I would think those cards are for the landlords as Section 8 pays their part directly to the landlord and not the tenants.

jlf1961 -> RE: Something people actually should be outraged about (6/17/2013 10:10:33 PM)

I dont know about these payroll debit cards, but I do donate plasma twice a week, and a couple of years ago, CSL switched from cash payments to debit cards.

Credit and debit purchases are free on the day of donation, any other time, the debit purchase costs 50 cents, and the credit purchase costs 25 cents.

The cards are citibank cards, and cash withdrawals at a citibank ATM is $2, and other ATM it is that 2 dollars and whatever fee the bank operating the ATM decides to charge.

Now since I dont donate to supplement my income, unlike the majority of clients locally, I just use it to get incidentals, like extra smokes, maybe a pepsi, and the majority of the time, buy Damian a toy or clothes. (Damian's dad is 6'7, Damian is 16 months and is wearing 24months clothes, since anything smaller than 18 months is too freaking short. I think someone is slipping miracle grow for humans in his bottles and food)

As for the payroll cards, a few fast food chains here use them, and strangely have a very high turnover, due to the fact the bank that services the cards does not have any branches in town, the nearest one is in Weatherford, about 2 hours from here.

A couple of other fast food franchises went a different route, the give the employees the option of setting up a bank account at the bank the franchise uses, and then does direct deposit, if they do not want to do that, they have the option for a walmart green dot card which has no fees at any walmart or sam's club for cash withdrawals and no fees for purchases or bill paying.

no, i looked it up, the landlord gets that section 8 rent money direct deposit and then a recpt sent in the mail and these cards are for the tenants for Utility Stipend assistance payments..

tazzygirl -> RE: Something people actually should be outraged about (6/17/2013 10:35:30 PM)

Ohhhhhhhhhhh ok.

Housing Assistance Payment (HAP)
„ RRHA’s share of the Contract Rent, sent directly to landlord or agent monthly, typically about 30% of adjusted gross income after allowable deductions

„ Utility Assistance Payment (UAP)„ Sent monthly directly to some extremely Low income or $0 income families to assist with utility cost determined by HUD calculation method

Rent goes straight to the landlord... UAP pays utilities. It always tickles me when people claim Section 8 gives free housing.

Would you conclude the chase conspired to arrange this set up?

Would you conclude that centralized power/decision making was a wonderful thing- in this happenstance?

I feel the banking executive crowd and senior traders are truly capitalist whores. However, down on the street level it is much better. For admittedly a small depositor too because I just opened a new account at Chase without a hitch, she was accommodating, no minimum balance, small fee on checking, larger on strictly debit card. I am leaving Suntrust that has insulted my intelligence and cost me a little.

Are banks too entangled ? Yes.

Does govt. need to re-regulate ? Yes

Do we need to break up the big ones ? Yes

...and so on.

The centralized power comes from the fact that by far most of the business and govt. elites all come from the same schools, the same employers, the same banks, the same think tanks and these same groups. All have the same long term goals...the defeat of democracy, they say so and dare us to stop them.

DaddySatyr -> RE: Something people actually should be outraged about (6/17/2013 11:25:37 PM)

My Chase checking account is no minimum balance and no fees but I've been banking with them for 49 years so ...

erieangel -> RE: Something people actually should be outraged about (6/17/2013 11:27:12 PM)

This started with unemployment being put on these stupid prepaid cards. In some states, people are being charged 1/3 of their unemployment funds just to access their money.

And what welfare dollars are still available to single mothers, etc., are also on a prepaid card. In PA, those cards are through Chase Bank (I believe). Oh, and food stamps and medical assistance is on the same cards. The cards are made flimsy, the electronic strips last only about 6 months though I've seen them wear out in a matter of weeks and many people are charged $3.00 for new cards. I'm convinced the bank is paid not by the # of people on assistance but by the number of cards they issue.

BTW, when the cards first came out during the Clinton administration, PA contracted with a debit card maker but issued and controlled them on their own. Those cards were made so well that my son still has his and it still works on most credit card machines, though once in a while a cashier has to type in the numbers.

jlf1961 -> RE: Something people actually should be outraged about (6/17/2013 11:35:36 PM)

I deal with citibank. No fees on my account if I have direct deposit and make one payment from the account page on the bank's website.

I have been with them so long that I keep getting offers for citibank credit cards with larger and larger lines of credit and very reasonable fees and interest. I also have a shitload of citi rewards points so I get nice letters saying I can cash them in for airline tickets, cash, or convert them to cash and start an investment account.

My brother in law had me get a walmart greendot card because if he has to transfer money for the house while he and my sis are on the road. He uses a bank based in florida, has since his parents moved there and he got out of the air force, and he does not like to transfer money from his account to mine, since he is charged by his bank to do so, and it takes a couple of days to process.

My daughter works for one of the restaurants that pay with the debit card, which she complains about.

However she refuses to get a bank account, which her employer would do direct deposit.

The charge is only if they lose them. If they stop working, its a free replacement.

jlf1961 -> RE: Something people actually should be outraged about (6/18/2013 12:12:58 AM)

Tazzy, would you quit doing research and posting facts to counter some of the arguments! It annoys some people.

Personally, I am waiting for some of the aluminum foil hat crowd to build some conspiracy theory concerning this situation.

Considering the cost savings for state agencies to switch to these card rather than print paper checks, I can see why they do it, same with employers.

However I know that some banks servicing the cards can get a little carried away.

Now since the blank cards are made by the same companies that make regular credit or debit cards, with the same quality control, the stories of them being poorly made seems a bit of a red herring.

It does not bother me, in fact I agree with your post, but you know how some of the posters are. If you post something that disagrees with them, they tend to get snippy.

Perhaps you need to learn to word your posts in such a way that even though you are clearly contradicting the statement made that you have proved wrong, to the uneducated, it will look like you are agreeing with them.

Now an even more important question, why for did you let some guy spank your butt with wet paint on his hands?

My post above was made in sarcasm. And, I really feel a need to ask why you just gave me that advice.

And its not paint... its chocolate.

Purely selfish reasons, if you learn how to do that, you can teach me how to do it, and it would prevent me from informing some people that they have an IQ equivalent to say a slime mold, or something along those lines.
.

I never learned the art and science of diplomacy, and since you are among those that continuously post intelligent comments, I figured you would learn that skill much faster than I.

I still want to know why you let someone smack your ass with a hand covered in wet paint.

Hope you are doing well, and not having any undue drama in your life, which seems to be a problem for a fair number of my friends of late, would not want you in that number.

Also, may you win the power ball drawing and be the only one with the winning numbers.

And lastly, I am trying to figure out how to send you pics of my new pup, since the only time he is still enough to get a pic, he is sleeping next to Damian.

Oh, I can. I choose not too. The bare truth is simply too delicious to sugar coat.

And chocolate is never a bad thing to have on warm, willing flesh, is it?

No drama, for the moment, thankfully. Life is sweet, in relative terms.

You havent figured out how to attach photos yet?

As far as the lottery...lol.. I told the man that would be my luck, I would win, and so would everyone else on the same drawing!

I know how to attach pics, I am just afraid since they include a 16 month old toddler, cm might get a little snippy.

FTI since Christmas he has gone from wearing 12 month outfits to wearing 24 month outfits, because anything else is too freaking short. Now his dad is 6'7, but I suspect that someone is feeding this kid miracle grow for humans. He is tall enough that I am looking for a toddler proof desk, and actually found one, for $3OOO which includes a 32 inch built in flat panel monitor.

SadistDave -> RE: Something people actually should be outraged about (6/18/2013 2:01:26 AM)

I'm not seeing much to be outraged over here. I realize that I'm probably a little "old school" about money because I prefer to deal in cash, but these folks can avoid all the fees and nonsense by simply withdrawing all of their money at once. The fees at the ATM for one or two large transactions would be about the same as cashing their checks at a grocery store. However, according to some of the comments on that article, there is no fee to cash the card out in one lump sum. If that's true, then I really don't see the issue with the card.

I'm also not quite sure about the validity of her lawsuit. According to the story in the OP, McDonalds is paying her. She has no proof at all that it will cost her extra money or that McDonalds is profiting from her payroll. They are taking no "ill-gotten gains" from her, which is what she is suing McDonalds for...

But you know... According to the article, state law says she must be given a choice to be paid in cash or by check. That would seem be pretty cut and dried, and something that could be cleared up by a call to the states Labor Board in about 30 seconds. This is precisely the sort of thing that agency is there to deal with. The lawsuit is bullshit and a complete waste of taxpayers time. If it turns out that the employees did not try to have the problem resolved through the labor board before filing this frivolous piece of shit, I hope they get their money-grubbing asses handed to them by the judge.

PA law is specific.

As far as pulling it all out at once, yes, they can, for a fee... 1.50 at an ATM, which may not always be safe... or 5 dollars to the teller.

And Wage comes in, does a review, and settles the matter.... for that company. Since this is a franchise, and its become corporate policy.. all their restaurants are doing this.

And, no, its not 30 seconds. There is an investigation. The guy I spoke to in the PA area who did ours told me they sometimes take a few months. There are few investigators.

Aren't Unemployment cards issued through Chase, and have the same fees?
If so why is it OK for the government to screw over the people, and not the employers?

Why should people who actually work for a fucking living have more hoops to jump thru and expenses than those who don't?

[sm=jaw.gif] Did he just say that?!?!?
