yes a truly monumental day for those in the lgbtq community and further for all that that those who have gone before and paved the way for this to be realized should be remembered with a toast of thanks and respect

What I cant wait to see is the celebration at the gay bar tonight. Will be going to Revolution in Orlando either tonight or tomorrow night.

http://www.revolutionorlando.com/

Looks like a good time. I checked out the website and if I am not mistaken that is the same bar I used to go to when I lived there. Different name though but that was over 20 years ago. They used to do a weekly bbq that was great.

It used to be called Southern Nights, same bar.

awwwww, now I want to take a road trip and I gots no money and no time. What's a boi to do.

The American Family Association's Bryan Fischer even worried that the decisions would quickly lead to "the normalization of polygamy, pedophilia, incest and bestiality."

my god.....way to be extreme.

I actually have no problem with polygamy as long as it's between consenting adults.

I have purposely kept this out of the P&R forum as a place for those who wish to celebrate, to do so.

Personally, I am glad to see this ruling. It's high time.

Having said that, I am also for equality on all fronts. If someone started a thread to mourn the passing of the DOMA would you just as purposely protect it?

The point was not to protect the thread, but the posters that don't wish to engage in the confrontational environment in P&R.

If you wish to mourn DOMA, Tazzy has set up a thread for you: http://www.collarchat.com/m_4480455/tm.htm

"Ross Douthat worries religious objections to gay marriage will come to look like 1960s-style Southern bigotry" (source).

Exactly, Ross! It's called progress.

Although I tend to run along conservative lines most of the time, this ruling was, in my mind, a long time coming. I have no dog in this race... what consenting adults do in the privacy of their own homes is none of my damned business.

But the fact that Federal rights and privileges are being denied to American citizens strikes me as being explicitly unAmerican.

And that's not what we're about. Congratulations to all this affects.

I thought California would take a week or two, not a month as predicted by legal analysts. Holy shit, it only took 48 hours. Now that's the way to get things done eh? Read this:

"A federal appeals court says it is lifting its freeze on same-sex marriages in California and the state is required to issue licenses to gay couples starting immediately."

"The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued a brief order Friday [6/28/13] saying it's lifting the stay it imposed while a lawsuit challenging California's gay marriage ban worked its way through the courts."

"That means same-sex marriages can resume in the state for the first time since 2008."

This brings to mind one of the most moving memories of the thanksgiving service at the National Cathedral on Wednesday night.

A row or two behind me sat what I think was a straight couple. They held hands the whole time and gazed fondly at each other. They didn't seem to be with anyone else, so who knows what their stake in the DOMA decisions was? But there they were, as joyous as the rest of us. I was incredibly moved that they seemed to consider my fight theirs too.

I am working on Perry about the abortion mess (I am pro-choice in the issues of incest, rape and the health of the mother). He is threatening to close down 45 out of 47 clinics which provide wellness checks as well. The GOP just LOVES to fuck round women's reproductive rights. Ordering abortions to be performed at ambulatory clinics instead at the doctor's offices is an extra cost to the women's pockets. This will cause the increase of back alley abortions, creating the likelihood of infection and possible death.

I am also going to be working on gay marriages for the state. I know several couples who married out of state whose relationships are not recognized. Once Texas allows gay marriages, I plan to officiate them.

And yes, almost all the hysteria against gays can be traced back to religion, whether atheists are homophobes is meaningless, because the bias can be traced back to religious belief, there is no doubt on that. That said, I would be careful about claiming how the problem is Christianity or Christians as a whole; there are more then a few Christians fighting for the rights of gays to marry, I belonged to an Episcopal church that did same sex weddings and considered it fully sacramental, the Episcopal Church as a whole, the UCC, support gays rights to marry as do every Jewish tradition except the orthodox. Among Catholics, almost 60% support same sex marriage despite what their church says, and apparently vote that way, too. As far ad "In God we Trust", that came about in the 1950's along with "under God" in the pledge, a piece of mischief that was primarily promoted by the Knights of Columbus (and folks, do yourself a favor, if you ever see K of C's collecting money supposedly to support mentally retarded kids and such, walk the other way; the Knights of Columbus spent about 3 million in California supporting gettting prop 8 passed, they are extreme right wing uber Catholics and no friend to anyone who is different). In any event, there are a lot of people of faith who aren't the way you think.....and it isn't fair to paint them that way. The irony is, as an issue, homosexuality in the bible appears a couple of times, but you would think it was all Christ thought about (which he didn't, since Christ never mentioned it)....

Hey!! I used one of your quotes in my profile!

I am glad you took the time to defend the Christian side. There really are many, many fighting for the rights of gays to marry. Painting them all in the same picture is the definition of stereotype. I don't like how people who are so openly against bias and judgment can be so quick to serve it.

I just wanted to comment (because I felt so... unique? reading your post) that when I was in high school, I held atheist beliefs (my parents were Catholic but I never identified with religion in any way) and was "homophobic" at the same time. My attitudes have since changed drastically, and not always in the same direction. I assume this and similar attitudes are inconsistent and mutable in every other person. If you adhere to the same set of beliefs since adolescence, and throughout adulthood, then what could you have possibly learned? :-)

RS, you mentioned Florida. I live in the Sunshine State too. Where I live, Pinellas County recently approved "Domestic Partnership" a few months ago. Considering that just over a year ago, nowhere in the Tampa Bay area was Domestic Partnership legal. Now,the city of Tampa and Pinellas County both recognize Domestic Partnership. There are a lot of "gray areas" with that. While Domestic Partnership may be legal here in Pinellas county, those same rights are not promised outside of that persons city or town. Progress takes time but at least times are finally starting to change.

Pinellas County is slowly being dragged into the twentieth century. I lived in Manatee county for 10 years on the shore of Palma Sola Bay so I am familiar with the news in your county. I am surprised they made Domestic Partnership legal, but glad to hear it. Someone new must be rocking the boat. LOL

Thanks for the link and sharing the story. Seems like a civil church. Nice to see them take it to heart like that and have a special service. Awesome really.

I purposely left this thread out of p&R, so that people had a place to celebrate without having to deal with the quagmire that is the P&R forum.

That directive was ignored. I have removed any post that was a political debate.

If you wish to debate DOMA or same sex marriage there are threads already in place to do so in the P&R forum.

The next political debate post, gets this thread locked.
