Since I brought the new set of dishes, we have been using paper plates to eat from. The new dishes have gold trim on the edges and is not microwaveable. We also try not to do so much dishes because my back starts hurting if I am standing up for too long and Mom is recovering from her broken leg.

Interesting.

We have bone china tea cups that are gold rimmed and gold on the handles.
We have tall glass coffee mugs that are also gold rimmed and gold-leaf motifs all over them.
We have several pieces of crockery that are gold rimmed.

We use all of ours quite safely in our microwave.
No sparks, no blackening.... nothing.

Maybe our microwave is one of those that are safe to use with some metals.
I know we can microwave stuff that comes in most foil containers.
We can also use tin foil (from a roll) quite happily.

I guess it depends what type of magnetron yours has in it.  [sm=dunno.gif]

I would also suggest getting yourself a dishwasher too.
It's surprising what you can get from Freecycle!!  [:)]

When ordering take out, such as we did this evening, I still feel compelled
to transfer the food from the styrofoam container to a real plate. [:-]

I do this!!!

What's worse, when I'm too tired and transferring seems like an unnecessary step, I put the container on a plate. Now, how does that make any sense?

On the rare occasions I cook, I put the food in take-out containers so that it feels more natural.

The dishwasher broke down because of the iron rich deposits in the well water. We use it for holding lids and the contact cooker. 14yo trailer house...

When I have takeout food, I bring it home and put it in our normal plates and bowls and such just because it looks nicer and gives more of a civilized look to the food. I also don't own much plastic either. It just looks and feels cheap to me and so I only have a few plastic bowls to throw leftovers in because they have lids but I usually like to use my glass bowls that have lids. I know it may seem strange but I think it has to do with growing up and being poor and everything was either plastic or paper and I hated it for the way it was just one more thing for everyone to tease us about at school for being poor.

LW, we had to be on welfare when Dad injured his back while trucking (this was in the 70s). I remember getting food stamps and after the surgery to replace some vertebrate in his lower back, he got his GED and went on to LVN school. While he worked as a nurse, this enabled Mom to go to LVN school as well. Probably had to do TANF as well. It paid the rent, allowed us to have a few head of cattle that we would either sell off or butcher so we can have fresh meat. The stamps went for canned goods, sometimes ice cream...we had a milk cow and got raw milk, made our own butter, butcher a few pigs and over 200 chickens for eggs and fried chicken...you get to have a steel stomach when you are a farm kid.

These days, I prefer to get my gizzards from Chicken Express and the ground beef is 93/7. I get boneless beef ribs for cooking in the slow cooker and beef tips out of stew meat. My aunt got us some venison when she went hunting in Arkansas. If I don't feel like cooking, I pop a meal into the microwave.

Of course we had an acre garden so we got fresh vegetables...luckily I loved beets then.
