Status: offline 		And this time can you all please stick to the question at hand instead of derailing everything with comments like why not focus on moving out first, then get one. Or should that really be a concern right now?

We want it to be usable with a usb mouse, not just touch only, no smaller than 15, but 17 is ideal.
I saw a Dell at Wal-Mart, the specs said Windows 8, waves maxx audio burn movies, photos, music to CD and DVD

Intel corei5-3337U processor, 8 gigmemory 1tb hard drive stored 250,000 plus songs, or 800 plus movies.

Our primary use is going to be gaming and internet surfing, and I'm likely to.clutter it up with music and files.

Before taxes and fees and protection plans this one is on sale for 550, and we are not really looking for higher than 698, that includes warranty, sales tax, and and any other associated fees.

Oops, derailment.

I've always used Asus. They have great battery life. Any thing from them is good, and good for gaming.

Wasn't it just a few months ago that you were saying you barely had money to pay off debt and buy groceries and that you were basically committing SSI fraud by not reporting income? And now you want a new computer so you can play games, download music, and surf the internet?

You know, maybe you should worry about more pressing issues like paying necessary bills before you think about buying frivolous crap you don't need. If you don't like the answers you get, stop asking the question and make do with what you already have like everyone else has to do. At most, look into upgrading the memory on the computer you have. That should be considerably cheaper than buying a new one.

And I appreciate people care,but when I am trying to research something, and I'm not getting any replies about the topic at hand, it's not helpful. I don't want to save up and go out and get something a because I was uninformed, be unhappy.

In your case even the off topic potshots are helpful even if they are couched in terms that seem unfriendly. I've never really seen anyone be untruthful to you. You seem to drive people to the point of being antagonistic at times because you consistently live your life in a manner that ignores making good choices.

I'd heartily suggest not getting the computer, but doing something more practical with the money to get you farther ahead somewhere instead of treading water with all the SOS in your life that keeps coming back to haunt you.

yea, like anyone would ever derail a thread on cm. lol But to get back on topic, I like your new screenname. It fits better. Oh wait, that's not on topic. Ok, can't help with the battery issue because I don't know squat about laptops, but I am about to get one and I think it might have battery issues so I am looking forward to the answers. Another thing to consider rather the large hard drive. An external hard drive. They are less expensive, so you can store lots of thing on them, keeping the hard drive on the laptop free for downloads when you are out, transferring to the external when you are back home.

Going that route will ultimately save you money.

Status: offline 		Well, I'm on my devices for literally 6 hours at a time sometimes, and even just an hour or two drains my dad's Acer when I borrow his. Now, given that I am so rarely away from home, I will be plugged in a lot, but I really would like to not tethered to an outlet, even at home. When I had the husky here, it would have been nice to sit out with him for.2/3 hours on a laptop, and on mild days I would love to set up outside, I used to love sitting outside our trailer with the laptop when we lived in Petaluma, the weather was so.gorgeous!

And, if I do go the rout of less hd space in favor of external storage,and that's a good idea, thank you, then there's more room to focus on other features, like battery. Or a bigger screen.

I would not use an external drive. Period.
Simple reason, whever you want to use it (and trust me, that will be more and more until it is almost permanently plugged in), you are using 2 lots of power; one for the laptop and one for the external drive. That doesn't save you money at all, you are using it twice over.
If that was internal, you are only using one lot of power - that saves money.
I have no idea why people think that having an external drive saves power etc because it doesn't. Every person I've met that has started with an external drive as a way to just off-load those extra files has invariably ended up with the thing being a permanent fixture.

As for the battery power, there are limits as to how long it can last and you have to be realistic.
Whatever the manufacturer says, you can almost halve that value when it is a year or more old.
Battery technology hasn't advanced enough to do what you are wanting.
You are just going to have to be realistic and tell yourself that you are never going to be able to sit outside with your laptop, unplugged, for six or more hours a day and still be able to use it sensibly.
If sitting outside is *that* important - get a friggin extension lead!!


And, I'm with all the other people who derailed your other thread.
This computer is NOT your most important expense!
I don't care what you think - it just isn't. Simple as that.
You can try to justify it all you like - you are lieing to yourself and getting yourself deeper in the shit that you cannot afford.
FORGET THIS LAPTOP and use the money more wisely!!

Status: offline 		I know what you mean as things age. He's got an old iPod, and that bugger only lasts 10 minutes from 100 percent charged, to plug in or I'm dead/ dying.

I'd be happy with 4/5 hours UN plugged with out killing to much battery, or over half left. I just would not be satisfied with a laptop that 1 or 2 hours and you've used most your battery.

I would so drag an extension cord out to the front yard from the living room lol.

I agree with the others though. Use the funds to get your bills paid off. I finally am working on my student loans so I can go back to school and get a degree.

Then you are not going to be satisfied. Period.
The bigger the screen, the more power it needs to use to run it - and you want a minimum of 17"??
Most decent laptops only have a sensible use time of 3-4 hours max.
And by that time, your battery is pretty much depleted and dead.

Get used to the idea that you will not find a laptop that has a sensible use time of 4-5 hours unplugged let alone one that will still have half its usable life left in it.
I say 'sensible use' because I'm not talking about 'standby' but actually using it to play games etc.
Come back in about 10 years or so and we might have managed to do that.
But it's not feasable right now - not in any usable sense that you want it for.

Status: offline 		Why not pay off the rest of your bills first then get a decent sock saved up for a rainy day.
Btw.. to me a decent sock is 1-3 month of expenses.

Then worry about trying to save up for something like a laptop.
You can do online or in store comparisons for things like memory, battery, cost, ect.

I will say that on my HP laptop, my battery life was amazing.

Status: offline 		Whatever laptop you do get, take some time and check to see how old it is. Even NIB units sometimes can sit for a year or more, and may have even older components inside (such as batteries). And whatever the manufacturer claims is battery life, automatically assume on 75%. I don't know how they calculate it, but their claims never seem to be my reality.

And remember to run that battery down all the way after the first charge so the battery doesn't develop a "memory" of being charged up too soon. I won't offer you any advice on external HDs because I have never used one before. 1TB is a lotta storage space, though, you may not need an external when it comes down to it.

Status: offline 		Laptop models I've no idea which ones have worse drains, though gaming will use more power generally.

You can get external batteries up to 115Wh, they can be clunky but can give you up to 10 extra hours use if you're nowhere near a socket.

You can also get high capacity laptop batteries as well if you don't fancy the extra unit, compatibility can be a bitch though as most of these units are made by third party manufacturers and the brand names do all they can to prevent their use.

Batteries above 100Wh you might have trouble flying with as they're classed as fully regulated Dangerous Goods. Probably not a problem for you but worth considering.

Basically for batteries the mAh/Wh represents the capacity, the higher that is the longer it lasts between charges.
