I think the difference is, many men choose dogs because they see them as useful to them in some way.

Most women choose cats because they're cute and fun.

So imo that's really the only difference. It's not between cats and dogs. It's the personalities of the people who decide which one to choose.

I choose dogs because I don't really have any use for a dog and my life is too busy for one. I like cats because they're cute and do funny things and happiness is more important in my life than usefulness.

Ok- interesting comments- consider that cats were helpful in fighting off the plague. Alot of people were wiped out by the plaque.

Cats, during that period in history were still considered to be evil, and the minions of witches. They helped fight the plague because they were hungry.

Dogs.

During a drought one year, the bears were coming down from the mountain and one tried to break into the house to get to food. My golden retriever who was petrified of bears rose to the occasion. She didn't barked, she growled and threw herself at the door the bear was trying to break in. She drove him off.

And after, she still wouldn't go out to pee until the bear scent dissipated.

Dogs have their place, no doubt. I will always miss Tyson (my Doberman) and Max (my Golden Retriever), but like all domesticated animals, they have their upsides and downsides. Live in a rough part of town or out in the sticks? I'm a dog lover all the way-hands down, their senses and loyalty are why we domesticated them. But they are a labor-intensive choice-ensuring they have proper nutrition, exercise, and training so they don't become a weight around your neck.

Cats are the better choice for a pet for the pure joy of owning a pet (although a cat may argue who owns who). Aside from the litterbox and proper feeding issue, they're a low-stress animal to possess. I had a cat for 17 years, and I never regretted it. When I got Tyson, they became best buds-used to chase each other through the house playing tag), and until he died, Highway though he was a Dobie- he'd go to the door whenever anyone came over and would've have barked if he could.

At this moment in time, in the unlikely chance I choose to get another pet, it'd be a cat. Mainly for the independence as well as vermin control. And in the words of Amy Farrah Fowler: "They're delightfully indifferent".

Cats can't lead the blind or help the handicapped.

depends on your definition of helping the handicapped...

They do!!! At least mine do all the time[:)]

Cats don't fetch. I never had a cat bring me my slippers or fetch a duck from the pond while hunting."

My previous cat Cesar did fetch crumbled pieces of paper [:)]

Oh believe me, my life is a constant battle and they are with me...that surely counts[:)]

I like both, but I'm definitely a dog person.

Also RS...knowing how well my cat sniffs her addictive treats, I'm sure she could be trained to sniff out drugs on airports, too...
