Imho the word "true" only comes into play when someone is trying to make him-/herself stand out.
Fakes might insist on being "true" while lifetime practitioners might be more laid back seing the whole picture.
It's all in the match, everyone is different.

True BDSMer have fifteen inch penises, true science fiction fans have all the seasons of Star Trek on blue ray, true Wiccans are initiated into a Coven, true Goths do not shop at hot topic, true fantasy fans love these books but not these and the list go on and on and on, and always what is being said is, I do this and this and this and to feel special and superior this is the true and right way to do it so everyone else are fake.

A true BDSMer is anyone who would fit into this huge umbrella term, do you like a bit of spanking during sex, then you are a BDSMer, do you like to cyber with someone that you tie them up you are a BDSMer, if you live a 24/7 Master/slave life then you are a BDSMer, if you like to have your tits nailed to a board you are a BDSMer. If you identify as a BDSMer you pretty much are, it is not exclusive club. Now you can look at people and ask if they are honest, if their goal is just to get off and so on but then it is their personality that is dishonest, they are still into BDSM since they are posting here so they are BDSMers.
