In alphabetical order- only one may exist in this world- which will you vote for.

Definitely a cat. They're cuddly, cute, and they're not near as needy.

lizi -> RE: cats or dogs- pick one (6/15/2013 11:21:17 AM)

Cats.

I like dogs, but they are too much work, and I don't really "get" them on a basic companionship level. I need high levels of isolation and disdain in my life, lol.

Cats [:)]

ResidentSadist -> RE: cats or dogs- pick one (6/15/2013 3:37:31 PM)

Cats can't lead the blind or help the handicapped.
Cats can't help you hunt and flush out prey.
Cats don't warm your feet.
Cats don't scare off burglars for you . . . I never heard of a guard cat.
Cats don't herd your livestock.
Cats don't star in porno movies.
Cats don't fetch. I never had a cat bring me my slippers or fetch a duck from the pond while hunting.
Cats won't go to war with you . . . I never heard of the "cats if war".

Dogs have been "man's best friend" for thousands of years.
Dogs were the first domesticated pet.
Dogs read emotion on your face and like people, they look to right side of your face to understand it best.
Dogs are smarter than monkeys at some human interactions. They understand pointing and monkeys don't.
Humans speak dog and generally recognize six types of barks.
Dogs demonstrate abstract thinking.
One dog knows over 300 words.
A dog will face death in the eye and try to tear out its throat while fighting at your side.

Real story, my Great Dane saved my life in Detroit. My slave accidentally walked into a store that was being robbed. I went in to save her and got caught in the doorway by the gunman. My car was by the door with my Great Dane in it. When the gunman put the shotgun to my face, the dog barked trying to get out and attack. They gunman turned to look for the attacking dog because humans speak dog and recognize the different types of barks, including my dog's "I'm gonna' rip out your throat bark", so understandably he turned and looked behind him while trying to shoot my head off. When he turned I ducked and grabbed for the gun as the shot went off. The shot hit the brick wall next to my face. I still have scars on my cheek from the ricochet and brick fragments. Because I grabbed for the gun, the robber was freaked out by me and the GIANT 125lb ferocious dog trying to break through the glass window in the car and attack him. All you could see was big snapping teeth against the window and hear the thumping as the dog hammered against the glass while snarling and barking. It sounded like the window was gonna' break. Surprised and freaked out, the gunman fled.

So my dog saved my life. To finish the story, I found my slave laying on the floor next to the pickles, which was what we went there to get in the first place. She was all cut up by the broken glass from pickle jars the gun fight between the robber and the clerk had broken, but she was OK. I helped her up and checked the cuts on her knees. I looked for the clerk and found him behind the bullet proof glass, with pistol in hand. His bullet proof glass had a couple large 12 gauge holes through it where the gunman was trying to shoot him behind the counter. I asked if he was OK. He said he was fine, that he knew the gunman who was from the neighborhood and this had been going on for about 10 minutes before my slave accidentally walked into the middle of it. He said police were on the way. So I left. We were both bleeding, but alive and well. Went home to lick our wounds. The dog was thrilled to see us get in the car but really wanted to get out and chase after the gunman. When we got home and the dog saw there was no chance of chasing the gunman, we were lavished with doggy affections. Love that dog. If I had fucking cat in the car, I wouldn't be here today to write this and who know what would have happened to my slave or the clerk.

I am from Detroit originally, I personally know a dozen real life dog stories about a dogs saving someone like taking a bullet for its owner or breaking off some teeth in burglar's ass and those were just house pets, not guard dogs. Working dogs lead the blind and help the handicapped. Police dogs save criminals lives by practicing none lethal attacks on forearms or legs. Military dogs save lives, some even sniff out landmines. Rescue dogs, hunting dogs, guard dogs and etc. Dogs have been working alongside mankind for thousands of years and are part of the pack, part of the family. You can't get that from a cat, no matter how many dead rats or birds it drops at your feet in homage.

If you gotta' choose, fuck a bunch of useless cats . . .

The most informative documentary video about dogs I have ever seen is -=Dogs Decoded=-
The video is reaffirming and will explain the science behind all those things you know and love about dogs being so tightly bonded to humans.

DOGS

pahunkboy -> RE: cats or dogs- pick one (6/15/2013 4:00:07 PM)

I run a cat page- and cats do save lives.

http://carca.ca/ you can find one such group here

Don't be silly trying to make some really rare exception a validation for the breed. That is NOT standard cat behavior. Oh, cats have their uses, like in hospice people like to pet them while they are dying. Other than that and catching rats, there is no "working cat".

I am sure someone's guinea pig squeaks woke them up and saved everyone from a fire. But that is a rare exception. There ain't no guinea pigs leading the blind or rescuing humans as their stock and trade. Same is true for cats . . . nope, no rescue cat training courses they graduate from and work with government agencies. You realize, dogs go to school and get fucking diplomas certifying them for work. Then they get a job and go to work. That's better than some people's kids I hear about.

So take your cat thread and enjoy all the cuddly wuddly BS. Admit your are a sucker for the fur and became a submissive who's purpose is to feed a useless cat and clean up their shit after them because of the emotional rewards, not because cats are working breed that benefit mankind. You can't sell that to me.

So then it is ok for dogs to bark for hours on end? Ruining the peace and quiet of the neighborhood.

This is one time that I agree with Sharia law- Muslims dont like dogs.

Cats all the way [:D]

littlewonder -> RE: cats or dogs- pick one (6/15/2013 5:17:52 PM)

A cat that doesn't make me sneeze, eyes itch and just feel downright lousy.

ResidentSadist -> RE: cats or dogs- pick one (6/15/2013 5:31:45 PM)

OK, you are the one that asked us to choose, don't get pissed off that you started a gun fight while carrying a knife. Seriously, I didn't go into it because every cat lover on these forums would explode but lets look at your CARCA link that backfired and proves my point, cats aren't a working breed and they are useless. If God had to push a button and wipe out a species, mankind would suffer if we lost dogs but nothing would change if we lost cats. . . . and seriously, cats don't rescue people, it's not in their nature, your link proves it and I quote:

In 2008, Steve convinced a small group of ski patrollers begin the first CARCA training session. After months of frustration, ridicule and many hundreds of small lacerations, all but Steve have given up.
* See, you can't fucking teach a cat to do what is not in its nature

Steve and Tim have recently been successful in rescuing a live avalanche victim.
* All these years and they recued one guy. Like I said, rare exceptions do NOT represent a breed trait. All those people giving up on cats as rescue animals, there is trend there, a trait. One nut job and a cat get lucky once, not a trait . . . & years trying to sell cats as recuse animals and only one rescue! Man those numbers really hurt your argument about cats being a working animal.

Hoping to build on the momentum generated by this historic event, Steve hopes to expand the CARCA program
* And to build that program they opened applications in April of 2012, By April of 2013, they had 5 replies and 4 promised to get involved. So in all the world, there is Steve, his cat and 4 other dudes that think cats are worth a go as a rescue animal. Again, those numbers speak against the breed, not for it.

* So I wanted to see if those chilly kitties get certified, but alas, there are no cats other than Steve's and CARCA (Canadian Avalanche Rescue Cat Association) is no more than just some guy who started a an unincorporated volunteer group . . . that has no membership and the only thing they do is scam cat lovers into buying pro cat products, like back packs and T-shirts that give the impression cats are a working breed with slogans like:

Help Cats Save Lives - How? By being right sexy in a CARCA t-shirt, that's how.

One guy, one cat, one life. What a crock of shit you tried to hand me and I am not buying it one bit. Seriously? Some guy named Steve that likes seeing cats in back packs and sells T-shirts don't make a working breed.

So you started it by asking us to choose. Well, "Service Dogs Save Lives" cats don't. I choose the one that benefits mankind.

I mean if you really wanted to defend cats usefulness, you should point out how if God did a repo on cats, there would be a shortage of violin strings and tennis rackets. Now that is how cats impact mankind in a useful way. . . . and the jobs in the cat food industry. And the jobs at the pound because someone has to euthanize them because you can't even give a fucking cat away for free.

jlf1961 -> RE: cats or dogs- pick one (6/15/2013 5:34:27 PM)

Show me one cat that can open the door to the fridge, get a beer and bring it to you! My dogs actually get me either a bottle of water, or a bottle of herbal tea, I dont drink beer, whiskey and water is my preferred drink.

Of course, my dog Princess is a little sneak.

We had a break in here a year or so ago, and I found the intruder hiding in a closet because Princess had chased him there. For some reason none of my dogs bark or raise hell when a stranger comes up to the house, but let one of the family go somewhere and return and all of em howl like there is no tomorrow.

KMsAngel -> RE: cats or dogs- pick one (6/15/2013 5:43:22 PM)

only dog i've ever had was an akita. intimidating as hell, but a pussycat. let someone burgle my house, though.

being a responsible pet owner, i mostly live in the city, and it's difficult to keep a dog humanely in the city. unless you have enough time to walk, run, take it out to the country regularly.

so i'm for cats, though i'm currently catless (i also don't currently live in a place suitable for cats)

subcj44 -> RE: cats or dogs- pick one (6/15/2013 5:46:34 PM)

I am an animal lover. I have cats simply because they are easier to care for than a dog and I can go away for the weekend without much worry or having someone drop by several times to take them out.

This doesn't make me love dogs less, actually whenever I amaround a sweet dog, I spend the next 2-3 days reminding myself why I choose not to have one. [:)]

I had a german sheppard- the shedding was too much- the cat I have is special- she does not shed

jlf1961 -> RE: cats or dogs- pick one (6/15/2013 5:54:00 PM)

My dogs shed. I deal with it.

My sister has four cats, all long haired and all shed more than all of my dogs put together.

I also live in the country.

Now I challenge you to do one simple thing. Train a cat to trail and tree a raccoon, a panther, or trail and deal with a wild hog.

Actually, train a cat to obey simple commands, to go to the fridge and bring you a cold drink.

Duskypearls -> RE: cats or dogs- pick one (6/15/2013 6:00:12 PM)

Cats....hands down.

I think Winston Churchill said it all:

I like pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals.

pahunkboy -> RE: cats or dogs- pick one (6/15/2013 6:02:50 PM)

Ok- interesting comments- consider that cats were helpful in fighting off the plague. Alot of people were wiped out by the plaque.
