See, I could see protesting the music of the national anthem, since it has to be one of the worst pieces of music ever to grace a national anthem, they should have asked Duke Ellington or George Gershwin to write better music for it...they literally grafted Key's poem onto an old British drinking song called "Ode to Anachreon", we can do better than that......
As far as those calling the kid names, not a big surprise, there are a lot of idiots in this country who fear what the country is becoming, and hate anything that doesn't look like them. Yeah, I am sure there are some blacks who might have said things about the kid, or asians, or whatever, maybe even fellow hispanics for all I know, but I would bet pretty good money well over 95% of those writing those horrible things are white.....
As far as right wingers being racist, I think that is a broad term to use, there are plenty of conservatives who are not racist.....but unfortunately, politically, that is the reality of who has been dominating the conversation. John McCain is not racist, and he went out of his way to bash the intolerance he saw, and also has spoken out about the way the GOP has used race, as has Jeb Bush and even his brother; from the GOP's "Southern Strategy", to Reagan kicking off his campaign in Philadelphia, Miss with a paen to "States Rights" (which was a big code word during the civil rights movement of resisting the end of Jim Crowe) and speeches about 'welfare queens driving cadillacs" (nice little side comment, given that in common perceptions Blacks at the time were generally perceived as being 'cadillac' people, so guess the implication), to the Willie Horton ads, to the tea party with their idea that if we simply starve social programs, the milk and honey will flow, to the anti immigration sentiment that has made the GOP poison to most hispanics, and it ads up to a party that may not be racist per se, but is using the racist nature of a lot of its base in its strategy, and it is killing them. Both Barry Goldwater and Buckley warned against this shift in the GOP, and what they predicted has come true. Put it this way, the GOP convention looked like the GOP convention C 1956, it was almost entirely all white, and the only difference was in 1956 it would have been whites from the Northeast, Midwest and California, whereas today it would be the South and the Farm belt, almost a flip flop.
