LW, we had to be on welfare when Dad injured his back while trucking (this was in the 70s). I remember getting food stamps and after the surgery to replace some vertebrate in his lower back, he got his GED and went on to LVN school. While he worked as a nurse, this enabled Mom to go to LVN school as well. Probably had to do TANF as well. It paid the rent, allowed us to have a few head of cattle that we would either sell off or butcher so we can have fresh meat. The stamps went for canned goods, sometimes ice cream...we had a milk cow and got raw milk, made our own butter, butcher a few pigs and over 200 chickens for eggs and fried chicken...you get to have a steel stomach when you are a farm kid. These days, I prefer to get my gizzards from Chicken Express and the ground beef is 93/7. I get boneless beef ribs for cooking in the slow cooker and beef tips out of stew meat. My aunt got us some venison when she went hunting in Arkansas. If I don't feel like cooking, I pop a meal into the microwave. Of course we had an acre garden so we got fresh vegetables...luckily I loved beets then.
