Paula dean in the news for racial slurs. Not just using the N- word but referring them to wear white gloves for Bubbas wedding to get a feel for history.
Thoughts?

She was fired. As popular as she was, she will continue to be popular among some groups. But she became a liability for the people she worked for. Im not sure she will ever crawl out of this hole she dug for herself. Coupled with her public denial of her diabetes and continuing to make the rich, sugary, fattenign foods she did before.....

Hopefully she will simply disappear.

DomKen -> RE: Paula oh Paula! (6/22/2013 4:49:06 PM)

I had a real problem with her "southern" cuisine. Yes we have a tradition that includes fried food and super sweet desserts. But we also used to mostly be rural folks who worked on farms dawn to dusk and could deal with all those calories. At times she seemed to be adding butter and other calories to dishes just because she could. It became her schtick and it was dangerous for people who actually followed her recipes. In many cases you could cut out half or more of the butter and other fats in her recipes and have no impact on the recipe at all except of course that it was fewer calories.

The whole diabetes thing was just repugnant. She kept her diagnosis secret while still pitching the style of food that made her sick right up until she struck a deal to pitch a diabetes drug.

Hopefully her firing by FoodTV will also mean the end of her shows being shown on the network.

I don't see how wanting them to wear white gloves is such an awful thing to say, but the racial slur was out of line.

TNDommeK -> RE: Paula oh Paula! (6/22/2013 5:10:24 PM)

If white gloves were the attire for staff in general then no, not a problem. I agree with you there. But the context in which she used it was highly fucked up.
I wish I had a link.

White gloves.

Possibly the most dignified way to say you don't believe the waitstaff knows about soap.

Come to think of it, they may well date from a time when folks didn't. Never thought of it that way before.

Perhaps that and, if I remember, way back in the days of plantations and slavery, I could be wrong, but I do believe the dark-skinned waitstaff had to wear white gloves. If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.

Duskypearls -> RE: Paula oh Paula! (6/22/2013 5:57:09 PM)

The few times I watched her she seemed way too manic, loud and over the top. No wallflower, that one.

LittleGirlHeart -> RE: Paula oh Paula! (6/22/2013 6:24:07 PM)

one of her favorite sayings used to be a stick of butter ya'll!

Missokyst -> RE: Paula oh Paula! (6/22/2013 8:09:27 PM)

She is from the south, where that attitude was widely accepted LONG after the civil war. It is no longer PC and she is or was in the public. Eventually things said resurface.

I always longed for the day where the color of my skin did not taint the way people viewed me. I am sure all people of varying degrees of color do. But, I don't fault people for the way they were raised if they attempt to adjust to the modern world.

Totally agreed. I have so many thoughts on this. I'm not going to defend anything she said or did but I think the reactions have become worse than her original offense.

See this link: http://www.addictinginfo.org/2013/06/22/answering-the-n-word-with-the-c-word-the-paula-deen-scandal-displays-the-worst-of-the-internet/

An excerpt: "There were cases where people made offending remarks about her weight, about her diabetes, about being southern. People called for her to be hanged and lynched. People called her a “cracker,” a “honkey,” and other vulgar, racist words for whites. People called her a bigot, a racist, a bitch, all while calling her that most vile word you can call a woman– a c*nt. I won’t even spell it out, I find it so offensive. Since when did it become socially acceptable to skewer someone with the same type of ignorant language you are accusing them of using?"

The things people have called her and said about her are every bit as sickening and hateful as anything she ever said, did or insinuated. Fighting perceived racism with hate speech against the racist? Ignorance and hate at its epitome.

I could tolerate the situation if it wasn't for the part about having all the little n-----s dressed in white with white gloves part, that struck me as a pretty racist statement.

Lucky for her, give it a bit of time and she'll be back, probably on another cable channel but forgiven and working.

Now look at the people lining up in support of her in Savannah at her restaurant....think the times was making a point with their selection of pictures?

It wasn't so much the idea of having waiters wear white gloves but the idea that having black men in tuxedos and white gloves so the wedding would have a "southern plantation" theme that made it an issue.

When you accept money to become a role model, you are responsible for your words and actions.

I should have edited that to say "when one accepts or perceives that they are a role model they should be held responsible for their words and actions"

So... if you aren't accepting money and/or have no personal perception of yourself as a role model are you off the responsibility hook and can you just say whatever you think? None of those things personally apply to me. Would it be okay if I echoed Deen's statements and sentiments?
