliness seems to vary from region to region. Areas with lower population densities seem to have more friendly people than areas with higher population densities. But even that can vary. I think people in big cities might tend to be more guarded and wary of others.

There are many things, other than money, that determines class. You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, no matter how much money you have .

QFT

Some of the classiest folks I know would probably be considered low class by income, but their actions make them classy as heck.

Flying daddy long legs......

I will not sleep for a week now.

And Sean Connery - yawn. I never thought he was the best Bond anyway.

I think it's the accent that gets me. Sigh.....

Although, I traveled with a singing group for two summers, and it cracked me up see the reaction of the Yankee and even across the pond guys to my southern accent. It's more of the Scarlet kind and less of the Joy from "My Name is Earl" kind, and you'd have thought I was Cindy Crawford when I opened my mouth. Of course, it was the 80's so the big hair probably helped......

I do remember corresponding by mail with a guy named Geoff for awhile after that first summer, and I always giggled when he used the word "whilst" in his letters - God I was silly at 18.

I see no cause for merriment at the use of the word 'whilst'. It is a fine upstanding word.
