DesFIP -> RE: caffeine or sugar ween (6/28/2013 7:37:49 PM)

I've read that it's easiest to switch to half sugar and half sugar free at first, same with caffeine. The withdrawal headache from caffeine is a bitch. Back when I used to drink a lot of it, I would then switch to half regular, half decaf. After a couple of days, two decafs to every one regular. At that point, there would be no withdrawal problem and I'd drink one caffeine in the morning and one around four in the afternoon.

But you should consider planning easy food to grab and go during these times. Hard boil half a dozen eggs and grab for easy protein.Same with slices of cheese and an apple.

Has anyone completely pulled themselves off either?how was the detox?

Master weened me off of coffee for a couple of years. It was horrible! Absolutely horrible! I had headaches that made me want to shoot myself, my entire body ached all the time and I was just a complete bitch until it all passed a few months.

Now though I'm back to drinking coffee since he allowed me to with having to get through long work days. He's been threatening to take it away though again. HELP! [:'(]

Mom used to have sugar with her coffee. She FINALLY is using a sweetner, just a packet with her coffee. She does drink coke off and on but I am trying to get her off of it because of the HFCS and she wants to lose weight.

Charles6682 -> RE: caffeine or sugar ween (6/28/2013 10:18:58 PM)

I admit it, I am a coffee fanatic. I don't drink alcohol anymore,so I need something!!

goodgirlmary -> RE: caffeine or sugar ween (6/29/2013 4:43:31 AM)

I dont drink either. (I know, surprising right lol ).Hopefully Ill find something to entertain myself.
my biggest concern is that now I may not have the energy for the crazy Ive scheduled in my life.

MasterCaneman -> RE: caffeine or sugar ween (6/29/2013 9:20:41 AM)

Caffeine is a poor replacement for good nutrition. I'll admit, I can hit the java hard (black coffee only-loves espresso), but I don't "need" it to get out of the house in the morning. If you're having energy-deficits, take a cold hard look at what else you're fueling up with. And don't do what one of my former co-workers did, replacing coffee with energy drinks. We had to call an ambulance for him when his heart started doing funny things one day.

goodgirlmary -> RE: caffeine or sugar ween (6/29/2013 9:35:18 AM)

Ill be honest, I really tend not to actually eat. When I do,its complete nonsense. Part of that is my schedule, part og itis that Im not ever hungry. But why wouldI be when Im loaded up with empty calories etc. So cutting pop first, then working from there.
my energy concern is that I work two full time jobs, run my volunteer stuff and right now "function" on very little sleep.chances are the days of insane scheduling are over :(

It's easier if you do wean off it and not just go cold turkey. You can do it without headaches if you take two weeks to slowly do it. Cut the caffeine consumption in half every three days.

MasterCaneman -> RE: caffeine or sugar ween (6/29/2013 1:57:08 PM)

That explains a lot. Okay, the best advice I could give you is, talk to your doctor and ask for a referral to a nutritionist. Once upon a time I burned the candle at both ends and the middle, and the results are not pretty. Don't do it. You're nearing the age when all your past sins come boomeranging back to you.

Take DesFIP's advice to wean off the caffeine, it's sound. But for sure, take some time to talk to a doctor before you hit that wall hard enough to take an enforced vacation in the hospital. And think about scaling back on your personal schedule, for your own good.

goodgirlmary -> RE: caffeine oand thete I roo coveringt vover me, r sugar ween (6/29/2013 2:46:04 PM)

Thats the irony, Im a nurse. I KNOW BETTER. I justact stupidly inregards to myown health. I hate to say no yo anyonewho wants or needs me,mysecond full time job is agency, and is supposed to be two shifts a week. But then itscover me,cover me and there I go.There is no financial reason to work two jobs,I just feel verybad when peopleneed me and Im not giving them what they need.
Fortunately, being a little under the weather has given me "reflection time". I think Im sticking with pop first, giving notice at agency. Ive asked to be part time before,Imcoded as parttime. I work more than fulltime in my primary job. ILL DO IT IN WRITING TONIGHT SO I CANTBE TALKED OUT OF IT :)

MasterCaneman -> RE: caffeine oand thete I roo coveringt vover me, r sugar ween (6/29/2013 2:59:50 PM)

And a little more is uncovered. Nurses work brutal hours-sometimes I think it's criminal the way they're made to pull 13 hour shifts. It's nice to help people, but all too often, they can play on your niceness so they can take a break. Do as you will-you're not the first nurse I've known (my GF is an RN, after all). But do for yourself first.

goodgirlmary -> RE: caffeine and sugar ween (6/29/2013 3:04:51 PM)

Well and thats true too.my eating and sleeping habits are the norm for most of the people I know. Its like ascrewball pride badge to eat out ofvending machines and pull extra shifts. I ran to the store today and grabbed a coffee first so I could multitask. The more I learn about myself in some regards, the more i see other things about myself that I hadnt noticed, including mymotives for silly things.

But yes, people in most areas of my life are taking major advantage of me,work is no exception

MasterCaneman -> RE: caffeine and sugar ween (6/29/2013 3:19:08 PM)

Wait until your first temporal fugue, unless you've had it already. I worked a crazy schedule too. Part time at four different bars, reserves, and I was an on-call driver for a cartage company. All at the same time. I lived off of Gatorade, vitamin pills, and a few other 'things' as well. My all-time record for staying awake was four and a half days. Don't do it to yourself anymore. Trust me in ten or twenty years, you will pay for it with interest.

goodgirlmary -> RE: caffeine and sugar ween (6/30/2013 3:56:41 AM)

What is a temporal fuse?

And yeah, I ferl like I pay for it now already.although, I am definetely much worse with it. Esprcially once released, I had to stay busy.

MasterCaneman -> RE: caffeine and sugar ween (6/30/2013 12:31:25 PM)

It's a term that was told to me after I "went missing" for about two weeks. I have no idea where I went, what I did, or who I was with, if anybody. My doctor at the time used that term when he was writing it up. He placed the blamely squarely on the schedule I was keeping, my intake of different substances, my horrible diet (vending machines, fast food, etc-sound familiar?).

I passed out in Heber City, UT. and woke up in Olathe, KS. I was on my bike, I had my wallet and ID, cash, and my pistol. I'd apparently kept clean, as I wasn't terribly dirty, although my clothes needed washing. The only clue as to where I'd been in the past fifteen days was a receipt for gas at a truck stop in Wyoming. That was my wake-up call.

No one except my mom was too concerned, because apparently I'd done it before, just not for that long. I lost two part-time jobs thanks to that episode, but they were part of my problem. I ended up quitting all of them, because they were part of the process that enabled me to do the things that caused the fugue.

For a somewhat clearer explanation, here's a link to Wikipedia. Do take with a grain of salt, but the external links to the DSM should be solid. Fugue State

sadly its pseudo justification. Cutting back btw seems to be ok since Im home, but since I most likely have mono and notexhaustion, Im thinking I should just go for it.im already sick and miserable, kwim?

myotherself -> RE: caffeine oand thete I roo coveringt vover me, r sugar ween (6/30/2013 1:46:02 PM)

~FR~

I recently gave up caffeine. I wasn't sleeping right, kept getting mood 'dips' during the day and a craving for coffee. Once I had my coffee my mood improved. Unfortunately in my job I can't just grab a coffee when I need one.

So I gave it up, went cold turkey. I was drinking maybe 6 to 10 mugs a day (about half pint mugs). Medium strength instant, with plenty of milk.

The first few days weren't nice. I timed it for the weekend, and I slept most of the weekend, was totally irritable and even had a few crying jags. By the monday I was feeling a bit more sorted, and managed a couple of days at work feeling very physically tired and a bit grumpy. I did forewarn my colleagues, so no-one was surprised when my fuse was a bit shorter than usual lol

It's been 8 weeks now and I feel fine. I will have the odd cup of decaff once a week or so, but I don't really miss it. Instead, I'm drinking green tea or jasmine tea, depending on my mood. And I feel a lot better for it!
