Focus,

I was just wondering whether you'd noticed that the women here, particularly, gang up on someone at a particular time of the month. I've never noticed such a thing myself, I should say. And since I still have some fondness for my life, I probably won't notice it in the future, either.

I hear head injuries can cause memory loss.

Sometimes newbies think we know things and we dont.If I were going to guess, at some point it must get annoying to watch us post questions asked a million times,or biased scenarios where we have put ourselves in obviously inideal positions. Idk. It can sting when your nose is tubbed in your mess. That being said, it seems to be what you do with what regulars say. If you fly off the handle you deserve yo get hit with the pan.
we ask advice in most of these referenced threads.I guess to me it is silly to blame people for giving what you asked for.
I make a ton of mistakes.I get that im counting on these peope, who owe me nothing,to say "mary no" or "mary read this".I owe them. Some newbies are Imo getting it confused.

I think the issue is that since newbies are new and don't know a lot about the lifestyle, if people pile on or "gang up" on them, a good portion of them will tend to stay away.

You seem to be pretty thick-skinned and that's terrific but how many newbies could benefit from some of the topics discussed here (about physical or emotional abuse/damage for example) that they will never see because a bunch of jaded, self-righteous people have decided that those newbies are worthy of some sort of "hazing", when they ask a question that we've seen before?

For the record, I don't think C³ has weekly meetings and a thought-out plan (the latter might be a nice idea). What I see happening is one of the "anointed ones" decides to "attack" a newbie, it's like putting chum in the water when sharks are around and then comes the "tag alongs", looking to "be part of the group".

It is human nature to want to fit in; to assimilate. Wouldn't it be nice, though, if we remembered that some of the people that come to us as newbies are seeking advice that might just save them some heartache and grief (or might seek that advice, later on, if they're not driven off by some of the tackier behavior that's exhibited here, frequently) and we act accordingly, showing a bit of compassion and welcoming them with understanding instead of driving them away.

We get the community we build and we build it, actively or by standing by, when others are doing things that may be detrimental to the community, at large.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Its not what is said... its often how its said.

Unfortunately, even the regulars tend to forget that sometimes.

kiwisub12 -> RE: Mob Mentality (6/16/2013 6:29:53 AM)

Perhaps we have the community we have within cm right now because of the posters. I don't see that telling people when they are being stupid or attention seeking is being detrimental to the community at large. In fact, when my kids were teenagers, I did that quite regularly as part of raising them to be responsible intelligent human beings. Consider it as my way of trying to raise the intelligence level of cm posters. and you are welcome!

First; kia ora. Tene kotau?

As long as you're going to "bring these newbies up" to what YOU consider to be the correct standard, I guess all will be well.

Haha oh make no mistake, I have very thin skin. When my thread turned quickly into what I did not want to hear, it hurt. BUT were they wrong? No. You have to be willing to accept reproach. That is the difference.

Ah ............. excuse me! I am the one true way and standard for raising newbies into kink.

well ............. actually, I think my onetruewayism is diluted by everyone elses onetruewayism, so probably newbie posters aren't too skewed towards what I consider "the One way". It's bad, but there isn't any way that I can fix that without banning every other poster - which pretty much negates the whole idea of a forum.

Kudos to you for "getting" it. You will enjoy your time here possibly more than some newbies because you are more intelligent, self aware of your own and other's behavior and have a sense of humor and open attitude.

I consider this place a microcosm of the real world, and I don't expect rainbow and flowers, I expect an honest sharing of information, humor and arguments.

And yes, if someone does not appreciate the advice given and reacts like a baby about it, it is perfectly legit for snark to happen.

This whole mob mentality bullshit works both ways. On FL there are tons of threads where people are overly supportive to posts that a child could have written, it gives me insulin shock.

On one thread on FL, an OP said she was proud to be a slut and then questioned why some of her "friends" she had sex with did not call her back or what to keep a friendship.

I was the lone voice who said, wait, you are surprised by this? And everyone yelled at me for not being supportive to the OP.

I give my honest opinion and tell it like it is.

The only people I need to satisfy here are the Mods and me.

I think Tazzygirl is right, this whole thing is personal for you.

I have never seen you this active.

Having a lot of attention is fun, right?

Attention?

Let's see, I once started a topic in "Ask a Mistress" called "Dommes and Doggie Sex".

In the fat threads, I've said how I'm not attracted to BBW's.

Had plenty to say to and about American gun-humpers over in P & R. (lol, the spell-check is suggesting gun 'hummers')

And in 9 years of predominantly coming to CM for the discussion forums, you've got double my posts in less time and tazzy's got 5 times yours again.

"Active" is relative - a matter of whether the boards have interesting topics. And I have phases where they simply don't, IMO. I also have the rare ability to 'X' out of a topic just because I've got nothing to add to the discussion.

And this "personal" bizzo, yeah, I don't like bullies and never have. I'm also familiar with and been the target of mob feeding frenzies on Internet Forums - here, bondage.com and the old bdsm-online. I'm not a turner of the other cheek and I won't run. And when 10 different posters have a dig at me, I don't feel obliged to type 10 replies to their individual one.
So yeah, there was a time when getting mobbed was stressful. You tell yourself how illogical that stress is since you only hafta switch off the screen and it's gone. But the logic is flawed - it's the damned mirror I can't switch off.

I've been at it too long for any mob pile-on to get to me. But that's not to say I don't have some empathy for newbie's getting subjected to it. As I said in one of those other threads, sites like CM grow and thrive on the back of their ability to attract new blood, not by becoming an elitist club of old stagers where any newbie better walk softly and generally keep their mouth shut.

Me, as long as ol' mate in the mirror says I'm within my own principles, conscience and beliefs etc, the biggest, loudest, most viral Internet mob is only firing blanks. Good luck to 'em with that.

Focus.

Not necessary to address them individually, because bitter, mean spirited, and hateful knows when its being called out. One post fits all. IF one has good intentions, they should feel no guilt.
Mob mentality is a pretty big term to use to for what happens sometimes, cliquey is probably more accurate. IF you sistas are feeling some loyalty and power in that kind of grouping, then keep spreading the love. (am I being sarcastic? maybe a tiny teeny bit) lol.

If your term "sistas", which I find offensive, refers to all the women who post with honesty, bluntness and no tolerance for whiny babies who cannot take replies that do not mirror their own perceptions, then your post is as ludicrous as the many overblown posts addressing mob mentality. I don't feel power or loyalty by posting, I am fine with my power in my real life and my loyalty is reserved for my family and real life friends who know me.

Additionally, how do you infer that anyone is bitter, mean spirited, hateful and guilty because they post?

I don't understand comments like yours....unless it is because of your own experiences with the forum, which like many others, even on this very thread, left you so scarred and unable to move on from being flamed, that you feel it necessary to jump on the "clique" bandwagon.

Ironic, isn't it?

Lol, I think "clique" was the first collective term I used in the "Need Advice ASAP" thread. Which was probably my contribution to ramping up the rage.... [8|] Then I suggested "bandwagon" but finally settled for "mob" as being appropriate to where things had degenerated to.

This "scenario" is that hypothetical? And if I go back and have a closer look at it, chances are it's not gonna be some "black & white" no-brainer? Or that you'll then increase the intrigue by making two of the participants brother and sister, but they don't know they are?

And when I skip through all these hoops to your satisfaction, I'll hafta refer to you as "Mistress" for the rest of my CM life? And I'll be "Hey, you!", or "bitch"? I suspect if I go look in the mirror right now, I'm gonna see all the faces of all the subs I've ever made do something they weren't so keen on.

Yeah, I remember the Dommes and doggie sex thread. Something I mentioned there/then that I have said many times in other threads since. There are some folks, like Me, who are going to feel topics about their own sex lives too intimate and actually think them kind of rude. Some newer folks don't get that when coming to CM and thinking it's one big discussion of sex and don't get it when questions of that nature aren't received well. Any version of 'how do you like to fuck' or any version thereof isn't a question I'm going to answer at My local munch, either. I'm only likely to do it when there is a certain amount of familiarity with the person who has asked.

Maybe it's because I'm a prude or that I'm old fashioned. I just honestly don't have that many guys who walk up to Me on the street or at a kink party and ask Me about My sex life. Some people think that it's different because it's the net. I don't honestly feel that way.

quote:

And in 9 years of predominantly coming to CM for the discussion forums, you've got double my posts in less time and tazzy's got 5 times yours again.

Which has what to do with it? Those of us who have or had crazy ass work schedules do post more often, particularly when it comes to night schedules. When insomnia hits Me, I post more. It's actually doubled because of being up through the night and dragging the next day because I'm trying to get My sleep schedule turned around. I say the same thing about it being the exact reason why I have a WOW account.

quote:

That part, I actually agree with. There are actually more topics that I'd rather even not mess with these days. Often, thread drift, such as the two example being sited in this thread, are more interesting than the original. "Why doesn't Master call anymore" happens to be one of them.

This part actually still surprises Me for some reason. I'm still at a loss to figure out how this works for you. I've never really taken you for the type that would be more concerned about telling people they are wrong when they are voicing their disagreement with unethical actions than you would be about cheating in a monogamous relationship. There's just something about it that doesn't make sense. I really don't see you as the type of person who would condone that behavior or that you'd be real big on lies in general. Not that it matters much on your end but I'd be somewhat disappointed to think I had been wrong on that.

I've been saying this on a lot of threads lately. The "grow and thrive" argument is a complete strawman when it comes in relation specifically to the site. This place achieves growth no matter what happens here. Have you ever looked to see just how many people join this site every day? The numbers probably aren't as high for your country than it is here in the US and you can't do a tally for all countries at once, but even the US alone it's hundreds in any 24 hour period. Try checking it out for yourself. Clear your search parameters, set them to "all" with the US as the country, and count how many folks create a screen name here on any given day.

Also, the same thing that you're calling mob mentality, or clique, or whatever other terms you've used to attempt shaming people on it about is nothing new and it's nothing that has ever dropped the site into devastation before. I don't bookmark many of My own threads, but I keep this one just to show people that the doom and gloom about the clique isn't anything that's ripped the site to shreds before. It's roughly three years old. http://www.collarchat.com/fb.asp?m=3365406&key=clique

Not an issue, man. However, I don't exactly see you reserving your opinion entirely on things that you think are "wrong". The gun debate happens to be one of those things for you. Fair enough. For Me, cheating is one of those things. Dishonesty is one of those things where people make a conscientious choice to do right or wrong. I'm not cool with looking the person in the mirror if I don't call it where I see it.
