The ACA is for the uninsured, I have great insurance and will not be participating, nor will anyone else who has good coverage either from an employer or as an individual.

The ACA does a lot more than just cover the uninsured.

Congress and the White House have been exempt from the workplace laws they pass for quite some time, now. This is much ado about nothing. It's "dog bites man"

Peace and comfort,

Michael

By all means, but it's what it doesn't do that I was pointing out.

because some people are hypochondriacs and go to the dr- call the ambulance, use the ER - over any little thing. They are clogging the system for those who actually need it. This is why it can be a 5 hour wait in an emergency room.

There is truth here. It is often simply common sense to figure out what is an emergency, and what can be taken care of by a normal visit to your PCP.

erieangel -> RE: I never really thought the Affordable health care act was perfect, but.... (6/16/2013 7:08:03 AM)

And some people, particularly the uninsured, do not have a PCP. So, when they get sick, even with a minor cold or stomach virus, they are in the emergency rooms where they have to by law, be seen.

Oh, and my son's last emergency room visit resulted in a 3 day hospital stay. He'd been having digestive problems. An upper and lower GI revealed a cyst and we are still awaiting the biopsy results.

And you have a medical degree from............

Raiikun -> RE: I never really thought the Affordable health care act was perfect, but.... (6/16/2013 7:25:07 AM)

Ad hominem.

tazzygirl -> RE: I never really thought the Affordable health care act was perfect, but.... (6/16/2013 7:31:36 AM)

Hardly. You assume, because of what pahunk said, that these people waiting in an er are there because they dont need to be. Show me the proof. Unless you work in the trenches, you have none.

Still an ad hominem with a touch of straw man.

tazzygirl -> RE: I never really thought the Affordable health care act was perfect, but.... (6/16/2013 7:41:22 AM)

LOL You wished. Pony up the proof. pahunk couldnt. Maybe you could do better.

Raiikun -> RE: I never really thought the Affordable health care act was perfect, but.... (6/16/2013 7:44:36 AM)

It doesn't take a medical degree to know a runny nose and cough can be taken care of by visiting your PCP. Yet I have seen people go to the ER for less, family included.

And those were factually logical fallacies. My wish is actually that you quit using them, making your "You wish" another straw man.

Do you know that a cough can actually be whooping cough in a young child? Which is quite, quite serious.

It can also be caused by pneumonia in all ages.

Bronchitis.. Respiratory syncytial virus?

Many causes that require medical attention.

And not everyone has a PCP. Should they just stay home until they can afford one?

Which a PCP can determine.

Cherry picking the worst possibilities of a symptom does not invalidate the fact that said symptom can often be treated without going to the ER. That is an awful weak rebuttal to pahunk's claim.

tazzygirl -> RE: I never really thought the Affordable health care act was perfect, but.... (6/16/2013 7:51:33 AM)

Which many do not have a PCP.

Again, do you expect them to stay at home until they can afford one?

Raiikun -> RE: I never really thought the Affordable health care act was perfect, but.... (6/16/2013 7:52:51 AM)

Different issue.

tazzygirl -> RE: I never really thought the Affordable health care act was perfect, but.... (6/16/2013 7:54:38 AM)

Not at all. He claimed they were nonserious issues. I consider all of them serious. Nonserious to me would be a splinter. Because you dont know the patients health history (someone with a transplant would definitely need to go to an ER if they had a cold), financial abilities to pay, or even the conditions they live in would all determine if their symptoms need to be checked by a medical professional or not.

Raiikun -> RE: I never really thought the Affordable health care act was perfect, but.... (6/16/2013 7:57:48 AM)

And my point is simply that serious doesn't necessarily mean 'emergency', and more often than not, isn't.

Any other point ranges far afield from my stance in this thread.

And ER's dont have to treat nonserious situations. You are aware of that, yes? They can be told to go home, did you know that? Referred to a PCP if the patient doesnt have one, yes? But they do have to be triaged. You know, assessed, by a medical personal, to determine if the situation is serious enough to be treated in the ER.

Raiikun -> RE: I never really thought the Affordable health care act was perfect, but.... (6/16/2013 8:05:20 AM)

Of course none of that refutes my point.

Lucylastic -> RE: I never really thought the Affordable health care act was perfect, but.... (6/16/2013 8:05:59 AM)

I woke up one morning with numbness in my face and bad eyes, I went to my doctor, who sent me immediately to the ER, where they sat me down for threee hours, apart from my face, I looked completely normal, no fever, nothing. I had bells palsy. and ended up having a cat scan And I live in canada, where my health care is socialised...
Another time he sent me to emerg for walking pneumonia,
the fact that emerg can get stuff done faster than booking an appointment for tests is another reason people go.
People ASSume for all kinds of reasons, and are blooody ignorant 99% of the time
