I thought I'd steal this snippet from another thread and see how many people really think they can pick sock puppets?
I mean changing posting style and the way a person structures sentences would seem to be sock puppet 101 wouldn't it??
I think I'm pretty averagely intelligent, changing posting style, sentence structure, punctuation, turn of phrases in order to seem like someone else seems like a super easy thing to do...

ResidentSadist -> RE: Sock Puppets (6/27/2013 6:52:36 PM)

Arpig sorta' sold me on the idea that I couldn't spot a sock.

littlewonder -> RE: Sock Puppets (6/27/2013 7:35:17 PM)

I spotted Arpig pretty quickly. His girls all sounded the same and the way stuck up for them, a lot of his wording was exactly the same. I seem to be pretty good about such things.

Lucylastic -> RE: Sock Puppets (6/27/2013 7:36:15 PM)

the ones in the pits of hell(p&r) are usually pretty easy to spot

I agree.

And Lucy is right...its funny to watch the revolving accounts down in the pit.

theshytype -> RE: Sock Puppets (6/27/2013 9:08:48 PM)

It depends. I don't think one has to necessarily change their posting style, unless they have a habit of doing something unique. A few posters here have a unique way of using punctuation and, unless they changed that under their sock name, would be obvious.
I think the giveaway though is when the sock is always agreeing with the other nic or seems to have the same grudges.

jlf1961 -> RE: Sock Puppets (6/27/2013 9:18:00 PM)

I think that tazzy is a sock puppet of tazzy who is a sock puppet of a gorgeous red head who is secretly trying to control collar me through telepathy and mod manipulation.

MasterCaneman -> RE: Sock Puppets (6/27/2013 9:28:56 PM)

On the board I modded back in '06, we had a guy who had so many sock puppets we (me and the other mods) were sure he managed to successfully flame himself. Yes, you can tell a sock puppet largely by the style and grammar. And there's other ways, but I'm not telling.

SeekingTrinity -> RE: Sock Puppets (6/27/2013 9:29:58 PM)

~FRing it~

I don't think Im very good at sock spotting. Arpig was before my time. The only one I know of is the whole Awareness/TAFKAA deal, but that doesn't really count because it was made clear from the start that he was the same guy.

People have punctuation and sentence structure habits they don't know they have, so it doesn't occur to them to change that. I think the analogy is the "tell" in gamblers, unconscious behaviors that can't be voluntarily changed so long as they remain unconscious.

I've had a couple of people on the other side come at me from different identities. It was surprisingly easy to identify them. One by his apostrophes, and another just by basic sentence structure. Funny as hell. I hope people don't get smarter about it!

edited to add: I have a sock, but I mostly keep it stuffed in her mouth [:)] I only need her for the rare post.

lol. Neither can I, usually.

I do know, though, that at least one person on this thread used to employ a number of sock puppets in support of that person's own posts.

TNDommeK -> RE: Sock Puppets (6/27/2013 9:43:17 PM)

When Greedy was still posting she filled me in on what a sock was. So just finding out what it was, I know I prolly wouldn't be able to spot one.

I told you to stop doing that. [8D]

jlf1961 -> RE: Sock Puppets (6/27/2013 10:00:50 PM)

I know of at least two of the tin foil hat group that do it regularly.

lol. I corrected the grammar error; it now reads 'that'.

Thank you.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Sock Puppets (6/28/2013 8:31:49 AM)

I can frequently spot one but not always.

Do I use one? No.
